Animals have a way of doing that to us. But we love them so we do what we have to. I can remember back in the 70's, my ex's familly had horses. They just stuck them in the pasture and ignored them. No worming, no meds, no special feed and they seemed to do just fine. Once my daughter got horses I couldn't believe all the expense involved. Her favorite mare at one point got colic and never got over it. She took her to K-state. It ran up a several thousand $$ vet bill and her horse died anyway. I guess that is one reason I have never considered having a horse. I don't think I could stand loosing one if I got attached.

OMG, Hawkeye! What a terrible day! I'm sure the vino DID put you in a better mood.

I often have a glass of wine before I go to bed. Once that glass of wine is gone, I am "out" like a light! I sure hope your mare does better now. I know they are miserable when that happens, and it is so hard to watch and know they are in pain.

I have 4 horses right now. 2 Haflingers and two arabians that I agreed to take in as rescues. My haflingers are fat butterballs. Those arabs, though. Gee whiz. They are skinny and look terrible. We can't seem to keep the weight on them. DH ordered a bunch of wormer for all of them. I wonder if that isn't part of the problem with the arabs. We will see.

Thanks for the compliments on my cages. I am really eager now to get them moved to the barn and get the new residents into their homes. I am still trying to decide what I want to use for feeders and waterers in there. I may have to order some more pop bottle waterers. Those work really nice for small cages.

Ivy- Those cages look fabulous! You did an awesome job! I wish I could be handy like that.

Hawkeye- I'm sorry about your mare. I hope she is on the road to recovery now. I am also sorry about your truck. I hope it is something fairly easy/cheap to fix.

Thanks guys! My mare has a belly full of mineral oil right now, so she should be feeling better soon. I was also upset because I could not find my Banamine-- my Dh moved it and he can't remember where he put it... or if he threw it away!! ACK! So I bought another bottle of banamine and picked up more syringes so I can give it to her if I need to. That is usually the first thing i do- shoot her up and give her bute. But I couldn't even find my bute and I just recently bought a huge tub of it!

Ivy- the mare that colicked is a german Arabian- she's really small and petite. Gorgeous, black skin and with age, she is now snow white. When I got her, she was a dark grey/black. Her white color came in beautifully as she aged. I've had her since I was a kid, and I used to run barrels on her in highschool and college. So she is with me for life and I'll do what I can for her. I check everyone over every day. Look at their eyes and legs, etc. She is now 31 yrs old and I am having a lot of trouble keeping weight on her. My other two are paints and they are fat. But this mare just started losing weight and I'm having a heck of a time keeping her looking good. The vet talked with me about options on her weight issues. He said she has fat deposits in really odd places that could be markers for a thyroid problem. We're going to try a couple other things first before we test her. But he said the meds don't cost much, but I sure hope that isn't that. We're also going to try a diff wormer, and not just the Ivermectin- do one for tape worms, he hopes that is her issue. Could be a cause for colic, too. Anyway, right now, I'm trying "Cool Calories", have you heard of that? I can't tell if it is working, because all of a sudden she started losing weight in the last two weeks. Hoping that the wormer will help. I have been using the wrong one, apparently that won't kill tape worms. After all these years, I still learn!

Danz, that is really, really sad about your daughters horse! She must have twisted her intestine. So far, I haven't ever had a twist, only an obstruction. I've been lucky, I've had the most treatable kind of colic. We have a very good surgery center here for that, but even so, it's an ify deal. I love their hospital- that is where Cassie (my mare) went last year when she nearly died. They kept her on IV's in her stall and they have 24 hr cameras that they have set up and watch at home when they are on call. This barn and surgery center is cutting edge, never seen anything like it. It's a newer facility and they specialize in equine surgery.

My chicks are doing great! My most friendliest are my Barred Rocks, and then the Wyandottes! All of them come right up to me when I reach my hand in their brooder. The other chicks scatter and scream- but these ladies run to me and jump in my hand! I love them!!! Then the silkies are nice, but they don't come to me. Then the Polis-- well, those things are so squeaky when I pick them up and squirm a lot and want out. I just pet them and calm them down. I hope they get used to me, we're going to be together for a while.

Chickens are definatly cheaper hawkeye. I'm sorry to hear about your mare. Last spring I spent $300 to get x-rays, drugs and a 2 day stay at the vets on my beagle who I got from the pound, just to find out he had gotten pens in his knee before I got him, and now has arthris flare ups at 5. The flare ups are horible because he lets out an ear peircing bay for several minutes strait, I feel so bad because there's not much I can do to make it feel better and the intire thing has kind of turned me off the idea of adopting dogs. Ivy, those pens look great, I'm jelouse!

There was a heavy fog here this morning and the ground is damp from it, as well as the dogs, the chickens, and the ducks. Just the same it is moisture in a sense. I had to go chase the neighbors dog away again and got my feet cold and wet. I guess I should quit procrastinating and take care of that situation before it gets worse.
Hawkeye hope your horse is doing much better.
It's amazing the technology they have now for animal care facilities. My vet is still an old fashioned kind. He has a tiny building and no real special facilities. He goes out to the farms for large animal care. I know my friends with horses had to take them to Emporia to have surgery on one of their horses. He's pretty good for general care but sure doesn't have the place to do the big stuff.

I know this is probably a shot in the dark but I am trying to locate a young girl that showed some Delaware Bantams at the Kansas Classic last year in Hutchinson KS. If anyone has any contact information for her/her parents or knows her could you please PM me. Thanks for any help.

Ivy, I have one roo that might be considered a black breasted red. He is a dark red but his chest underside and tail are black. There appears to be a little lacing in the black on his breast.
I don't have anything that is barred. The closest would be one female that I would call silver. She is predominantly white with blackish colored bars on her back. I just sold another one like her.
Speaking of which I was counting points on combs. I'm not sure what counts as a point. They vary so that is something you would have to determine when you look at them.
How much room do you have in each of your cages? Do you leave your breeders in there full time? The reason I ask is because I have a few breeds that I have maybe a trio but no more. I need to separate them this winter but hate to use up an entire run space for just a couple birds.
