Consolidated Kansas

I could also send it home with my sister some time too if you need it soon. Thanks for letting me use it. Let me know if you want to come buy some more stuff. I'm always glad to take your money!

Does anyone check this Kansas thread anymore? I'm new! I'm wanting to know where to get chicks locally. I'm in the Wichita area. I don't need them right away- I still need to build the coop, but I'm wanting to get as much info as I can for now! Won't start building our coop until after our vacation here in a couple of weeks, and I'm assuming it will take longer than I expect it too, since that is what everyone has said.

Are there any swap meets around this area? When I was a kid, we lived in Belle Plaine and we had chickens and we used to go to the swap meets all the time, but I don't think they do that anymore? Am I wrong???

This time of year they're harder to find since chick days at the feed stores are done. However if you keep an eye out on Craigslist you'll see some eventually. I see them on CL pretty much year round. If you really get desperate, contact me. I don't have chicks but do have an incubator and if you wanted to order some hatching eggs on BYC or eBay, I could hatch them for you.....

Welcome Hawkeye95 !
No swap meets around Wichita that I know of but maybe someone else knows of some.
If you need a hand building the coop let me know.

And welcome to the Kansas thread! I lived in Wichita for 10 years, but have been away from there for many years. What kinds of chicks are you looking for? I have quite a few, but I am a long ways from Wichita. I'm sure there are some swap meets down there somewhere. Craiglist, as mentioned, is also a good source.

Be sure to come back and let us know how your progress on you coop is going.

So exciting seeing so many people who live close to me! I'm just south of Haysville, out in the country. I've got horses and my husband has been drug kicking and screaming into this chicken idea! I grew up with chickens, but I'm going to say I'm pretty much a newbie with them, because really, it was my dad that took care of them. However, I did do 4H with my White Crested black polish (got first place at the fair!). That was a loooooong time ago.

I told my husband I'm going to go all "Amy Mathews" (HGTV contractor) on him and build the coop myself! I have very lofty plans, but definitely worried they are beyond my ability. However, I'm still going to go for it regardless! My husband is very handy in the extreme, he built our horse barn and stalls. But like I said, he's not sold on this idea and I think he wants to see how far I'm going to go. He'll be surprised! (and I do expect him to jump in when I need help)

I really want the barred rocks, a rhode island red, EE, and I'm not sure what else. I'd like larger eggs, but I also want a couple White crested polish because that was what we raised when I was a kid. I only want about 8 chicks. Is there someplace to order them online where they will only sell you about 8-10 chicks? I've been Googling hatcherys and it seems their minimum is around 15 chicks. That's way too many for me! I currently have a white baby turkey. Crazy, I know. But I was out driving and he was out in the middle of no where (no homes close by) and dumped in the ditch. He was just a tiny fluffy baby when I got him, and now he's feathered out a bit, although his neck is still fluffy. He's all alone, so I do want to move on this soon!

I'm not sure who would dump a turkey, but he has helped in swaying my husband, since little Seymore is such a sweetie and follows you around, wants to be held and then peeps in that very unhappy way when you leave him. For now.. I have stapled chicken wire around the posts under my back deck. It won't really keep determined predators out, and so I've been putting him in at night in a box in the garage. I think he's too little to be out, anyway.

BTW- anyone know when newbies are able to post pics on here?

Thank you for the offers with help building my coop and hatching chicks! So nice of you all! I hope by the time I start my coop, I'll be able to post pics of my progress!
