Consolidated Kansas

Okay - here's a random thing - but worth a shot. I am thinking of tapping my maple trees and trying to boil me some syrup this year - (i am getting into this living off the land thing)

Anybody in Kansas do this?

I have been reading on the web - but still have a lot of questions - and I know the folks here are so helpful

I think the kids just watched an episode on Dirty Jobs or something about making Maple syrup, but I don't know anything personally about it beyond bits and pieces I overheard of the show. Like to eat it, I could help with that.

Oh! I want to do this too. I had a friend suggest tap and put it on the wood stove. cooks it down and humidifys the house. My trees are just now big enough to start tapping. If you learn more and want to chat further let me know. Now thats not much help but I bet that between the two of us we can work out the bugs.

We have made Maple syrup for some time using store bought maple flavoring. I did not know we could tap our trees in Kansas. I have 2 - 4 maple trees, What do I need? What is the best time to tap? Is there different flavors with different variety of trees?

Edit asked one more question.

Daren thanks for the link to procedure on maple syrup. I might have to wait another year before tapping but will look next time im outside. I was impressed that you could tap any maple tree and even some others. I am excited to try this soon.
Oh its so cold out my poor birds!

-2 this morning, 6 degrees in the coop (with a heat lamp near the roost). The girls seemed fine when I took them their warm mash (made from the hated layer pellets). They are out of the wind, but haven't been outside for 2 days and are getting restless. I think I'll refresh their dustbath (in the coop) later this morning and put some shavings over the snow in the run. Brrrrr. Poor chickies.
