I've got an old 1983 Dodge pickup. I've had this truck for 25 years, and I've never had an accident with it. Last fall my hubby hit a deer with it, then this spring he hit a turkey that took out the passenger side mirror. I swear he is a magnet for wildlife!

For a while there every vehicle we owned had hit a deer, EXCEPT the pickup. Can't say that any more.

my current car has a dent in the hood where a deer sat on it. I'd say I hit it, but I was pretty much stopped by the time he hung a left and jumped, landing butt first on my hood. And then he trotted off like he was late for a date.

The guy that rents my land was mowing hay and ran over a hen turkey and her nest. He brought me 7 eggs that weren't broken. I hatched all 7 of them. One died at about 3 weeks. She was just not growing like the rest. I've had lots of people want to buy these guys from me. I'm thinking I should get a wildlife permit and actually start raising wild turkeys. I never wanted turkeys at all but I really like these guys. They are predominantly brown with black markings.
I just went out and fed and watered everything. The turkeys are not happy with their new quarters. They are cowering in the house end. Sure hope they get out and start to enjoy some open air soon. I guess if you spent your life confined to an oversized rubbermaid bin the great outdoors would seem scary.
As far as vehicles go, I drove 160 miles a day for over 20 years and never hit a deer. The biggest animal damage that happened was: an owl swooped down one night to get a mouse and collided with and broke a big hole in my windshield.
My better half totaled like 4 vehicles during that time by hitting deer.

aww, Danz that is so sweet of you for hatching out those turkey! I bet they are just cute! I still think my turkey is cute.

You should totally get a license and see if you can raise/breed them and release. Could you start with the ones you have now, or do you have to release these? Wow- everyone talking about wrecking their cars. I've only had one accident, and it was because someone ran a stop sign and hit my drivers side and plowed me straight into a telephone pole on my front drivers side quarter panel. That was fun. THEN- it got even better, I was shook up and confused with what the heck happened and the lady jumped out of her car and ran over to me and started yelling and cussing at me at the top of her lungs! She said it was MY fault! I wasn't even out of my car when she started in on me. Fortunately, there were like 4 people who witnessed her running the stop sign and not even slowing down. She also ended up being only 18 and was driving a car that was rented to someone else- illegal. She tried to sue me later, too, even after the police officer gave her a couple of tickets. Her lawyer dropped the claim when I faxed over the police report. Geez.

Other than that, I have hit a raccoon- on accident. OH!! I forgot, I hit 3 dogs all at the same time! A St.Bernard, a pointer and a black lab. I was going to work at 6am in the morning and it was dark and they all 3 of them ran in front of my car out of the ditch, I hit the brakes and swerved just a little bit, but still hit them. The Sheriff came out, took down the rabies tags, located the owners with the tags, had them come out and pick up their dead dogs, and then gave them a ticket for not having them leashed or confined in their own yard!! Their home owners insurance paid for my car repairs. Crazy, hu!? The owner was mad at me and I was still there having my car towed when he came with his truck to get his dogs and get his ticket. I felt terrible, but angry too that he let his dogs run around the highway. HE killed his dogs... This was along an interstate highway that I hit them on- that is awful he let them run loose!

Around here the farmers refer to the wild turkeys as "rats with feathers." I have a neighbor who blames them for the loss of his beloved bob-white quail from his windbreak. He says they took over the territory and ran the quail out.

I know you like them, and I would probably do the same thing you are (I think they are kind of neat to watch), but just saying....

Other than animals hits I've been rear ended 3 times at a dead stop. All three were drunk, two of them in unregistered cars. Two cars totaled, one I had just sent the last payment on. I still pucker up a little at stop signs years later.

i log about 30k a year. or i did until may
