Consolidated Kansas

Really! Most of the ones we've been to are just some 50+ yr old homemade cages in a corner somewhere. Usually only a floor fan if even that and only during the judging/showmanship competition. Maybe we've been at the wrong places.

The cages we used this weekend are the same ones from the same company as we've seen at opens and state shows.

I thought the whole barn was used for poultry and someone said you all would be adding on. I didn't know it was for rabbits too. The two locals we go to most rabbits are just carried in for the show and then taken home.

Our cages and pins are really nice! but everything that is entered in the fair has to be there day/night for the whole fair. I don't know about the adding on part, it might happen. With all the new kids coming in each year i think we will need em.

Two things here I have two silkies for the first time. Today I tried to chase all my young chicks to the big chicken pen. One of the silkies seemed to not be able to see well. Should I clip the eye feathers to help them see where they are going and to see possible preditors?
On the other side of my small heaven I have killed 6 raccoons and I am still loosing a duck or chicken a night. Good thing I am off for a while I have been on a night vigial, traps shooting etc. Where the heck are they comming from. Down to one male duck and he is injured. Got my fingers crossed. And the hatchery guy is here this week!

KansasKid-I think the rabbit thing is partly to do with heat and partly to do with cage space, but I don't know for sure. We don't keep rabbits. I think they only started it a handful of years ago though and people liked it so much they've kept it up. We've had a lot of new additions too, but none in poultry that I know of. Guess we'll see in a few weeks.

mikeksfarmer-Yes you can trim their feathers so they can see. Definitely recommended for free ranging. Can't say on the raccoons. Can you do more to raccoon proof your coop? Then so long as you remember to lock up every night, you shouldn't have any losses. Electric fencing maybe?

Mike- use the smallest binder clip you can find! You know, those little black clips with the wings that fold up or down? Those are very strong and won't slide out of the front of the poof like most other things will. I've also been known to use electrical tape to make a poof-tail!

When is they guy coming to the feed store?

Ok Rene If I have this right use the clip to catch all the feathers to just clip them off. then they can see well.
On the other side I have well protected main pen and free range area. But you are right. Its just like so many of us I have these aspirations of more birds. Who can resist the hatchery guy or the crossing of your own and often I am not pereparied like I should be. (If we truly love our children we will give them the best!) the truth is clear I need better cages. Actually today I have been reinforceing the wire on the main pen. going to move the youngens in this weekend and going to build more pens that are raccoon safe very soon. Hatchery guy was suppose to be here by the end of the month. I will call as soon as I get off dial up here and see. Post to morrow !

Ok just called them the 17 July. guess I missed them just recently. I drive by almost every day. OH well Ironically I just set a White rock hen with 8 eggs today. That said she should hatch the 18th. Guess I will be looking for this guy to add a few to the hatch. Why not living brooder; no box in the kitchen!
Place; for those of you interisted is Valley feed on Front street in Bonner springs ks.. Just off hwy 7 and Hwy 32 about 1/2 mile east. Last time I was there he had about 30 varieties of chickens day old, also ducks, geese and turkeys. Bantams and standard. I set 8 eggs today under a hen may try to equal that in new chicks. I am hoping its as easy to brood 16 as it is to brood 8. " IDEAL" can be found on line and advertises on BYC all the time. They are from Texas.
Any of you inteisted let me know if I can answer further!

Indeed- the binder clip is ABSOLUTELY Jenn's idea- I forgot to mention that! The Queen of Silkies ought to get her credit!

I do get to point out that the pretty colored binder clips can be purchased at Michael's craft store for fashionable accessorizing, and I own that idea- trademarked it, in fact!
