Thank you so much! Chicks arrive next week! I can't wait to see it full of birds either!

Oh gosh, you are so funny about your house buying issues! I mean, I feel your pain, but yet love your humor. My DH and I built our house and our builder was amazing to work with. So easy. We bought the land a couple years prior to building. Owning your own home is really going to give you a sense of pride and any upgrades you do to it will only increase your value and equity. I think it will be hard to get everything fit down into 940 sq feet... but if you REALLY get down to brass tacks about what you really need, it should be easy enough to purge. Just think --have I used this in the last year, and do I really need it? I am a minimalist - no joke. I refuse to have knick knacks sitting around collecting dust, and I don't like a lot of furniture. I like clean open spaces. I file all of our important papers and the rest is shredded and thrown out. Clothing is paired down as best I can.. but I have to admit, I have a LOT of clothes. I really need to work on that. I get rid of the kids toys as soon as a piece breaks or we loose a puzzle piece.. etc. Just keep up on it and it won't overwhelm you. You really can live comfortably in a small space if you utilize your walls as storage and keep things off the floor. I love IKEA! We just bought tons of wall units this summer and now the house is so neat and orderly! And... BIG HUGE CONGRATULATIONS on your new farm! I'm sure you are going to just love it so much.

I think that'd great you are getting married too! So fun! I hope you have a great honeymoon in Colorado!

That's a shame Hawkeye. I wondered about the wind factor in Kansas. I think I mentioned before we use metal on most of our roofs now. But since you already have a sheaved roof you might as well use shingles. It is just so darned time consuming. If you don't have one and own an air compressor rent or barrow an air roof nailer. It will save your arms and time. I think that is why we went to metal, to cut some expense and cut some time.
So what color are you painting your coop? You will want to get that done soon. Can you believe you'll have babies in a week? Do you have a bin or something ready for them yet?
I too keep a bunch of supplies on hand. Since I had 5 kids and dealt with just about anything possible plus took first aid and CPR for work for about 30 years just basic knowledge goes a long ways. I still get panicky when it comes to my animals though.
Speaking of daily tragedies I had another one Saturday when I was gone. The jerks that used to live here just threw left the bailing twine every where. I just keeps resurfacing and I've picked it up since I bought this place. Apparently the pheasants dug up another small wad of it. One of the pheasant hens got her feet tangled in it. Pheasants don't quit when one of them gets down. Her mate and the other hens literally ate her until she died. Sure glad it wasn't some of my new breeds.
I hate having to deal with losses. I had several new hatches yesterday, some chicks and some button quail. I guess it all evens out.

We have already started painting the siding. It's not up yet- we just laid the sheets of siding on the saw horses to paint. It's going to be a yellow color. It's called CornSilk. I wanted a more stronger yellow color- but my DH was against that and we compromised with a light creamy yellow color. We already put two coats of paint on the facia board under the eaves. The trim will be white. I wanted a yellow and white cottage look. I think it will still read as that, though. Anyway, when we go to put up the siding, it will already be painted! I hope that is a smart idea! LOL!

We have a nice pneumatic air nailer gun and we also have a large air compressor. We'll definitely use this for the roof so we can put those nails in really fast. No hammering involved.

That is so sad about your pheasants that tore into the downed bird. WOW, they show no mercy, do they. The bailing twine- it's so dangerous! We buy round bales, and when we put it in our round feeder, I cut off the twine and pull it off the bale completely and then throw it away. I NEVER take chances that the twine will wind up on the ground or left in the bale of hay. I know a lot of horse people that leave the twine on the bale while their horses eat it. That is sooooo dangerous, it disturbs me. I've seen horrible horse injuries from it (wrapped around legs, throats, and even twisted into their guts because they unknowingly ate it!). It kills horses all the time. I can imagine the damage it would do to any animal. That is one of my pet peeves -- people not disposing properly of their twine. Anyway, I'm very sorry that happened to your bird. So sweet you have more baby button quail and chicks! FUN! I bet your place is so fun!

I hear ya! My last move was from a 3000 SQ ' Victorian to a1600 Sq ' ranch. What a huge difference. I still have stuff crammed everywhere and rent a storage unit after having an auction. My house is so crowded. I wish I was like Hawkeye. I am not organized and DH and I are both pack rats. We just don't throw anything away that can be reused. I am way too sentimental too. I have so many things I saved from my kids and things I've bought or remind me of childhood memories. Now I am saving everything I can from my parents due to their fragile declining health. I know it won't bring them back. People say you always have your memories but that isn't true as you will find as you get older. Things fade, but when you see something from the past it brings back those memories. I guess that is why I am like I am.
Hawkeye, where did you find an Ikea. I used to order from them but now almost everything they have can't be shipped.

we used their online room designer to figure up how we wanted all of our wall units to look like. Then we printed out that sheet. THEN, we planned an overnight trip to Dallas, TX where we spent two days shopping in their store and buying up everything we needed. We even ended up with more space saving ideas than we originally had thought of. I'll take a pic of our living room and post it here in a bit. It has saved us PILES of stuff that we used to drag in and have no place to put it! And most of it, you only need it for a couple of weeks or a couple of months until you can throw it away. But it has to go somewhere in the meanwhile. It also gave me some space to show off antiques that have been passed down in my family that I could not get rid of. But if it's not behind glass, I don't keep it. In fact because of my super purging abilities (LOL!!!) I have more space than stuff!!! It's a good feeling. There is also an IKEA in Denver, Co. But, we checked mileage and it was closer for us to go to Dallas. It only took us 6 hours to get there. Actually, it was our 11 year anniversary this summer and we went over that same weekend and our parents watched the kids. It was so fun! We saw lots of people from out of state in the parking lots with big trailers, trucks, etc. It was funny to see we weren't the only ones with that idea. We went really modern with our furniture, but they have country, etc styles of furniture to suit anyone or any type of home.

Dallas is definitely closer. One of my daughters lives in Denver. It is a minimum of 10 hours out there. My other daughter lives in Austin, another 10 hour drive but Dallas is like 7-8 hours. Anxious to see your pictures. I'm an antique freak so modern won't work for me. Several of my light fixtures and a couple lamps I have came from Ikea. I also have some wire curtain hangers that came from Ikea. I really love their stuff. I have always wanted to go spend an entire day in one of their stores. Maybe some day.
I'm putting off going out to feed the birds this morning. I am cold. I just dread getting outside. I have to get in gear soon because I have to go to PT and then to see my parents.

okay, had to deal with kids before I could get a picture.. but here it is. This is our "IKEA" room. LOL! The brown buffet is already something we owned prior to going to IKEA. I loved it so much, it had to stay in the room. It's great storage anyway. If you can imagine, we had NOTHING on our walls- and just had the DVD player sitting on the brown buffet over where the tv is. It was a mess, and we had no place to put anything. We even found the perfect shelving unit for the little pony wall over the stairs. The leather furniture did not come from IKEA-- but they do have sofas, etc there. I just am a really big fan of the 1950's mod furniture. Anyway, IKEA isn't all modern, there are lots of other styles to choose from.

We also put wall units downstairs to help with clutter- and it is so nice and tidy.

Great to see you back! Congratulations on the house and congratulations on the engagement! You've got a lot on your plate for a while, but it will settle down and be worth all the hassle you are going through. Best wishes for everything!
