Consolidated Kansas

Is there any hope for this little one? I have my doubts. It is breathing, and before it hatched (without help) it was cheeping. Poor baby. Anything I can do for her/him?

I am deleting the picture because it is so upsetting. I culled the baby and took a good look at it. The intestines were formed outside the body, so there was never any hope for it. It was cheeping every time it moved, and I didn't want it to suffer unnecessarily. Dang I get attached to these little ones.

If that is his guts, no it won't live. I have had them eviscerate themselves before during hatching. They get an infection and die regardless of what you do. Very sad situation. So sorry. Still that is a pretty good average for what those eggs went through and no more than you had considering the deadly Araucana gene to deal with on top of it. I suspect those other two eggs lost the battle with the gene if they were Araucana.
I've produced some just gorgeous little double tufted chicks from this same breeding group myself. The splash boy and the black hens are producing a fair share of blues. I need to move a couple more girls in with him soon and eliminate my other pen. I may cull the other rooster and let one blue hen just free range as a layer. She tends to be overly aggressive and a bully to the other Araucanas.

Looks like I need to give my largest chicken a bath.......her bottom is dirty and there are a small amount of lice eggs on the shaft of the feathers back there....not alot, such as some photos I have seen, thank goodness!

I better get to it before I "chicken" out.....

My baby chicks are now 6 weeks old, I am waiting on my aunt/uncle to come pick them up, hopefully soon! It is getting crowded in the run!

@sharol - dealing with that little chick would be hard. I've gotten to where I can butcher full grown ones, but I don't know how I'd do on a baby.

My broody hen has hatched five of the 10 or 11 eggs under her. My hatch percentage has never been very good, but neither are my egg sources. We ended up with two welsummers and 3 BCM's. The welsummers, I'm told, are easier to sex. If that's true, I have one boy and one girl. They "eye makeup" and markings are much clearer/cleaner on one. I need to do some research on the BCM's.

I have an 100% English Lavender Orp roo that needs to find a new home. He's 8-10 weeks old or so, and pretty laid back. He doesn't like us very well, but tolerates when we grab him. His feathers aren't the prettiest, not sure why they look a bit worn. He's got a massive chest and is getting that cynical "What's your deal?" roo look right now.

I got him from Danz, and they are direct, FancyChicks stock. I would have posted pictures, but my back yard is a mess. In fact, I'm thinking of donating it to the Everglades as it would fit in well down there. If anyone is interested, PM me and I can text some pics. I don't know that I want anything for him, maybe trade for a pullet at POL or a young hen or two? I'd like for him to avoid the stock pot so if he goes on CL it will probably be $20 as that should keep him out of the freezer. I'm just outside of Kansas City, north of the Legends.

I want ducks so bad! The hubs draws the line at adding a new species to our menagerie. One day, when I have my farm and acreage... No one can stop me!
If you ever want any ducklings send me a PM. I'm not too far away & I raise Anconas

Stopped in to cool down. What a nice change...even if it is humid. I just moved some more chicks outside and hoped to move some more but I'm running out of day and energy. I still have to feed all the birds so I have a lot more work to do out there.
I'm very very happy and pleased with myself right now. I finally went over and hooked up the wires into the breaker box at my friend's. I have a pigtail crippled into the box with a plug in, so we could test it until the outside power box is set. That is professional work that I would NEVER tackle. Any way I ran an extension cord to my pigtail and every thing works perfectly. All the lights and switches work and all the outlets work. I forgot to bring the cover for the breaker box but I'll remember that the next time I go over. My wedding present is complete and I am one happy camper. One less thing to worry about for now.
Better be headed back out there and get these birds cared for.

I just don't handle the humidity well at all, I just sweat buckets when I go out, ugh. I guess I wouldn't make it in the south, but even here any more we have much more humidity than we used to. It has gotten more & more like the climate south of us. Of course where I live we're almost to OK anyway & they're a half a growing zone different. I know we have gotten bugs here the last few years that we never had before that came up from south of us.

Congrats on the wiring, good for you!

I'm so sorry about your little chick, it's hard to see them suffer like that. It's hard to cull them but if you know they can't make it anyway it's the more humane thing to do.

I put my 3 little goslings outside in the pen with the bigger goslings yesterday, I hope they do OK in there. They seemed very happy about having so much more room. I'm going to let the bigger ones out in the yard today to go eat bugs & grass.

Zig those lavender orps tend to have a slow feathering gene in about 75% of them. They look butt ugly until they finally feather in then the feathering is actually superior. I have several that only have wing feathers and head feathers instead of feathering all over. It's just something in their genetic makeup. The chocolates tend to be that way some as well. Yet the jubilees and the whites seem to feather in really well.
I've had a busy day so far and actually had no time to do my chores. I hatched about 30 ducklings and sold three this morning as well as a few dozen eggs. but all these things take time. The duck buyer brought his Dad who is an old work mate of mine I hadn't seen in at least 15 years. It was so great to see him.
Ashncarson, to get rid of lice you are going to have to spray in the cracks of the coop and do so again in about 7 days, as well as treat your chickens. Permethrin is the best treatment to get rid of them. Of course the damp weather just gives them more breeding grounds.
It's a big mudhole outside today. Are we ever going to get to dry out?

Zig he's still awfully young but filling out nicely. The only problem I see with him is he looks like he has a wonky comb. That may just be a growing thing. His dad has a perfect comb so I wouldn't expect a bad comb unless one of the hens carried a bad comb.
For anyone who might be interested this is 100% English from Fancy Chicks. His Dad weighs in the neighborhood of close to 15 pounds and has perfect shape.
I pressure washed an old homemade cage and moved it into the brooder in the building. I put a bunch of turkey poults and guinea keets in it. I hope they do okay. I let a bunch of the really young turkeys just go in with the chicken chicks in there. They aren't the smartest birds so I could loose a few of them if they can't find the
waterers.
Some day I'll get all the chicks out of the house for a change.

Good - I was wondering how he looked compared to your others. With a chest like that he looks like he's going to be huge.

It's a shame you can't keep him quiet until he is full grown so people can really appreciate him. I lost 4 of the lavenders in the rain storm night before last. They were just getting that chunky look to them.
