Consolidated Kansas

I've been trying to get prepared for winter, but for every step forward, I seem to take five steps back. About three weeks ago, I had a bumper-bender. I got clipped crossing a four lane street in Pittsburg. It bent the bumper, but it set off both airbags, so my insurance considered it totaled. It was a 2003 Ford F150. The bad thing was I was needing to get feed. I usually get about 1600 lbs. at a time. The bad thing about my problem was it took the Insurance over a week to get an adjuster. It seems that they were all tied up in Huston and Florida. My other vehicle is a dodge minivan, so I lowered the rear seats so I could get about 12 bags of feed, at a time. When they finally got around to telling me my truck was totaled, I bought me another F150. It's in good condition for a 2010, and a lot less miles than my older one. I did get my insurance check today. It was more than I could have gotten for a trade, but not near enough for what I bought. The good thing about my mishap was no one was hurt, and no one got a ticket. Nothing about chickens, but it did interrupt my chicken plans. My truck this time has a bumper that may be hard to bend.

@Ralph Moyer I'm sorry about your accident & your truck, what a bummer. I'm glad you were able to get another one.

I am most likely going to be having some surgery on my fingers coming up later this month so I'm trying to get things done around here but the weather sure hasn't been cooperating. It has rained 4 days in a row here. It's not like we didn't need it, but not all at once & I sure need days without rain to get coops cleaned out.

Great bumper. I know what you mean on accidents. I have NEVER come out ahead even on a nearly new vehicle. I ended up spending several more thousand out of pocket each time. I'd be up a creek if I didn't have a truck to get feed when I need it. I have to have a truck to pull the feed wagon or to load a pallet of bags in. It's not worth while for me to drive if I don't get a lot at a time.
The rain keeps coming down. We really got hit hard last night. I swear lightening hit the house or something really close. I can't see damage from it yet this morning but I haven't been out to check things out. Water is sitting every where cause the ground was too saturated already.
The ducks and geese are in heaven and my white dogs look like black dogs.

Too quiet here lately. The cold front moved in last evening and it rained and rained again. We have so much water sitting and mud every where. I am really tired of all the mud and no dry area around the place.
My hens have pretty much stopped laying. I had one egg in my hen house last night. The girls in the building are still laying well. The lights come on at 6am there and turn off at 7:00. I try to keep evening as close to the time it actually starts getting dark as I can. I have to have the lights in there to do my feeding and watering. So I'm not using them to stimulate laying other than maybe than the 6am part is earlier than daylight right now. I think maybe they are just more accustomed to having less hours of light in there than the outside girls are.
I bought a couple more cattle yesterday so I really need to think about reducing some more poultry. I sure don't have any I want to give up right now. Other than I need to sell some of my peafowl I hatched this year.
I have a couple people buying some turkey hens from me which I am reluctantly selling. Since I had more Toms than I believed I am shorter on hens than I thought. I guess I should butcher at least one Tom for thanksgiving but I sure hate to. After loosing a couple last year to an accident and the heat it makes me kind of nervous.
Anyway one of the persons buying a hen will be here in an hour or so so I should get around and go figure out which one to sell.

Yeah I know, either everyone is busy or just not posting lately. We had rain like 3 times last night. I was just finishing up feeding my birds when it let loose blowing like crazy & raining like cats & dogs, cold rain too. I was soaking wet & cold by the time I got up to the garage. I had to wait till the first round ended to go back out & feed my dogs & cats out there & get my feed for the ff. It was 49 degrees when I got up this morning, brrr.

I've been working on fall chores, cleaning out coops. I finished my breeder coop & then got my main coop cleaned out yesterday & new shavings put back in. It was a relief to get those things done. Now on to more fall chores, it never ends.

No it doesn't end. I need to get my coop cleaned out and insulated before it gets to cold. I have a lavender, a blue and a splash Orpington roosters that I need to Rehome. They are just to pretty, with great temperaments to butcher. So if anyone is interested let me know!

Also! I have three silkies, that are very sweet, that I need to rehome. They are getting to beat up in my flock. They need to be in a flock of smaller birds.
