Of course adding turkeys is a bit of a pipe dream for me. My entire family keeps telling me I've taken on too much and need to eliminate not add to. And with this surgery next week I am going to hear it a lot more. I love the birds and keep adding things. It's the offspring that make any money at all for me, so I thought turkeys might be a good venture.

Trish I know it wasn't funny but I was laughing out loud at my visual thinking of that rooster chasing and rolling the Yorkie. If you weren't concerned about your dog it would have been hilarious to watch.

I'm not eating Seymore, of course.. but what about Royal Palms? (turkeys) Are they nice for meat? Do they breed on their own?

Well, I ran into town and picked up the wire dog kennel for nearly half of what it'd cost to buy new. It's in great shape. Went to Lowes and got the wood I think I need for my nest box, so I'm well on my way, except now I'm tired and taking a break. The kids really wore me out! Oh, and then I was searching for a little pipe to run my wire cord thru from the pop door (out thru my siding so I can pull on it outside) and I ended up buying a piece that was too big around-- I just settled out of haste. Then I got to thinking about it and I saw a bushing that would have worked much better, and it was cheaper. I just wasn't thinking with the kids running around. So I could kick myself, and I need to return that piece and get the other. Darned kids, they can really wreck my thinking. But I'm not doing that today. Tomorrow, I guess.

Danz, we do have an orchlens, (how do you spell that?!) but I'm not sure where it is. I keep getting flyers for it. I'm thinking it's down in Clearwater. I'll keep an eye out for their dog panels. That is exactly what I was thinking were panels that I can set up and put together as I get more, or configure any which way I want. I'll be careful to lock my chickens up at night or put the hardware cloth over the lower portion.

Trish, did the opossum get in the pen during the day?? Or was this at night? I'm not going to have anyone out unprotected at night for sure! And as long as I don't have any other roosters, I can keep my breeders in the chicken coop I have now.

Except that I'm worried one of my little white silkies (or both!!) might be roosters! They are both growing big combs on them! Eeek! I'm thinking this is a baaaad sign! ha! But they are both so darned sweet and cute! I love their fluff! The big birds have already passed them up in size, even though my silkies were older than the chicks I bought.

Yes, royal palms breed on their own. They are pretty good to eat (not as HUGE breasted as the commercial whites) and not as big, but they are also nice family or farmyard birds. They can be nice pets, and I think are about the tames of all the turkeys, at least in my limited experience. They are so pretty, too, with their stark black and white. That is what I will be gettin if or when I get my new poultry barn. I'm going to be disciplined and not get them before that. When we had turkeys before they would always call the wild ones in, so we always had wild ones hanging around the yard. I loved that. We still have a lot of wild turkeys, but they just stay farther away now.

It's "Orscheln's."

I picked up one of my free range lavender ameraucana roosters. I have several running around. The poor thing is skin and bones! Evidently he is not going in where I have the feeder. I watched him, and the guineas chase him away from all the food. I'm going to put up another feeder and make sure he knows where it is. My other free range birds are all doing fine. I think this one just must be the timid one.

Hawkeye, Below is a list of where the Orschelyn's stores are, I go to the Ark City store of course since I'm closest to that one. It was afternoon during the summer when I went down to the dog run & saw that 'possum in there. It went out the back of the run & up the tree close by. I hate those creatures, ugh! I have never looked at the dog runs at Orschelyn's I got the last one I got from Craigslist. If you watch you can find them fairly decently priced, but you have to jump on it as soon as you see it because they don't last long on there. I found a single one that I'm going to use for my puppy for awhile on there & it fit in the spot I needed it for perfectly. I have used it for a temporary pen for my birds since it's up close to the house & there is a huge yard light out there.

The last sale I got in on at Orschelyn's the panels were over 20% off. They were like $51 for a 10X10 panel and $74 for one with a gate. so for about $225 you got all the panels and they come with the fittings you need already. I know when I bought some panels from an individual I had to go out and buy some fittings. The cost of those go up quickly.
I'm not using any chicken wire inside for my bigger birds like the turkeys or the guineas. But then again the dogs are here.
I went out and tried to cobble up another shelter today but I just wasn't in a mood to work. I got some old panels cut down but then got undecided about how I wanted to build the thing. So now I'm at a standstill. Had someone drop by and that shot the rest of my afternoon. I hate days when I don't accomplish anything at all especially when I am feeling under pressure to get things done.

I am reading away here, learning what I can. Right now the favorite pictures, we keep coming to Brahmas, Cochins, Orpingtons and Salmon Favorelles. Any of those that wouldn't go together or would be bad with kids?

Silkies are supposed to have a mulberry color. But in some of them it does look black.

Brahmas, are really nice birds, they are a big bird. Seen some of the biggest Orpingtons that I had ever seen and the fall show in Sedialia Mo. They are really easy birds, and really quite friendly.

Tarja, I have all of those except Orpingtons and if my daughter comes through with eggs next month I should have some of those later this spring. I love all of these types and they all get along quite well. I have sent my daughter hatching eggs so now she has the other breeds as well.
