Consolidated Kansas

Thanks for the positive feedback! It's been challenging, but the problem solving is half the fun.
Hawkeye, I've been really impressed with your coop building! If I hadn't had to go to school starting Tuesday, I really wanted to help you with your plywood. Alas, my summer is over....If you're taking little ones to downtown, you'll just be blocks from my house in Riverside. Too bad I won't be home

I found another reason to be thankful I am older now. I am so happy to be free of getting kids in to school mess; not to mention the ridiculous expense! And just wait until your kids go to college! When you pay $100-200 for every book on top of that tuition, dorm fees, meals, etc that really adds up. So what ever happened to the concept of FREE public schools?
Yes Hawkeye my chick did fine. I put it back in with the parents and I can't even tell which one it is now.

Msjfrizzle, ooh, Riverside! One of my really close girlfriends lives in Riverside, too! They have a cute little bungalow, but they are trying to sell it right now. They wanted to find a larger home right in their neighborhood, but decided that they were not finding anything updated enough (or too updated and pricey...) so they are looking out west. But I love that area, and the park in there is awesome. It's the First United Methodist that has their services on TV- they have a really great preschool. My 7 yr old went there, too. Are you excited for the new school year? Last night it really seemed like the teachers were excited to get started again and we've got a guy for my oldest this year, which I think will be really great. It was so funny- he's decorated his class in a sports theme- BIG time! He has blow up soft balls, soccer balls, footballs... and like 5 of each in a cluster hanging from the ceiling in the room.. then he had created this HUGE basket ball hoop out of some kind of weeping tile (the black bendy looking downspout stuff you can get to direct water) and put that on the ceiling with a big blow up basketball. It was really over the top and cute.

Danz, yes, putting kids in schools is getting pricey- I'm NOT looking forward to college. We have already started accounts for each kid we pay into monthly. We're hoping we'll be prepared. I don't even want to think what I've spent on buying supplies- all the notebooks, folders, paper, etc... for each kid. I know it'll be nothing compared to later, but still. It took me 7 years to get my bachelors degree- and I wasn't messing around. I got caught in the middle of the new changes and state requirements for my degree and they added several more hours (i think it was around 15 hrs...) I don't think there is such a thing as a "4 year degree" anymore. If anyone can do it in 4 years now it would surprise me... They should call it a 5 yr degree. I was going for a dual degree which is why mine took 7 years, I ended up dropping the idea of getting two degrees at once. But at least now it won't take long to finish the other if I decide to do so. My parents paid for all that. I didn't really even think about how much it cost them to do that for me until we started planning for my own kid's college funds. My brother went to college 8 years!! LOL!! They actually drew the line after the 6th year. He did get a dual degree at KU and then went on to law school at Washburn. He's been a lawyer for a few yrs now. I bet that killed my parents. They never said anything to us though, about how much it all was. They never even joke about it- just took it as it was. Ahhh- those were the 'good 'ole days'.

College was the best years- so much freedom. I'd love the idea of free Public schools when it comes to college!! Don't think that will ever happen! As it is, they have been raising the tuition fees for public schools.

My DH did that once. She had 11 babies in her pouch attached to the tits. I didn't realize it until she dried a little and the pouch came open. I felt terrible but I hate opossums even worse than coons. Those babies didn't have hair yet or anything. I knew I couldn't keep them alive and if I did, what would I do with them? So I put them in a towel and had my DH dispatch them to the creek. I can't do that but he can, so it's his job to be the mean guy. Later after I got over feeling bad I liked to brag that he got 12 opossums with one shot.

oh my gosh- those things are the CUTEST ever!! My friend took in 5 babies once when the momma died and she fed them the goat milk supplement from the farm store with a little syringe. They all survived! She let them go once they were really eating good on their own and were much bigger. I think it might rain again here! It's looking dark... ooooh, I hope so!

We got almost 2" of rain last night. I guess I have the opposite problem some of you are having. I was going to mow today because it is my day off. I can't mow now because it is too wet. Last time I mowed I had to set the mower all the way to the top just to get through the tall, thick stuff. Where it is hard to mow, the weeds are growing out of control. Now I'm going to have to mow some other time, and it's going to be so tall and tough to get through it will take me a while.

Possums. Ugh. We have shot several possums that turned out to have a pouchful. It's kind of creepy to kill a possum and then see their skin wiggling because there's babies in there. It gives me the creeps and chills just to think about it.

I came home from work the other day at about 3:30a.m. There was a possum rooting around in the front yard. I had my 9mm with me, so I got out of the car and was going to dispatch it, but as soon as I opened the car door my glasses fogged completely over from being cold from the air conditioner and then hitting the warm humidity outside. I couldn't see a thing and the possum ended up running into the weeds before I could get a clear shot.

I enjoy reading about you Wichita folks. I lived in Wichita for 10 years on the west side. Although I enjoyed it at the time, and enjoy visiting, I'm such a country girl hick now I'm pretty sure it would be hard for me to go back.

Since I can't mow, I guess I will go out and clean chicken pens. They need it.

I'm getting ready to thin down my birds for the winter. If anyone is interested, send me a PM. I have all the varieties listed in my signature.

I hate to complain after so many weeks without rain but.... Why does it rain as soon as I need to start prepping the coop area? I have everything (almost) ready to go and that area of the back yard is solid mud.

Apparently I can never be happy.
