Hey are you sure your birds don't have mites? It sounds like that is the problem if their back end is getting pecked. Sevin will treat that. It is important to treat mites rather than just end the pecking. They can kill a chicken eventually. It wouldn't hurt to at least treat them and their living quarters to make sure.

I don't know how old yours are but I had some chicks doing the same thing. They did out of boredom and over crowding in the brooder. I split them up and put Vicks Vapor Rub on their butts. The chicks would only peck once at the bloodied rumps with the Vicks on them.

Loralee, Hope this is a better day for you with your building. I am proud of you for sticking to it. We all make errors and I think you are doing great!
To the rest of you, Just letting you know I still have one Great Pyrenees female pup left. I have some people wanting her but I don't like the situation she would be put in. She is around chickens ducks etc all the time and is great with them. If you know other people that need a great guard dog have them contact me. PM for a phone number. she is now 10 weeks old.
My adult dogs did an awesome job night before last. They cornered a coyote out in the corn field and you wouldn't have believed the sounds coming from there. I was so proud of them. They not only kept the coyote from getting close but they were working together to kill it. They were so proud of themselves afterward too. It was like they were saying, "I did good, Mom! Right?"

My parents were just approved for this program. They got a new heater and AC installed just yesterday. Warning: Lots of paper work and it takes a few months to get approved. If you reside in your house for 5 years you don't have to pay it back. If you leave you have to pay for it. It took a while but it was a Godsend for them. I hope this isn't another one of those programs to be cut.

My mom emailed this to me.

Thanks for the welcome everyone! I was just about to ask a question about getting chickens actually! Does anyone know of a place I can get healthy chicks locally?? (Lawrence area) I'm totally new to this so sorry for asking annoying questions!

I bet ChooksChick lives right around the corner from you. She'll probably be on later- I'd ask her about someone locally! Maybe even she'd have something. I don't know!

I had to run back to Lowes this morning and I bought the subflooring for my coop!!!! YAY!! It's 3/4 inch floor, so it's pretty darned thick. I also got the missing board I need for my joist, and then I got 4 more treated 2X4X8's to screw into the floor to build my walls on. I thought about putting regular un-treated wood right on the subfloor, but then I got real worried about it possibly rotting, and I figured this was peace of mind. The rest is untreated wood. I bought Porch Paint this morning, too! SO, I'm going to spend this morning painting the subfloor - front and back so that when I lay it down, every scrap of wood will be coated and protected, including the underside.

What all did you do with your underside of wood floor?? Everything so far is treated lumber except for the subfloor now. And I'm going to paint mine with the porch paint to protect it on the underside... is that enough? I'm really worried about it being exposed to the elements. Lowes laughed when I asked if they had weather treated subflooring. I took that as a "no". My husband says I'm worrying over nothing, but I just don't want my floor rotting out any time soon.
