Consolidated Kansas

I am going to have to visit chicken danz too. I would love to get back into the orpingtons, just basically for my own viewing pleasure.

Not liking this snow and bitter cold. I even threw some suet out for cardinals and such. Made them happy, even tho they still looked cold and miserable!

Sis had to shovel to even get gate and coop door open! Dog keeps coming in, warming his tootsies, then going back out. :). He gets those ice balls tween his toes and they hurt.

Deerfield, long time no see, it's nice to have you stop by. Yes, I have injured myself for the third time in two years & have to have surgery today for a torn meniscus, ugh. I hope this is the last one. It's nice to hear you still have chickens, we were wondering about that & about how you have been doing. We lost some of our old BYC buddies to moves to other states, waaahh, but still see them on FB & I actually did go see Hawkeye's new house in Edmond.

As for what breeds & birds I have now, well it's quite a few, here goes: Wheaten & Lavender Ameraucanas (new stock on the lavenders), Buff Orps, Lavender Orps, Mottled Orps, Jubilee Orps, Barnevelders, Crested Cream Legbars (new stock this year also), Heritage Barred Rocks, Heritage RIRs, New Hampshire Reds, Speckled Sussex (not Tony Albritton of course), Ancona Ducks, Sebastabol Geese, & Guineas of various colors. I now have 3 boer goats & 3 Katahdin Hair sheep & am expecting lambs from the two ewes any time. Oh & I have a lonely Partridge Orp rooster waiting for girls & I have ordered chicks for when it gets warm enough to ship them here. I'm also planning to get Barthuhners in the spring, those are a new breed for me. My laying flock is a big mixture of breeds, but I'm getting it down now to mostly the ones I like the best.

I would love to get a breeding pair of midget whites and would be more than happy to buy them. I have some flagyl on hand also, just in case. I'll remember your worming routine. Do MW hens sit or do you incubate? I'm so glad you still have the MW's! I would love to see you again! Once it gets a bit warmer...

Midget whites will sit but they tend to break eggs if you have more than one hen sitting on a nest. They really need their own private nest to hatch successfully. When they decide to go broody they get very stubborn. Last summer I had about 6 hens that insisted on sitting on the same nest. It was during really hot weather. Of course they broke lots of eggs because they were walking all over each other. But the worst was that one of the hens actually either suffocated or got over heated who was sitting at the bottom of the pile. They had three other nests but all wanted to sit on the one.
Needless to say that is why I have to replace a hen or two.
They are the very best of mothers. The worst part is keeping the poults in the same pen as the mothers are. If they are free ranging they do fine but in a pen those little devils walk right through chicken wire the first couple weeks. Summer before last one of my hens hatched 8 chicken chicks. Even when these were full grown birds she still called them in and covered them with her wings to protect them at night. I had three full grown roosters in my turkey pen for some time. Initially the chicks took a day or two to learn her calls as opposed to a real chicken. But once they did, she was outstanding. She put the babies to bed by about 5:30 each evening even when it was light until nearly 10 PM.
Well I am sure you are on your way or at the hospital by now, Trish. I hope all goes smooth and fast and recovery is quick.
I've got to get out soon and feed the birds. I keep hoping it will warm up early today. It's not supposed to get above freezing today but at least that wind isn't blowing like it was. It looks like an ice rink here. Everything is frozen and then there is a brushing of snow on top of the ice. I hope I can get the hoses running later and at least give the birds some fresh water too.

Hope your feeling better soon. At least you don't have to get out in this crappy snow, hmm? Right after surgery is the worst.

I have a little silly story, last month in the hospital i didn't feel up to a shower right at the time the aide wanted to give me one. She said come on you'll feel better if your clean which is what momma used to tell me me so I went along with it reluctantly. I was really feeling miserable. Well she taped up my arm to protect the IV at the elbow and she was pretty brisk about. Usually I waited for my sis to get there to help but this gal was a force to be reckoned with if you know what I mean. Lol. Anyhow I told her I could take it from there and in getting into the shower realized she had taped my arm so vigorously I couldn't bend it! I was try to get shampoo out and couldn't put it on my head, etc, nurse came in and helped me but I started laughing and couldn't stop. Nurse was a sweetie. I told her the aide said it would make me feel better. Nurse asked " well do you". And I said " no, now I am just Miserable and wet instead of just miserable! I think the high dose of morphine made it hilarious but I still laugh thinking back on it.
