Consolidated Kansas

Ladies I love both houses hope to live in something like that in another 10 years.

Need everyone's input regarding my brooder we got the email at 1 today that our chicks are on their way and I have heard that you should use paper towels for the first couple days so The chicks don't eat the bedding in place of the food? What have you found to be true? Here is my brooder though I don't have my littke roosts in here yet

I'm from Kansas and SO NERVOUS. Our city votes tomorrow night on whether we'll be allowed backyard chickens. I claim mine are pets, because they are to me, and I got them at 'My Pet Chicken'! Alas....it's all based on one person tomorrow...WISH ME LUCK! I'm just learning this site....and I finally posted about my chicken house, so I don't know if it is is showing up correctly--it is called 'Twin Bed Chicken Coop--Cheap, Cheep!'

I think paper towels are a good start the first day or so but be sure to fill the feeder as well. I see the plastic pipe. I am guessing that is the waterer? If you use that you might put some marbles or something in the bottom of that little dish so a chick doesn't accidentally get in there and get stuck.

Where did you post about your chicken coop? I'd love to look. Welcome to our forum. Tell us more about yourself. Good luck with the city approving your birds.

It's been a cold and drizzly day out there. I sure could have enjoyed my chores a lot more if it were sunny and warm

I read not to use newspaper because it is too slippery--I actually used an old scrap of fabric, or a dishtowel--I can't remember. Then some pine shavings. I didn't have any trouble with them trying to eat it. I also had a huge cardboard box and put holes in each side then ran a small piece of wood across it out the holes. This was very low--the chicks 'roosted' on it within a few days, and then I put some wood pieces/branches at a higher level as they got older. I put my chicken coop on the page that says Coops, I think!

Danz sharp eyes correct the pvc pipe is a nippled drinking the small contaier under the middle one is because we noticed it was dripping just a bit and wanted to see how much was actually dripping out before deciding what we,need to do it isn't going to stay in there. Yep got my big red feeder filled so just need to remove the litter lay down paper towels and add the roost. Thank you

I have never seen anyone use the drip waterers with new chicks. I'm not saying it won't work cause I am not sure. I would however show each chick where they are and toggle it for them so they have an idea. If you don't see them using them on their own then I would be prepared to put a quart sized waterer with a base in there for them. I hope someone else chimes in who have used these for chicks before. I have used them on older birds. I wasn't real happy with them though cause they did tend to leak if they were perfectly level. I started putting them in the bottom of plastic coffee cans and hanging them from the tops of cages for birds I had separated in a cage for one reason or the other. Works great for that.

Nods we have a back up in case they don't but yep from what I read you tap their beak against it when you first go to put, them in the brooder and then after they have gotten a drink you set them down next to them and tap it again

I have never used a drip waterer for chicks either, let us know how that works. I have been using a gallon waterer in mine for as long as I've been raising chicks. I sure wouldn't want water dripping all over the shavings if it leaked since my brooders are wood. I have always used shavings right from the first day with my chicks & never have had any problems with them eating them. As long as they have chick starter in there they always go for that. I do have some non-slip textured shelf material in my hatching trays so the chicks have something to grip in there. They're really easy to clean off after the hatch is done.

Trashcraft good luck with the chicken decision, hopefully they will rule that you can keep your chickens. I'm so glad I don't live inside a town so I can have as many as I want. I think people should be able to have a few chickens in towns though, they're no more trouble than dogs & quieter in my opinion.

It rained a couple of times yesterday, I don't know how much rain we got. I hope it doesn't rain today because we have to go pick up a couple of livestock panels to make a transport cage for the back of our truck to take our lamb in to get him processed Thursday. This will be our first one we've taken. My son has one here that he's going to have processed but he's a bit behind on growth & size so hopefully after this one leaves the other one can jump in & eat his share. I sure didn't want either of them to be here all winter to feed.

Trish,
Good luck on your sheep and yep in my wooden brooder box I put down vinyl fully textured tiles so the water just sit on the tiles or gets asorbored by the bedding and so far it looks to be working great looks like that drip was just cause I needed to poke the nipple then it sealed itself. Latest news from the post office is that my chicks will arrive no later then Wed. Am really hoping they arrive today.
