I'm never going to remember all of that! Except the cayenne pepper- I read on the turkey page that they use it to prevent blackhead and feed it daily. I have the little plastic water containers right now, so the ACV is fine for now. But my turkey is drinking out of the galvanized water, so I guess I can't use it when they all get thrown in together later on. Ah well.

Loralee, Mother is that solid looking part of the vinegar that kind of settles to the bottom. You won't find that in pasturized vinegar. I remember the vinegar my mother had as a kid always had it.
I knew that cayenne helped chickens keep warm in winter. They do eat anything with hot peppers in it right up. It's like they don't taste the hot. I didn't know if turkeys were that way or not.
This all reminds me. I need some opinions. I got a couple big bags of Sevin at that auction a while back, thinking it was the powder but after I got it home I found out it was granules. The whole purpose of it was to use it in the chicken houses. NOw I'm afraid to use it at all because I was afraid the chickens might eat it. They are every smart about not eating on poisoness plants and stuff. Proof in my potted plants on the front porch. So do you guys think it would be safe to mix in with my litter this winter?
I got up late this morning and now I'm in a lousy mood. I hate wasting the day.
Also Loralee, you and I are cut out of the same mode. I used cloth diapers for all my kids. In fact they are like their Mom in that they were allergic to the artificial stuff. Mind were the old kind that you used diaper pins with. I would love to be able to find some of them in this day and time. They were the best cleaning rags you could find once the kids got potty trained. I don't think they even make plastic pants any more to put over them. The new cloth diapers are a whole 'nother thing. They were so much more natural and green than pampers or the like.
Breast feeding forms a bond between Mother and child that doesn't exist with a bottle. I know because I have some of both. Necessity to work outside the home was the deciding factor. Besides, babies get all those antibodies from the mother that otherwise they have to form on their own.
As far as location of everyone, Rittert lives more northwest near Manhattan. I kind of live a little more in the middle away from anyone. There's one from Admire which is out west and south of Topeka. A lot of the older members that used to post all the time have moved to different threads or forums. There for a while this was like World War III but it is just one big happy family of chicken lovers now.

Wow! Granulated Sevin. I don't know. I think I would be hesitant to use it, too.

I used cloth diapers, too. I miss not having them now for cleaning rags. I used mine all up. I didn't cover them with plastic pants. I used a thick wool cover thing that would let them breath but kept the moisture in They worked pretty good.

I am going to make some modifications to my chicken tractor. We are up on a hill, and the wind is terrible here. For some reason the wind whips all the feed out of the feeder in there, so I am going to put a solid enclosure under the housed portion of the tractor. It just has welded wire there now. We are going to go to St. Joseph today, so I'm going to pick up some PVC parts and make a PVC feeder that I can install on the outside of the tractor and have it go into the run under the covered and enclosed part. That should eliminate the feed blowing out, plus I won't have to take the feeder out every time I move the tractor to some new grass (or weeds, as the case may be.) I'm sure I won't get it all done today, but maybe I will on Monday, my day off.

Catch ya all later.

I'm talking about the sevin dust you put on tomato plants to keep the wevels and grasshoppers from eating them but I think the DE probably is the better (more natural) way to go. I read that if you mix some cayenne with your feed it will keep mice out because they do taste the hot, and when they get near the feed it burns their mouth and eyes. I also read where somebody mixes Peanut Butter and Quikcreat and rolls it into 1/4" balls then put some water nearby, for rat/mouse poison. I would use that in a place the birds couldn't get to it though. I think the pumpkin seeds DO work for worms as I've seen many people talk about worming with them. As for my location, I'm 20 minutes NW of manhattan, between manhattan and claycenter. I know admire might as well be a suburb of emporia if that easy for folks to understand. I love the farm store in Emporia but I only make it there once every few years. They carry alot of hard to find feeds like pre-mixed pigeon, and high protein Game Bird Starter.

Hi, I have not posted on this thread before, but thought I would drop in & let you all know I'm in the area also, I'm in Winfield. I'm originally from Wichita, I lived in Derby for 23 years before moving to Winfield 13 years ago. I just got back into chickens this year after taking a break for many years. My hens are not all laying yet, just one, hopefully the rest will join in soon.

Welcome Trish! You should join us. We are one big happy group. We love having new people and have just gotten several new ones in the last few days. It's so exciting when your birds start to lay. We'll all be here for you to share in your excitement when it happens.

My Rouen duck is worrying me now. Her mate just got over some sort of poisoning and now she's not laying. Its been three days. She's been regular as clockwork since August. I guess I'll have to try to get a hold of her when she goes in tonight and see if she's egg bound. Any suggestions for determining that?
