Danz, Trish, tried the popsicles but she doesn't want those. I was using some essential oils that really helped but she had a reaction to those. Poor kid still has a low fever. We called the doctor's office and they called out some prescription popsicles that have a numbing medication in them but it still hasn't been filled. They said it would take at least a day. The doctor's office just said the Tylenol would be fine, there isn't any other medication they give kids, use hot and cold packs, did that. She's having lots of pain in her ears from the swelling. I wish they had continued having these dumb things taken out when kids are little. This is brutal.

Trish, I've seen that river out of it's banks at the fairgrounds a number of times. It's quite impressive. My brother's place backs to the Arkansas but I haven't heard anything from them in the way of trouble. It's come out of its banks before and gotten really close to their house. I am very thankful for your hill right now. I can't imagine dealing with water in the basement, like Danz. That has to be a nightmare to clean up.

Danz, I think it's extremely difficult when you have to put up with so much pain. Don't be too hard on yourself.

Well, the sun is peeking out and the wind is blowing like crazy! Maybe it will dry things up a bit before the next onslaught of rain. I haven't even stirred from the couch today other than to go take a nap. Not my ideal world going on but what can you do. I've got bronchitis now but it's a mild case and I hope this is as bad as it gets. I sure hope DD starts to feel better soon. I know it's a 2 week process but it's really hard to not be able to do much for her.

Trying to decide IF I am brave enough to scoop up all the chicks and let them play in the pen I made for a while! They say it might storm soon again as well so I need to be able to get them back in quickly....laundry basket?

Im glad to hear from y'all again! Thank you for the felicitations. I am no longer in the Air Force as I was diagnosed with fibrimyalgia and apparently it makes me undesireable to the mission. So, I have the summer with my boys to figure out civilian life and look for the perfect nursing job.

Deerfield, I have been following quite a few of the other threads in the meat bird forums. I just saw your name pop up in the caponizing thread. Do you process meat birds? I am really interested in learning how to process birds to see if it is something I can do in the future.

This rain is really something else! We havent been able to mow in quite a while, our lawn mower bit the dust and now its just too wet. I am supposed to be hosting a certain almost 7year olds birthday party this weekend in back yard... At least he wanted it jungle theme?!?

I really appreciate everyone's insight, experience, and input about showing chickens. I am a willing learner, and although I do not always have to respond to all of the wonderful things I learn from you seasoned chicken keepers on this thread, I want you to know I read through and take mental notes! It is very encouraging and helpful to know y'all are here.

I need to help my kids choose which of our birds they are going to enter in the fair by the end of the week. Should I just let them enter whichever bird they want this first year, putting it in the "other" category if it doesn't meet competitive standards? Also, we only have pullets. Our oldest are layers and 7 months old. We have 8 of those. Our next oldest are about 8 weeks old, and our littlest are 5 weeks. I have never seen little pullets shown in fairs before, but I've never really paid attention to the chicken showing too much, except to browse through looking at the 4-H and open class chickens at county and state fairs. My 4-H experience was involved, but did not include animals (except my dog), since we lived in town.

Speaking of our chickens, our little frizzle bantam, Tina Turner, has turned out to be quite the reliable egg-layer. She has been laying a tiny little Tina egg every day for the past two weeks!

Yeah, we've processed some birds. I am working this week on caponizing. It's was a very difficult thing to do the first time and I can't say I've ever enjoyed it, but I do like knowing where our meat has come from. What area are you from, we're close to Derby.

Greetings everyone from SE Kansas! I have been on here before under the name of silkiemama but I lost the email address and password the account was attached to and I haven't had much to do with my chickens since I have been in school for the last five years. I have a question for anyone who raises silkies....

...I just bought a nice, nice little roo with a walnut comb...however...he has the reddest comb ever... The female has black face and lobes but this roo has a red comb and it is a walnut shaped one, just red.... so what should I do with him...Do not say kill as that is not an option...I saw the bird online, the guy sent me a picture and I told him I wanted them. He brought them and my heart sunk...Any suggestions? How likely will it be thrown in his chicks?

@sharol , one of my month-old chicks from My Pet Chicken is a Golden Laced Wyandotte. It will be interesting to see how she turns out as far as coloring goes. I'm guessing since she's from the same place your Vic was from, she'll probably look similar. I'm not too worried about show quality as of now, because we're showing for 4-H and it is our first year. If the kids get serious later, we'll learn more about where we want to go for "show stock," but the chicken-raising education and eggs are just as much part of our chicken experience as the show part for now.

We haven't floated away, yet, but that's just because the canoe is hung up in the shed and not in our yard lake. We've had tons more rain in the Wichita area today. One good thing is that our sandbags have kept the water from entering the coop from under the door and filling it like a bathtub this time!

I about wet myself when I was out in the coop earlier and was collecting eggs and checking to make sure the water was staying out. I blindly reach my hand in, like I always do, and retrieved two eggs. I reached my hand back in to sweep the nest bucket to make sure I didn't miss any, when something alive bumped my hand. I immediately pulled my hand out, surprised, and started talking to our little Tina, thinking she was in the back of the box trying to lay an egg and had pecked me. Then I realized all 14 chickens were on the roost and accounted for.

I timidly bent down and shined my cell phone into the box, only to find a little toad that was trying to stay dry, I guess. I'm not scared of toads, but I will not be gathering eggs without a flashlight from now on. We have a good-sized resident garter snake, and I thought for a second that he was my nest bucket resident who didn't belong!



Finally, just before the sun went down, we got a little peek of sun. Just enough sun was peeking through, that it turned the sky beautiful shades of pink and purple and left us with a pretty rainbow scene. I'm taking God at his word--that rainbow promise--that this world won't be destroyed by flood again! I'm also thankful, despite the fact that it is inconvenient and kind of messy, that our state is coming out of is drought. Especially western Kansas, where my family and farmer friends there there need it most!




Long handled slotted spoons that you use for spaghetti work wonderful for gathering eggs in nests that might have snakes...learned that the hard way and if you mount them on the end of a foot long dowel rod, even better!!!
