tntblake - do you have any Amish communities close to you? If so, check with them. I'm on the Missouri side, but we found a family that processed our birds for $1.20 a piece. Of course, they won't have phones, but check in their bulk grocery store if they have one, they should be able to direct you.

For 2 1/2 months I lived almost 50 miles away from my birds and I would only see them once a week. I used a 5 gallon bucket with nipples on the bottom and 3 5 gallon buckets with holes in the side for their feed. Each feed bucket would hold 2 2# Folgers coffee plastic can. I had about 10 LF in each tractor. When I would go up to feed and check on them there was always food and water left. Below are some of my videos so you can see what I am talking about.

Hope this Helps

When we go on vacation, we set up big waterers and feeders, but we also have neighbors or other chicken friendly families check in on the flock. The checking in was just more to ease our human minds! But just in case something got knocked over, in the chicken run/coop, etc. I liked to know that someone would find it sooner rather than later to minimize any potential losses.

It looks like you are in Lawrence, I am sure there are members of the local chicken world that would help out. If not, Baldwin is not too far from Lawrence, I am happy to meet you and see if we can help.

When we go on vacation I try to leave the birds all with self feeders and waterers that will last several days. We have a neighbor that raises chickens, and he comes over and checks on them. This Dec. when we need to be gone we are going to have one of my co-workers come out and take care of them. There really won't be a lot to do, but I always like to have someone come check on things. My husband's livestock takes more care than my chickens. He takes care of the horses, the calf and the goats.

It's aways away, but we're planning on going on a cruise next fall for 2 wks & I will have to find someone to come out & care for my birds, cats, & dogs. I would really just like to find someone to come & house sit so they don't have to drive out here every day. I guess I'll have to start checking around & see who I can find to do it.

Thanks for the offer Sandy. If I can't find someone in Lawrence I will keep you in mind. I only have three girls and my only real worry is shutting them in at night. They do put themselves to bed but I like to close the door to keep out unwanted nightly wind and weather. We have two dogs as well and I don't have any problem finding someone to come take them out and what not, but many of my friends think I'm nuts for raising hens in my backyard. Such is life I guess.

The silkie flock is now in a dog cage in the yard. The wind blew off a panel on their pen. All of them are fine, but a bit wind blown. If anyone wants them, this is the last chance. No, I didn't get the camera working for pictures. I will be working to get them into the barn this afternoon and when they are in there, they will stay.

They are cute, sweet little birds. After I managed to get the dark frizzle out from under the sheep feeder, she just snuggled into my arms. cooing.

Oh, one of the hens is the same color as Hawkeye's new roo. Is that a splash?

I could drive a ways to meet someone if that would help.

I also have a new hatch of 5 mixed banties. 3 yellow and 2 dark. They will be a mix of japanese, cochin, banty EE. They always stay small like the japanese and usually tend to have shorter legs. Feathering usually tends toward the cochin. Really cute and really super broodies. Same deal, up for grabs until I get them settled into a good pen with the hen. I will be checking the eggs that are still there to see if there will be more to hatch, but I think this will be all.

LN2008 - I live in the country and many think we are nuts for having chickens. However, I just keep talking "chicken".

I understand about shutting the girls up at night - we have talked about investing in an automatic door, but haven't yet. It's just easier, and less expensive, to find someone to lock them up and let them out when we are gone. Maybe someone should start a "chicken sitting" service??? HAHA - I think I read an article last spring about some ladies on the west coast that have a business!
