Consolidated Kansas

Thank you for the suggestion I would hate to waste money planting something that won't thrive under the tree. I didn't think that one through. There's been so much going on lately I haven't thought a lot of things through. My babysitter didn't show up again today so after the boys get their naps we will attempt to get work done at the other house. That's taking forever to get done. Unfortunately we can't finish the run and coop until we get that house done. Hopefully soon though. Hope everyone has a great and cool day!

Hey that's what we're here for. People with like minds sharing thoughts, idea, knowledge and news. Vinca will bloom longer with more water and it also blooms again in fall normally. I love it. I have the plain vinca which blooms the best and the varigated vinca which adds color interest when they aren't blooming.
I spent a very long hard day but got another pen taken down. Got some of the panels and the coop drug across the yard and set up and netted. Then I spent the rest of the day catching and sorting chickens. I still have tons too many. And the roosters are every where. I've been trying to separate them out. I wish the weather would be more like today was for awhile.
I've got appointments to keep me busy the next two days so I'm glad I got so much done today.

Looking for feedback: I just verified that the mystery rooster is one of the Easter eggers. Which rooster would you keep..... The buff brahma or the Easter egger? They both have excellent demeanors. The buff is last springs and the ee is this springs.

If the buff is nice stick with the buff. If you were to get rid of the buff the easter egger might just become a jerk.
But really other than that personal choice and even eenie meanie miney mo have been my methods. :D

Well, The Mystery of the Missing Chick has been solved, unfortunately. My daughter called me today from home while I was out with my son for an appointment and feed store errand. She said she found the missing chick, dead and buried in the chicken coop. She said she saw some feathers sticking out of the pine shavings, and when she tried to pick one up to look at it closer, thinking it looked like a feather from the missing chick, she picked up the whole half-decomposed chick.

We find this INCREDIBLY odd, considering we had turned the coop upside down looking for that chick, including raking through the pine shavings. I don't know why it died or why it was then buried that far under the pine shavings, all between the time I shut the coop door at 10 p.m. and when we opened it back up around 8 the next morning. So strange. I am at least comforted that owls or hawks were probably not involved like I originally suspected. I am sad, though, 'cause I never like losing animals to anything, and that chick was beautiful and special, like Danz said.

Tina is in the penalty box. She didn't protest too much when I pulled her out of her egg-sitting nest bucket and put her in the broody breaker cage. She immediately ate the food and drank the water we had put in there for her, which is a good sign. The other chickens were extremely curious about the cage and why Tina was in it. Hopefully the activity surrounding the cage from the other chickens, as well as being out of her nice, warm laying box, will convince her to stop the broodiness!

I would definitely go with the buff brahma. An Easter egger is technically a mixed breed bird and since it's not a pullet it won't be laying eggs for you for sure.

You never know what kind of attitude it will have as a full grown rooster. Brahmas are awesome docile birds and I've never seen one that is aggressive at all.
@Grain Gypsy , I'm sorry about the bird. I know you knew it was gone but it's always harder to see than feel.

Kansas Cluckers I have never had Brahmas but I'll take Danz's word for it that they're nice birds. I do know that the Easter Egger roo could get aggressive. I raise true Ameraucanas & those roosters never play nice with other roosters, I have never had any luck with having them out in my general laying flock where I have other roosters. They want to be top man & that's that & they'll fight till the death to prove it. I have had to re-home any I retire from breeding for that reason.

Grain Gypsy I'm sorry about your chick, it's always hard losing a bird no matter how many you have.

Speaking of losing birds, the one hen who got overheated the other day finally died from it night before last. I was sad to see her go, she was a good hen. She just couldn't recover from the damage from the heat. We have several days in a row coming up of that heat. I'm sure not looking forward to it.

On another note, I got my garden trug I wanted for next year's salad garden & will be excited to get it put together & see how it looks all set up. I think it will be great to put mixed lettuces in & radishes & things like that & I won't have to bend over to work in it.

Here are a few pics of each rooster just for fun

Well here I go again bursting bubbles. That isn't a buff brahma. Colors are all wrong. It's a gold laced roo and it isn't brahma. Brahmas have a pea comb and the buff brahma roosters look like this:
That looks more like a gold laced cochin to me.
I have another medical appointment today. Found out yesterday I do have to have another cervical spinal fusion. I told the doc I wanted to put it off until I couldn't stand it. I am hoping I can make it early fall in hopes of having more work done around here to get ready for winter. Of course now we are back to rain again and high heat so heaven knows how much I can get done.
I'm selling a bunch of cockerels right now to avoid them becoming meat. I still have lots of girls to sell but I don't worry about selling them. And incidentally I have a few girls spoken for with cockerels being purchased. It seems like it is taking me forever to get these birds sold.
Trish you could grow a fall crop of greens in that trug. I know you have things planned for some of your time but you could still do it. Lettuce, radish, brocolli etc maybe?
I had thought I might get a fall garden in but there just isn't time to do it with all the other projects I have to get done in the next couple months. Maybe next year will be better. So far the tomatoes in the flower bed are still alive although we are a long ways from having tomatoes.

Sorry to here of your pending surgery, never fun.

My tomatoes are late as well this year. I hope to put in some Spinach (bugs ate my Spring crop) and Brocc for fall, we'll see if I get that done LOL
I sent you a PM about some birds.....don't tell my DH
