Consolidated Kansas

off by predators one by one. We would get 100 chicks every year. But we also only paid 3 cents each for them. Oh how things have changed.

Welcome venymae. Where are you in east central Kansas? Most of us are considered to be East Central but that covers a large area. You might be neighbors to one of us.
I for sure don't need hatching eggs but many people are always looking for some.
It's supposed to be a beautiful day but it's kind of cloudy right now. I hope I can get a lot done today. Good weather always makes me feel better.
We are just outside Manhattan KS

I lived in Council Grove for over 20 years until I bought this place. I used to spend a lot of time in Manhattan. I love that town. Best Walmart any where!! My son and his wife just left Manhattan in August. They had been there for several years. While they went to college, and then afterwards when they both worked at Ft Riley.

I've been out putting wood on the inside of a chick brooding area in my new building. I need to find some hardware cloth around here to put over an area for a vent and it will be ready to go. I might actually get chicks out of the house this week. Of course I wore myself out and am back in here to take a break. I doubt I'll get a lot more done today.

Anderson Lowe, If you want to trade me the cornish crosses for a couple Buff Sussex (they are very rare birds, extremely mellow, healthy and people friendly), I would be happy to take a drive with some of my kids to meet you between here and there for the trade, straight across, after my chicks hatch on the 23rd. I have teen drivers looking to get their hours complete by May. Then you will have Buff Sussex and Buff Cochin bantams. Two extremes in size but I've had bantams with these birds and they do just fine. I had a Buff Cochin bantam and it was the sweetest little bird.

Here is what the bird looks like when grown.

I was so busy today I didn't think about what day it is. I heard noises when I came back in and have a tray of chicks hatching. And guess who is out of room to put them anywhere. I finally got the stapler located since DH got home and tomorrow I can finish up the brooder area and move some chicks. I hope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so tired I can barely move. I can't complain though cause it was a beautiful day. I just need to get myself on daylight savings time so I don't waste so much time in the mornings.

Hello Kansas Peeps!

We are in East-Central Kansas. Our flock is 21 Rhode Island Reds (3 roos 18 hens) with 2 production red hens thrown in :) None of them are people aggressive and the Production Reds are just sweeties. Our winter lay this year was great, averaging 18 eggs a day, even on the coldest days! If anyone is looking for fertile eggs for hatching this spring we have some! Just send me a pm.
Welcome! I have Heritage RIRs myself & they're darned good layers. I'm going to have to re-home one of the roosters though, they're beating each other to a pulp, stupid roosters. I sure have had it with roosters lately.

Deerfield those Buff Sussex sure are pretty. Are they as good layers as the Speckled variety?

I'm so exhausted, I just never thought it would take so darned much energy to bottle feed a lamb, geez.

Oh good! So this will work out just fine. I will PM you later today. That's the thing about this group. There isn't much of a problem we can't solve since we're so diverse. Being a new chicken person is not a problem when you have a support group like this. They've helped me a million times. Glad to pay it forward.

Deerfield I'll bet they're good entertainment for you! I haven't really gotten to enjoy my chickens lately with having to deal with feeding this lamb all the time. I'm trying to get him integrated back into the flock. Today we got the gate fixed to the field after the ram broke the strap I had been using to keep it shut yesterday. I had to go to Wichita for my hair appt. anyway so I dropped by Atwoods in Derby & picked up a tube gate latch. DH got it installed this morning, yay, & boy is that going to make my life much easier. The ram was already testing it when I walked away, darned ram. I have him up for sale if anyone knows of someone who needs a Katahdin ram. I think he needs a bigger flock to watch over & more space & then he would be happier. Our situation here is just on a small scale & he isn't really happy with it. I have a new ram lamb picked out that I will be picking up as soon as he is weaned & another ewe lamb as well. At any rate I'll be glad when the lamb can be left out with the flock full time & I can use the bucket feeder so I'm freed up more to do other things that need to be done soon. My main coop needs cleaning bad, it's time.

Everybody enjoy the day, it's beautiful here!
