@FarmerBlake Welcome to our thread! I'm glad you found someone close by to chat with about chickens, that's always fun. I know there are probably lots more but maybe they haven't found BYC yet. Feel free to post pics when you can, we love seeing everyone's chickens & chicks.

Well my hatch is still ongoing, about 3 more chicks hatched during the night. I still have 4 more duck eggs in there as well but those weren't even due till tomorrow & half of them hatched already. It's still really cloudy today, I would love to see some sun now that we got all of that rain. It sure is helping out the grass & plants, I'm so happy to see things green & growing. I really was worried because we're almost out of hay & I will need to turn the sheep & goats out in the field soon. They will be so excited to eat something green after eating hay all winter!

Trish44, we live just a few blocks apart. How's that for looking for people close by! Have pictures posted with more to come. Expect my chickens will soon learn to pose as I am always taking pics of them.

Hello everyone! New chicken farmer here. Talked about getting chickens for a long time, finally did it. Got a coop from hubby's co-worker that wasn't interested in raising chicks (poor guy is insane, right?) and after some modifications (ha ha ha) finally have our coop and run up and running. Proud chicken mom of 3 Phoenix/ISA Brown hens, a Barred Rock hen, Silver Laced Wyandotte hen and a lovely Buff Orpington hen. The three mixed hens are out in the run already. They are 6 weeks old. The other three are still in the brooder box in the basement plotting ways to escape. Was trying to find chicken people in the Kansas City area. I have been told that there are a lot of people raising chickens here in Shawnee but haven't found any on backyard chickens. Might have to start going door to door to find them. Chicken danz, I feel your pain about the garden. About a third of ours is in. Was going to plant again yesterday but it rained most of the day. Won't be able to get in the garden until at least tonight. The trees have been helping to fill the bare patches in the garden with their seeds so this should be fun in a couple of weeks removing the forest from the garden! Can anyone recommend a good wine as I sit for hours removing those buggers? Trying to get pictures posted of our chicks and coop. Computer not as cooperative as it should be. I've suddenly found myself with an overabundance of eggs. What do ya'll use them for? Freezing them isn't for us... I've found that we don't usually use them once they're frozen. Do ya'll have any recipes that use lots of eggs?

Here's what we do so far, but we could use a few more ideas:

• Sausage and Gravy Breakfast Casserole
• Breakfast Burritos

I need something easy because I'm still hurting from my car accident and can't spend too much time in the kitchen without paying for it. Ideas please?!?

I've gotten a lot done today. I have my garden almost entirely planted. I haven't planted okra or cowpeas yet as those both like a soil temperature of closer to 70 but everything else is in the ground. Much of it was planted from seed but the things like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and artichokes, that need extra time, I planted in starter pots back in February and got them transplanted out in the last few days. So now I can kind of sit back and wait for the garden to grow and the soil temp to rise so I can plant those last few things. I wanted to get stuff out today as it was getting too big inside and there is a 90% chance of more rain later today so I figure they'll get watered in nicely.

I then fixed a gate. Well, not fixed exactly - added a latch to it so we can quit having to tie a chain to close it securely. Its been on my to-do list for weeks so I'm glad to finally have it done. And then I fixed the feed room door on the chicken coop. It had gotten to the point it wouldn't close any more and I had to wedge it with something to stop it blowing over. I was able to get it fixed so that it latches properly - and quite easily - again. I've dealt with that door for way too long so I was really glad to get that done.

I let the sheep and goats graze up front today, which is always a treat for them and the LGD pups who get a break from the monotony of being in the pasture. They've enjoyed being out and all have fat bellies from all the green grass they've consumed.

Lost a rooster today....by lost I mean gone and no sign of him. No feathers or sign of a fight...no pieces left behind. He was a campines rooster and one of my top picks for my girls. He crowed at four weeks and was first out and last into the coop. First one to eat from my hand too. I kinda wish I found the remains to better protect my flock. Our german shepherd was out with them all day so it must have been a large bird...we have bald and golden eagles and a few types of hawk out here...but still no feathers found. The other 14 chickens were more happy to see me than normal.
