Consolidated Kansas

Chicks are looking a lot better. Haven't had anymore pass, and this is their 3rd day on Corid and 2nd on Tylan 50. How much longer do I continue the Tylan 50?

Also, I've seen on different threads and pinterest different things on sprouting grains. Does anybody do it? Or is it worth the time? I have the wheat seed to do it that my neighbor gave me, just am failing miserably on trying to do it. Any input would be great!

I'm so glad your birds are doing better. I recommend a 5 day treatment for both Tylan and Corid.
I think @TakenBackBre might have some knowledge on doing that. Or you can look up
Been out working. I got an area dug out and some concrete blocks set under a door to a pen so it isn't sitting in the dirt and can be opened now. I was going to move some young pullets into one of the hen houses there but still don't have it done.
I dug up my blueberries I planted a while back and then filled the hole with peat moss and replanted them. I should have done that the first time but I just wanted to get them in the ground. That was a lot of shoveling and watering. I hope they do okay since they had started putting leaves on.
I spent most of the day gathering things to do taxes. I've still got tons to do before I file them. I hate that stuff.

I have a bottle of unused tylan 50 lol. I bought it to treat my turkey hen but I culled her instead. I don't use antibiotics on chicks really. I like to use dengard if I do. I use a lot of Corid on the other hand lol. So I can help with those questions.

I've been gardening every day but I'm very far behind. I just planted peas this last weekend. I planted most of my carrots lettuce and radishes the weekend after st. Patrick's day. It was way to cold for them then I think. I've been watering weed seeds everyday I guess! The chickens have uprooted several beds of onions. When they found them unetible they dust bathed in the raised beds. So I've had to replant quite a few onions. I've been hatching ALOT of chicks but not the ones I really want. My hens had been getting out of the chocolate pen, through a pallet that needed to be replaced, and mating with my black Orpington cock that lives in the yard. So I built a new run for the chocolates and penned all of the yard roosters so they can still come out when I want. Anyway I have 50 or so black/Choco split chicks I hadn't really intended on. The eggs should be hatched pure chocolate from here on out but my fertility has been low. I trimmed up their beautiful fluffy butts.

. I have a young cockerel and my original cock in there over 6 hens. I might take out the older boy and see if they are knocking each other off the hens. I've hatched and sold enough chicks to pay for feed up to this point. That a win for me! The AI tester came back out and tested the flock again last week. They are all cleared again but she said they might not being getting paid by the state anymore so the cost would fall on me. By the numbers she gave me I won't be keeping that certification up if I end up needing to pay.

@TakenBackBre I was told by someone who is a certified NPIP tester that the state no longer does the AI testing. I have had to pay for the NPIP testing when I had it done, I'm too far away from Manhattan for anyone to come from there so I have to find an independent tester. It's going to cost me a lot this year to get mine renewed. It was supposed to be done last Sat. but it was too windy to do it the guy said since I don't have a barn to work in. I don't know after this how long I will be able to afford the testing at the rate they're charging either. They want people to be in the program & then they make it harder, it makes no sense.

I've got quite a few chicks that are supposed to be leaving for new homes this weekend, I sure need them to go to clear out my brooders some. I'm supposed to have a few chicks coming for myself soon so I need room for those. I know about the unwanted chicks, I have had 3 broody hens sitting & one of them I have no orders for the chicks, so I hope I can sell them when she gets done hatching. One only had one egg left yesterday, yay! The little bantam cochin got her egg numbers reduced, I just don't need a bunch of those. Next time I'm going to restrict how many eggs they get to sit on.

It was a pretty nice day yesterday without much wind so I decided in the afternoon to go out & burn some piles of brush that were sitting around. I need to get some more picked up & burned on the next day without a lot of wind. Those days have been rare lately. My DH had cut a bunch of trees putting up fencing for the goats & sheep & never did clean up his mess out there. We have one huge pile that is going to be a pyre when we finally burn it. He has been adding to that pile for a couple of years. I didn't want to burn it until things were greened up around it because it's going to be a huge fire.

The lady that does mine worked for Kstate before and I believe she's now working for APHIS she said. It's dr. Lewann Schnieder. She was here just last Tuesday and it didn't cost me anything to update my AI cert. but she told me that the next time I'm due the state might not be paying for it so if I want to keep it up I'll need to pay. Mileage was almost 150.00, 90.00 to run 30 swabs and then her time. So over 1000.00 a year. Which is way too much for me lol. It's honestly probably cheaper to get certified to test and run your own birds for P/T. The last time I said that a private tester got mad

. I'm not saying their time isn't worth anything it's just worth more than I'm willing to pay someone to do what I can do myself. A few girls down my witchita talked about going in together on a bottle of serum; one of them getting certified to test and then testing all their birds. That would cut the cost significantly.

Oh wow, I'm sure there aren't too many people who could shell that out, geez. It's going to cost me $200 just for my NPIP testing this time, that's hard enough for me to swallow on a fixed income.

Check for mites or lice nits. They can drag a bird down to nothing. Also have you wormed your birds recently?

Thanks Danz. I wormed them the last of January so I think they should be good on that. I looked her over good last night but will check closer for mites. I never thought of that. Is Sevin dust okay for that or what does everyone prefer?

Quote: Bre, I am going to order a new bottle of serum. I have a PT test job to do. If you want to get certified I'd be glad to teach you how to actually do it... you don't learn that taking an online test, and split a bottle with you. Of course if you just got the PT done I am sure you won't need that for another year.
The state has done free testing because of a federal grant for AI. But when the funds dry up they will no longer test. Last year cost them a fortune.

You can but I prefer to use Permetrin II and make a spray or a dip. It seems to be much more thorough. Lice and mites get in cracks and crevices in boards so if you don't spray the can just keep coming out.
I hatched my first turkeys today. Only two of them. So exciting!!!

What a day yesterday was started out a normal day at work until my son called me at work at 430 to tell me our house is filled with smoke and the fire alarms are going off what should he do. I told him to get out of the house and call 911 that we are coming home. Which he did and then kept me up to date on what was happening as we fought traffic to get home.

Turns out the power strip that runs our salt water fish tank malfunction and caught fire. Thankfully we have all hard wood through our home so the fire didn't spread but it did fill every room of our house with smoke to the ceiling and caused damage that way.

However my son is fine, my vet is currently boarding and looking over all our indoor pets as no one was allowed to stay in the house not sure how long that will be currently we are at a hotel. My neighbor is watching and caring for my chickens and my vet will be coming over to check them out as well. So yea yesterday sucked for my family but as it could have been so much worse the fire department said if we had had carpet we would have lost the entire house. So we are hugging our son and counting our blessing that it wasn't that bad and that after they get all the smoke damaged repaired we will have a home to go home too.

I'm sorry about the fire, that's the pits. My son just went through a house fire & everything in his house was ruined due to smoke damage, so they have had to take everything down to the studs & start over. They have been staying in a one room apartment for several weeks now & it looks like it will be several more weeks yet. They have a little 2 year old boy, so it's not been a fun experience for any of them.

Horrible experience. I'm glad everyone is ok. I suppose in the long run that is what counts. Good luck with the smoke cleanup. There are companies that claim they can really do a good job of that.
