Consolidated Kansas

Ok, I think I will put them together for now. My silkie won't hatch hers until a week after the Maran so we will see how it goes. I wish my coop was bigger now. LOL, don't tell my DH.

Hi all!
Just popped in to say hi and see how everyone is doing. I'm doing okay even though I am currently chickenless. But the kids are doing really well back in town, so that's what DH and I were hoping for. It's crazy busy with 1 middle schooler, 6 high schoolers, and my 24 year old nephew, who is just finishing up some WATC training this week and ready to apply for jobs.

This time of year I'm thinking about all of you! Time for your hens to get back to work someday soon, and then the hatching begins!. I really miss my poultry. I am contenting myself with planning a garden. DH has built a cute garden shed that looks like a little house. It has his and hers sides with a wall between so we don't drift into each other's spaces.

I could easily house two or three hens on my side! My plan is to get the garden started this year and next year acquire some pet hens. I'm not supposed to have them here but I'm going to give it a shot with maybe Silkies. Aren't they a quiet bird? I'll have to build a stealth chicken tractor for them! Perhaps I could make it look like a shrubbery? LOL!

Miss you guys!

Karen

Karen,
I would speak with Derby as I bet you could easily get approved for 4 probably no roosters but hey always better to get the ok to have the hens then to sneak them in and then have to have them destroyed and given away...not trying to preach just found it was easiest here in the big cities to go before the community and get the ok. Hugs hope they say yes and yes Silkies are quiet :) Great to see you back on the board even if its just to chat :) Don't be a stranger :)

What do you get when you cross a Maran roo with a silkie hen?

Marans is one of those weird breeds where even when talking about a single bird, the breed is still Marans, not Maran

Kind of like Swedish Flower Hens. I still find it odd to see a Swedish Flower Hen Rooster listed for sale.....

To answer your question you'd have a mutt. There is no telling what characteristics the chick will have. If it is a feathered-leg marans, the chicks will likely have feathered legs. However if the marans parent is clean-legged, the chicks may or may not have feathered legs. They may or may not have the beard or crest of the silkie. They could inherit the comb gene from either parent so will either have a walnut or a single comb. They will almost certainly have normal feathering since the silkie feathering is a recessive gene and requires both parents to be silkie. The egg color laid by that combo will probably be light brown, since silkie eggs are cream colored while marans are very dark.

Hello! New here, so I thought I might just copy & paste my new member post by way of introduction if it's not bad form:

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Totally new to chickens (although I did take a poultry science class at K-State back in the day). I'm here to start learning before I start spending money & making helpless birds miserable.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None

(3) What breeds do you have?
None, but I'm interested in learning which breeds are best suited to our area.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Google

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I'm a SAHM, so I get to wear all the hats: teacher, interior designer, painter, plumber, appliance repair lady, gardener, laundress…

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have five kids, 7mo–11y, and we homeschool, so the kids are very much a part of the great chicken adventure to come. For a long time we had four cats and two dogs, but each in its own time grew old and died so I'm animal-less for the first time since grade school. I've considered chickens on & off over the years, so this might be the year I actually jump in and do it.

I miss you so much!!!! I check in on facebook now and then just to see if anything is going on with you. Why can't you have chickens now. You live in a country like setting. Did Derby pass an ordinance? I wouldn't think anyone would ever hear a hen as far as your chicken house (if you still have it) is from the neighbors. If there is an ordinance I would check with the neighbors closest to see if they mind. Just to be safe. How is your health? Your kiddos are all growing up! Wow! Unbelievable.

You'd definitely have a mutt. I've had a couple of birds crossed with silkies. Very broody hen but a real grouch when she was and she never hatched an egg cause she never turned them. If you want an egg layer it would be okay. Neither breed is going to produce anything worth butchering though. I had Marans as well and they are tall but don't have much meat.

I went and picked up my hog meat yesterday. I was hoping to have a final weight of the processed meat but they only provided hanging weight. I have lots of bacon and ham now though. Yum. I'm anxious to try it all.

@Deerfield Acres glad you stopped in, long time no see. I'll bet you feel strange without chickens, I know I would. So what town are you living in now?

I got two new Sebastapol geese last weekend & they fit right into my group. The ganders are over the moon to have more females. I let them out this morning & they sure were making a racket out there. They have been mostly staying in their hoop coop because there isn't anything for them to eat out in the yard anyway, but they do like to get out & stretch & run sometimes.

Danz congrats on getting your pork, I'm sure you will enjoy it. I'm still thinking on getting a pig or two later on, but I have to build a pen first.

Welcome Mamalovescoffee what part of Kansas are you in? There are a huge number of breeds that do great in Kansas so its more of what kind of birds are you looking for? Big egg layers? Fancy birds that you can show? Sweet gentle breeds that your kids can carry around? Do you have favorite colors? Do you want to hatch and raise your own chicks? Are you after little chickens like Batams or big old birds? Do you want have any law in your area regarding chickens?

I am in Lawrence as well. As per your answer to question 1, that is what I planned

to do and thought I did, but there are still mistakes to be made in the real world of backyard chickens! I'd actually like to start a Lawrence chicken group that could perhaps give each other each other support/ideas/experience.
