Those eggs look great in the picture anyway. I don't think there's too much you could improve upon. Maybe if you brought in a cream legbar cockerel he could do you some good and he would be a lot cheaper. You'd still have the barring in the chicks but maybe a little red coloring to them here and there.
I'm just not gaining ground today. I was awake a lot of the night because I ate food I knew would upset my stomach and it did. It feels cold out there and I'm just not enthused about doing much of anything. This always happens when my schedule is tight and full. I think I subconsciously shut down cause I don't want to face all that demands my attention.

No red coloring, Danz. Just poor picture-taking.

@Ralph Moyer I meant the legbars would put some red color in there. They are trying to get them the cream color but all the old stock has red feathers mixed in.

@Ralph Moyer I am a member of the Crested Cream Legbar club so I've been raising them for awhile now. The new standards they're working towards are pretty much the same as the UK standards. I believe they will get them approved soon with the APA. I really liked more color on the roosters myself but since I'm working towards the standard I had to breed it out. The newest line, the Rees line from the UK are pricey. My birds are GFF line C & Rees line & if I could afford it I would only have Rees, maybe eventually. I have one hen who I hope to get some chicks from to keep this year, she is my best one from the Rees line. If the pic is accurate on your eggs I don't know what you would do to improve them, those look like a nice blue. I don't know if you can find cheap Cream Legbars, even the bad colored ones are still high. My newly hatched chicks go for $35 a pair or $25 a pullet. I'm not sure you would want to pay that much for project birds, but I guess that's up to you. I did see a guy on the FB swaps selling a trio for a good price recently, but I don't know if they sold or not. The coloring wasn't good on them but they were at point of lay.

This year, my hubby finally agreed to allow me to try some chickens (currently own 4 ducks and 3 geese). I only wanted like 10 chickens, but discovered that it was cheaper to order Cackle Hatchery's surprise box than it was to order 10 of a specific breed, so I am now preparing for 40-60 chickens my first year of owning chicks (and with a baby due this summer to boot). I requested a ship date of early March, so I was told ship date of March 7th with an arrival date of March 9th or 10th. My DH and I have been frantically working on the new chicken coop trying to get it done before the chicks arrive. We have run into a seemingly endless list of problems, but are making slow progress. Here's a picture of the in-progress coop! I'm pretty excited to get my new chickens and am looking forward to help from ya'll in figuring out what's what!

It's looking good so far. You are planning to cover the panels with smaller wire right? I just use an extra large tarp on top of the hoop coop & cable tie it down. The heavy duty ones last 2-3 years depending on how much cover you have overhead & wind. Wow, you're really jumping in with both feet with all of those chicks coming!

It might be kinda hard to see, but we're covering it with tin. That's one of the reasons this coop has taken so long. Our tin is recycled and the 12' pieces turned out to be varying lengths. 12', 12'1", etc. The first piece happened to be the perfect length. Most of the rest have had to be cut, which really slowed us down.

I do plan on building a hoop coop run separate from this and then attaching the two of them. We'll have chicken wire over the run. I hope I have enough 2x4 wire to reinforce the lower portion with as well.

Wow Lizzy I can see you got a lot done yesterday. It's looking really awesome.

Oh yeah I couldn't see the tin till you said that. Will you have a way to get air circulation through there then? That will be nice when it's done.

I'm planning on adding either a storm window to each end OR adding some sort of vent to each end.... just haven't gotten there yet. Also, the tin is recycled so has some nail holes in it, and it fits tightly against hte plywood but not 100% of the time, so I'm gonna leave some of the smaller holes in it for ventilation.

Counting down the days 'till my chicks arrive - 16 to go!
