I agree. Hatching is a lot of work. Plus think about how much a baby sleeps. They have to get their rest. He should be ok. When are you going to post the pictures of your adults so we know what you have? I

Okay everyone - Vincent (formerly Belle) is headed north Tuesday, to spend his roosterly days with Chooks, from whence he came to start with.

Suggestions welcome on the best way to transport him. I have a large box that I believe he will have room to sit/stand in - thought I would put pine shavings in the bottom since he's used to them, and cut a few small holes around the top for air.

It's a two hour drive to Ottawa. I have a super crew with plenty of room in the back seat, and the truck bed is covered. Am I being ridiculous thinking the box needs to be in the cab instead of the truck bed? My mom thinks I'm being silly - I'm not sure about air flow back there with the cover down, and don't have any way to leave it partway open.

Food - water - necessary for 2-3 hour trip?

All ideas appreciated and considered. Renee - any preferences?

My experience on transporting birds. I would put him in the cab. The temp range in the back could be very hard on him as well as lack of fresh air. When I go to chicken events I always carry a bottle of water and something to put it in. When you get to Ottawa offer him a drink before he finishes the trip. I am sure he could make it the whole distance ok but why stress him more than the move already would? I certainly would need a drink in that length of time.

I NEED ADVICE! I have two ducks that hatched and r doing fine. I have another that is half hatched but there is blood coming out. Should I do anything or leave it alone? Is it going to bleed to death? Help!!!!!!

People in Dwight, Junction City, Manhattan, Wamego and my MIL in North Kansas City felt the EQ but I didn't feel a thing here in Riley. Canchaser-You COULD try helping it I wait until I think they are dying in the shell before I help at all. If you help any that arn't dying anyway you will do more harm than help but, on one like that I choose to take the risk. It's still not a really good chance it will live though.

How do I help it? I'm scared it will bleed more if I peel it. This is so stressful.

Did you try to assist it getting out of the shell? If so it wasn't ready yet. If it is still attempting to get out of the shell on it's own leave it alone. If it is bleeding out it's naval you can try some cornstarch or something to stop the bleeding. Once in a while you can stop it but most of the time they don't make it. I leave them alone as long as they are still viable.

Just read your last post. DO NOT pull that shell off if it is bleeding. All that blood supply runs in the inner part of the shell. Let it dry on its own.

You might try tweeking with the humidity in the future sometimes a humidity issue will cause sticky shells like you are experiencing now.
