Consolidated Kansas

Yep I like that smiley!
I don't even know if my corn will be worth cutting. It looks pretty poor. No rain was a killer. My neighbor just cut his milo and made it into big round bales. It wasn't worth the harvest.

Great selection! Can we add them to the BYC smiley library? I'm sure they would be used a lot by people waiting for eggs, waiting for chicks to hatch, etc.

The corn here is fantastic. I think we are the only place in the state that got good rainfall at the times we could use it. Also, I think the corn here could survive on humidity alone!

I just about fell out of my chair recently when I heard the price of ground here is ACTUALLY SELLING for up to $6,000 per acre of farmable land!

I guess we bought in at the right time. Doesn't look like we will be buying any more, though, at those prices. There was a quarter section to the west of us I was hoping we could buy. It won't happen now.

I uploaded the gifs to my picture library here on BYC. Feel free to copy them to your computer and upload them. I don't think a simple copy/paste will work, but it might.

I wish I'd purchased more land when I bought this place. There was another 220 acres for sale at the time. I paid way too much for this place cause the real estate market was very inflated right then. The spot was perfect for me to get to work and I wanted to be in the country. That was before the big crash in the economy. I would have rather gone further into debt to assure that I won't ever have neighbors close by. Right now the nearest are a half mile away.
If I'd waited another year I could have bought something really nice for the money.

We got our place for a steal. 160 acres and there was an old farmstead here, and a guy that had lived in the old farmhouse for 15 years. He never paid any rent because the owner was his aunt and felt sorry for him. He had been in prison on meth charges. The place was a mess. The 5 acres around the house had every type of junk and trash you could imagine that had accumulated for 15 years, including the remnants of his drug making business. None of the neighbors wanted to mess with it because they thought the aunt would sell the ground but not the place where he lived. He had threatened some, and all the neighbors were afraid of the guy. Very intimidating character.

Leave it to my hubby. He negotiated a deal, the guy moved out, we bought the ground for less than half what the ground adjacent to it had just sold for. It was then my job to clean the place up while my husband was at work and I was home. I hauled over 100 loads of junk out, had the old house torn down, put in a new house and shop. We added another barn last year, and next year we will add my poultry barn. We still have a lot of work to do, but I am pretty happy with the progress we have made.

Hello from my little rosecomb roo. Isn't he a cutie? He takes good care of his little pullet and gives her kisses. Cute little pair.

Something everyone needs in their chicken supply tool box is ZIP TIES! I've found more uses for those things with the chickens than I ever have anywhere else. They make pretty good leg bands, too!

We just got done cutting our corn today.....about 1/2 a normal crop and it was even irrigated. The dryland corn here all burned up weeks ago. Hopefully our beans will be better or it's gonna be a long cold winter here. We'll start sowing wheat in about 3 weeks so I hope we get some rain before then. Never good when you have to dust it in.

Okay, so here it is!! We got the trusses finished and put on with hurricane clips. We suspended trusses off the front and back. It will give me 16 inches of cover over the front and back. There will also be a vent at the top under the roof on either end- both north and south.

And here is the back of the coop that is facing south- showing the pop door opening and the window/vent above that.

Aha! Progress is being made! Good idea about the overhang on both ends. I'm sure you won't regret that.

Hey, does anyone out there use "butt end" bands for legbands? I don't know anything about them. Are they considered a permanent band? How do you apply them?

Could you all tell me of a good butcher to send some of our birds to? My flock has overgrown the space that we have for them and its starting to get ugly in there!!! I'm in Ottawa but I travel to KCK no less than 5 days a week. What should a good butcher cost? Do you know if they will take as many as 10 at one time to do? Thanks for your help.
