Thank you for the concern. We spent the afternoon yesterday in the ER, and I have a follow-up appointment scheduled. I'm definitely not 100% today, but it's not as bad as it could've been with an accident like that.

So sorry. That's terrible. And you haven't had that van that long. I hope the other guy's insurance pays well. Do your homework to make sure that they don't try to short you on a payoff.
Nope, we've had the van just barely more than a year, and we haven't put that many miles on it. I will be pretty upset if they don't give us enough to get an equally nice van. We paid a bit more than blue book value for that van, but it was worth it because it was in such good shape, especially for having that many miles on it.
I hope the insurance pays without a lot of problems.
I did some surgery on a hen today. It's a buff orp hen I've had separated in a cage by herself for months. She had a very swollen area on one side under her eye. I have given her round after round of antibiotics to try to clear it up. I have even given her shots directly in the swollen area and nothing would clear it. She isn't sick and doesn't have a cold or anything. I assumed over time that she got something embedded in her eye and it caused a fistula with an abscess.
So today I finally brought her in and cut open the area under her eye and worked out all the infection bit by bit. It was unbelievable how much stuff was in there. It smelled bad and looked worse. I used betadine to sterilize the area before I cut it and then flushed the area out with peroxide and water after I got the infection compressed out of it. Then I squirted some sulfa drug directly into the incision in hopes it would help clear out any remaining infection.
Ultimately I should flush it out and keep it open for several days but I hate to put her through that.
She had endured a lot by then and I know it was painful. If she is still feeling well tomorrow I may start putting a little Oregano oil in the incision. It burns so I just didn't feel right about doing it today. I checked on her while ago and she is eating and drinking just like normal.
I just hope this works. She has been laying eggs all this time where my other buff orps have been loafing. I'd love to get her back to her breeding group again.

She is doing great actually. I really need to treat her some more and try to flush out her sinuses again. I just hate to get her wet when It is so cold out. I really don't have a problem doing a little surgery here or there.

She's beautiful!!I thought I'd share a couple of pictures of my most unusual hen(pullet). She is a Mottled English Orpington from one of Danz's eggs. We are calling her Oreo for obvious reasons.
She is about 17 weeks old, so not laying yet. But we think she is a beauty.
She is in the front with the Jubilees, Lavendars, Blacks, and one White EO behind her. Talk about yard art!!
Sometimes egg eating is indicative of them needing more calcium or other nutrients. And then some birds just develop a bad habit. I have trimmed a few beaks around here just to the point they bleed. You can look at the beak to see where the thicker live tissue is. Sometimes it cures it and sometimes it doesn't.
If your hen isn't out free ranging she is probably needing some digestive calcium. If you have gravel on your driveway it's probably lime stone. That is the best calcium you can give a bird. Go out and pick up the finer pieces and the dust and offer it to her. Also if you don't mind spending a little money, things like broccoli and other greens contain a lot of good things chickens need to balance their diets. And of course you can always give them vitamins but they aren't as good as food derived nutrients.

Something's up with our Mille Fleur D'Uccle hen, Millie. My father-in-law noticed her having issues walking while he was caring for our chickens the week after Christmas (we were in Colorado skiing). He assured that she was still getting her food and water (she would kind of hobble/scoot to it), and he put one feeder and waterer on the floor of the coop so that she had access. She was not able to get up on the elevated feeder or waterer for access. Upon returning home, the kids went out to gather eggs, feed, and water and watched Millie for a while, with her interaction with the others. They confirmed she was having issues getting around and that Coconut, our sexlink rooster, was "picking on" her. Then my 13-year-old spoke up and said, "It didn't look like he was picking on her, it looked like he was trying to mount her." I went out and watched and, alas, it appeared that Coconut was mistaking Millie's handicap as a submissive squat and trying to mate the poor girl. We brought her in the house, gave her a bath, and have been keeping her in a box. She still eats and drinks and seems to have her wits completely about her. She just can't get around normally. When she does try to move, it is more of a roll, hop-scoot sort of thing. She doesn't have much room to move around in the box, but when we put her on a towel on the floor is when she will occasionally try to move about. Her only other symptom is open-mouthed breathing.
I read up on Merek's, and I wondered about that, however none of my other chickens are showing any symptoms. All of my big hens and roos were vaccinated as chicks for Merek's, but not my bantams, which include a cochin, Millie, and two silkies. None of the other non-vaccinated bantams are showing any of the same symptoms.
I did give Millie some oral vitamins tonight to see if that helps. She's been inside in the box for about 10 days now, and the only things I've tried are the vitamins that I started tonight and I did check for a broken bone. I don't think there's a break, but I'm not really sure what to look for, either. I even thought that Coconut (who is easily 3x Millie's size) could have easily hurt her trying to mate her, but I'm not sure.
