I have had a Partridge Rock hen for about 3 years now, she has been a super layer. I'm getting hatching eggs this week for the Silver Penciled Rocks because they're so rare & pretty. I hope some of them hatch, it's always a crapshoot when you have eggs shipped.

It's cloudy & cool here right now, hopefully soon it will clear up. I just took the lamb outside to spend time with his mom for a few hours.

Never even heard of that coloring... really pretty.

I got a roost and heater holder built and put some hardware cloth in an opening for ventilation in the building. Then I moved a little over 100 chicks out to the building. I had a new hatch yesterday and today and the ones that hatched last Tuesday that are still in the house. I want to see how the older ones do before I move the tiny babies out there.
I need to start listing chicks for sale. I've got so many right now. Some of the colors are really hard to tell apart. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about that.

Recommendation on leg bands
Numbered or colored ones?
Is there anywhere to purchase them besides online?
I know my local orschlens doesn't have them

Anybody tried Bluestem in Emporia or any of the TSC's?
Places i haven't thought of?

I never found them locally when I was looking for them. I ended up going with the wing bands but leg bands would be simpler.

Deerfield I'll bet they're good entertainment for you! I haven't really gotten to enjoy my chickens lately with having to deal with feeding this lamb all the time. I'm trying to get him integrated back into the flock. Today we got the gate fixed to the field after the ram broke the strap I had been using to keep it shut yesterday. I had to go to Wichita for my hair appt. anyway so I dropped by Atwoods in Derby & picked up a tube gate latch. DH got it installed this morning, yay, & boy is that going to make my life much easier. The ram was already testing it when I walked away, darned ram. I have him up for sale if anyone knows of someone who needs a Katahdin ram. I think he needs a bigger flock to watch over & more space & then he would be happier. Our situation here is just on a small scale & he isn't really happy with it. I have a new ram lamb picked out that I will be picking up as soon as he is weaned & another ewe lamb as well. At any rate I'll be glad when the lamb can be left out with the flock full time & I can use the bucket feeder so I'm freed up more to do other things that need to be done soon. My main coop needs cleaning bad, it's time.

Yup, those birds are a hoot. I imagine you are exhausted with the demands of your baby.

I thought sheep were supposed to be easy and goats were the nuisances -- I guess your ram didn't get the memo on that. So, what are you going to do with your sheep? Are they pets or for food or wool? Congrats on the new gate latch, anything to make life easier is always a good thing!

Thrilled for you! The more you move there the more energy I bet you find to work on it and prep more space for additional birds.

I've checked at Bluestem, TSC and orshlens and none of them had leg bands. I order mine from Smith Poultry supply and Randall Burkey's. I prefer numbered and colored metal. But of course metal are ones that you would put on when the bird is full grown. If you really want to keep track I recommend numbered and colored. I use colors for the year and numbers for the bird....or that is the plan if I ever get them all banded.
I wouldn't worry about banding them until they at least 4 months old though.
Well I found a rogue chick that apparently escaped when I was moving chicks to the building while ago. He was hiding in my bathroom. I hadn't heard him make any sounds at all.
So I went out to check on the chicks in the building. I'm glad I didn't move the babies out there. it was pretty darned chilly . I did have one really small chick that I lost but I guess that wasn't too awful for a first night trial. I think I am going to need more shavings. I also think I will build some kind of raised platform for feed and water. It would surely keep the water cleaner that way. I may have to rig up a thermostat some way to run a remote heater until the brooding and hatching room is all done.
I am pretty disturbed. I had a customer ask in November to buy a Mandarin drake from me. In the meantime I had a couple other people asking to buy the spare drake but I turned them down saying it was sold. Well I've been getting cancelled appointments since then. It is too cold, the weather is bad, etc etc. I told them I preferred they got him before breeding season so the birds could still pair without disturbing a pair. But no, they kept putting me off. They were supposed to come last Wednesday but said it might rain. Then they were supposed to come today to get him. Last night they said they weren't going to buy him because I haven't vaccinated the Mandarins.
What??? They are kept in their own aviary and not exposed to other birds. I've never had a sick Mandarin and vaccinations are made for domestic ducks, not wild ducks for the most part. These people were dumb any way, simply because they wanted the adult so he would be in full color for the fair. I have no idea when their fair is but if they knew anything about Mandarins they would also know that they molt after laying season so in summer they probably wouldn't be in color. But I kept my mouth shut because I don't want to sound like a know it all.
I think I am done holding birds. I am so tired of getting screwed over while people wait months and then back out. I don't mind keeping birds for people I know, but I think in the future I am going to require a non-refundable deposit on special birds. And maybe require a feed payment for time over a week or two. I've lost so much money holding birds for no shows.
I hate to do that. I keep putting it off, but these people waste hours of communicating back and forth and then drop out at the last minute. I need to start doing this like a business instead of a hobby I pay a ridiculous amount to do. I'm irritated as much with myself as the other people.

Yeah this baby takes a lot of energy & now he's getting bigger & has more energy as well. Last night after I brought him back in from outside we were sitting in the livingroom watching TV & I was trying to hold him off on a bottle till later so he could make it through the night. He decided it would be a good idea to jump up on the couch several times & then on my recliner, ugh this animal needs to stay outside but I'm working on integrating him back in. None of the sheep really want anything to do with him so it's making it hard.

Danz I'm glad you're making some progress at least on your brooder area, yay!
