Consolidated Kansas

Ok everyone,I need your suggestions. My cat got in a fight with another animal and now the bite is really infected. We gave her amoxicillin and I thought it was gone but it wasn’t. Her whole face is swollen. There are huge pockets of puss under the skin. She scratched it this morning and puss was oozing out. We put her back on amoxicillin, gave her 25 mgs of trazodone to sedate her and are waiting for it to take effect before working on it. The dark spot under her ear is another puss pocket that I haven’t touched. I’m going to clean it out, put some antibiotics in the wounds, and keep up with oral antibiotics. I’m giving her a little trazodone at a time to make sure she gets sleepy without overdoing it. Anything else I’m not thinking about. I know this site is for poultry, but I also know most people have a variety of animals and experiences.

I’m not calling our vet on Christmas when I know I can treat it here. :)

Hmm use really warm water and place "hot compress soaked in Chamoline Tea" on the open spots and puss filled ones to see if you can pull the infection out that way. Then wash the cuts with a sterile solution and cover with Triple Antibiotic Cream or Natural Honey whichever you have on hand. Then make sure to put on a cone of shame if you dont have one you can make by cutting a circle out of a paper plate use duck tape around the edge so it doesnt cut your cat

The paper cone is an excellent idea! Thanks I hadn’t even thought of making one. Thank you. She is the best cat, I feel so bad for her.

We drained both infected sites and rinsed with saline water. Boy was she mad about that. Then I added antibiotic drops inside the infected area. Trying to make the cone of shame now. Giving her oral antibiotics too. We will see how she feels tomorrow. When we opened up one of the puss areas, she shook her head and puss flew all over my husband and I. :sick

She’s now hiding in my bathroom cabinet. Hopefully she starts feeling better soon.......

Just saw your post @CayugaJana. I hope your cat is doing better today. I'll hold back my advice until I see if you took your cat to the vet. I think she needs some stronger antibiotics that are broad spectrum and lots of saline rinses. Let us know what's happening now.

I was just getting ready to give an update! :)

She is doing A LOT better today. We are trying to keep her wounds soft and not scabbed over so any infection can come out. I’m putting an antibiotic ointment called azithromycin 1% on the wounds. Along with the cone of shame. I mixed amoxicillin in with some wet cat food and she scarfed it right down. There is no visible swelling. I can’t believe it. She is back to her loud self like nothing happened. It must be such a relief to have those abscesses drained!:sick

I’m assuming she will need to be on the antibiotics for a good 10 days. Any other advice? I gave her a good once over tonight and nothing is hot to the touch, swollen, or even tender to the touch if you can believe that.

I wouldn't have thought the amoxicillin would work as well as it did. It has been so widely used that most bacteria is resistant to it. But I'm glad it did. Cats can be amazing creatures when it comes to healing. She by the way, matches that throw or blanket she is laying on perfectly. LOL

Am so glad to hear that your pretty kitty is doing so well its so hard when our non speaking kids are hurt and we have to help them even though most the time they don't understand that we are helping them. Give her gentle hugs and lots of yummy wet kitty food from me.
