Just occurred to me: You should be getting your feed made up for you for all of those pigeons!! The scratch part of mine is very similar to a pro-pigeon feed, but it breaks down to about $10/50# if you were just using the grains and no UltraKibble. That's WAAAAAAAAAAY cheaper than buying the pigeon feed from the feed store!

Way cheaper than scratch, even! And better choice in grains!

I'm OVER the feed manufacturers and will be mixing my own forever, now...can you tell?

I'm thinking now of also having a sprouting grains mix made up for sprouting all summer...that's going to be my next trip out there! Perhaps my hubby can keep a blade of grass or two in the lawn if I sprout for the biddies.

Ten dollars aint bad, but I have noticed that these dang pigeons have only been eating milo and wasting the rest. So I been feeding them straight milo, and its $6.36 a 50 lbs.

Hi all, I'm looking for someone who attended the huge K&L sale in Southern Kansas, Feb. 26-27, and got a good deal on a cage full of Buckeyes!

If you know, or have heard of anyone who is thrilled with their Buckeye buy, please PM me, I'd like to get in touch with them!

They may not know what they have, and I'd like to buy some of their hatching eggs.

There were 2 lots I know of, one small lot which were Rau line; and more importantly, one larger lot which were * actual birds from Bill Braden's own personal Buckeye flock * . Bill Braden no longer keeps the breed.

Not to mince words, these are important birds for the sake of genetic diversity... Bill Braden has had his own line since the 1980s. I hope whoever has them takes good care of them! They are not "just any old Buckeye" by any means.

So, Kansans... help, help?

I did... and they won't. I don't understand it myself, but apparently the guy who runs the auction has better things to do with his time.

Renee,

The flock is LOVING the feed! The cuckoos are picking through it and eating certain things first. The other mixed flock, just eats it all!

As to the poo - haven't noticed a huge difference, but I will know better when I clean the poop hammocks this weekend. Let us know the next feed run, we will probably take a few more bags. In the last batch, did you still mix in ultrakibble?

Thanks!

Great!

Yes, that's the new formula of UltraKibble- they switched immediately when there was the Gulf spill from the crustacean meal and went to Salon and fish meal. This is the first from that batch. It's a bit higher in fat, but that seems to be a great bonus. I'm very happy with the new formula. What I'm delighted with is the lack of poop and the slower consumption- I always noticed it with the old UK, but this is even better- I think the soy-free formula is da bomb!!

I hate that saying, but thought I'd do it just once...

To my knowledge he is a busy guy.

I have a couple questions for you. Question 1 (not to make you upset, but to try to get more bidding from you at the time they sold!) If you knew so much about these cages, then why didn't you buy them and ensure them a good home?

Now more importantly, do you know anything about the cages that would even make it remotely possible to find the buyer? Do you know the lot number on the cage in question or the buyer number of the person who bought them?

With out those pieces of information even people with nothing to do with their time wouldn't be able to find out for you.

I wondered if you'd see this.

I don't think a lot of people realize that it's impossible for the auctioneer to keep track of every individual cage that sells without at least a lot number to go back and check.

Years ago I used to clerk sometimes for our neighbor who was an auctioneer....not poultry, but farm and household auctions. People would come up to me a week or two after an auction asking what this or that brought....I'd tell them I had no clue and they'd say well you were clerking when it sold how come you don't remember? I'm sorry but when you're calling or clerking hundreds or thousands of items in an auction you just don't remember every item's price.

I live in Indiana, and did not learn about the sale until last night, when I called the gentleman in Kansas that Bill Braden sold his flock to, to ask about hatching eggs.

If I could go back in time, and show up at the auction and outbid everyone by a few hundred dollars, I would. Or I would go further back in time and tell this gentleman to sell the birds through one of the Buckeye clubs, that they're an important line of Buckeyes which should be treasured and kept up.

The thing which saddens me the most is that the people who bought them, only know that they are Buckeyes. They don't realize that they are Bill Braden's own Buckeye flock from Oklahoma, which is a huge thing nationally. Mr Braden used to sell the hatching eggs from these birds for $60/dozen. He always had a long waiting list. Not just any old Buckeye. He's worked on the breed since the 1980s, long before there was a Buckeye revival. Unfortunately he was forced to sell his birds last year, when he fell gravely ill.

Now, I know the auctioneer would not know everything that passed his gavel. It must be a mountain of paperwork. The gentleman who sold them is keeping an eye out for the lot number in case he hasn't thrown it out already. I could give you his name by PM if it mattered. But it sounds like it is water under the bridge. I will have to rely on word of mouth and poultry people - who all seem to know other local poultry people! - to get the word out. At least, I hope that will lead somewhere.

Best - exop
