Consolidated Kansas

Loralee, I bought 10 dog crates that are new (customer returns) from a crate manufacturing company who has offices in Ottawa. I have 5 different sizes, two of each. I've used several of them for chickens. I have some of the three larger sizes I haven't used, and would sell you one for $40. I got into this deal hoping to sell them at swap meets, but always ran out of room by the time I got birds loaded. And then I lost the guys' number who was my contact to buy more. I have them in my storage right now so can't tell you exact sizes of what I have left. I have found no damage on any I have opened. They are in manufacturers boxes. I am thinking the brand is Kennelaire or something like that. Some of these retailed for over $100 each.
If you think you are interested I could go look tomorrow and see what sizes I have. They are so handy for chickens and other birds. I was keeping these roosters with colds in one of them here in the house.

Thank you Danz! If I don't hear back from this guy, I may take you up on that!

He wrote me last night that he still had it, and I wrote him back to be sure of the dimensions-- just making sure it isn't teeny tiny, and he hasn't written back yet. He is down the road from me, so if it's a good size, I'm hoping to get that one. Wish people would just put their numbers down so all this back and forth waiting on emails could be cut out.

How far a drive are you from Wichita?

Checoukan, I'll try to get a good picture of her beak today. Trying to think how to do that..perhaps standing her on the floor and then getting down low and getting a good shot of it. It's the upper beak-- the tip is broke, but not all the way thru. The crack goes up both sides (on both sides of the beak) and it's still attached at the top of the beak. I'm hoping it might heal and become solid on it's own again???? I'll work on a picture...

I had one with a beak like that, and it will grow out again, but it's like a fingernail, so if you want her to use what's there in the meantime, you can superglue it down. Superglue was originally invented as a medical glue, so it's not as bad as it sounds. You can get the kind with a paintbrush in the fake nail section of the pharmacy or superstore, and there are other kinds of applicators for whatever sounds easiest for you. This holds very well and strengthens it while it grows out again. Think of it as being unstable and moveable - the glue keeps it from moving and hurting each time she uses it.

With regard to the brain injury, it's quite probable, and giving her vitamin E (after you glue the beak, because E is oil-based and will keep the glue from adhering properly) will assist in her healing if you add it to her food.

Good luck!

metal or plastic? I know this guy has plastic ones and he may have metal one. This address is approximate 23775 Kansas 16, Kansas, United States, using google maps should get you an idea where he is. I have only driven by, I don't know the guy.

Good advise Renee. Can't push enough of that Vitamin E when it comes to chicken brains.
Hawkeye I think it is maybe an hour and a half to two hours to get here. If you didn't buy the Giant one (I think it is 48" long) I could sell one of the others for $35. Sure wish I'd known you needed one when Seramaslovers was up here. If you aren't in a huge hurry Maybe someone would be driving through either way and could transport it. I'd offer to bring it down but I'm not up to road trips right now. Naturally if you can find one closer it is going to be more economical and handier for you. I see them on Craigslist all the time but people always want a fortune for them. I really hope it works out for you with the guy that is close.
I've got another busy day ahead today. I hope we can get the new guinea shed moved in and get the other one moved to the pheasants. I seriously need to do some cleaning but it is close to impossible with DH off today. That little bit of sunshine yesterday made me feel so much better. Maybe I'll even think about putting up a decoration or two today. I'm not ready to chase the cats out of the Christmas tree yet though.
BTW any of you that have ever had house cats near Christmas, this is an adorable video and fits so well.
In fact all of his videos crack me up.

Thanks Danz! I haven't heard back from that guy, so I'm seriously considering driving up there! I'll give it today to see if he replies, and then I'll get with you!

Okay, I got some pictures of her beak. It was like pulling hair. Geesh. Trying to get close-up pictures is NOT easy on a moving bird in bad lighting. But this is what I'm dealing with! (I'm going to hunt down the Vit E asap! thanks!)

Hawkeye-Is the beak broke through far enough that it is moving? If so, I would definitely super glue it. If it is not moving (you know... you can wiggle or move the end of it) then you could get by without super glue, but frankly, even then the super glue wouldn't hurt.. unless you are really messy and glue her beak shut.

Just kidding... I know you are a super neat person.

I've used super glue on my own wounds, such as cuts or splits on fingers. It INSTANTLY takes the pain away and works WAY better than that NuSkin stuff, which BTW STINGS like the DEVIL!

'Gmorning' everyone!

I see, it's not flipped back, but rather forward. I expect it will grow out underneath her current hard beak, like a fingernail when you bash it. She should be okay.

I would spray or use the gel Vetericyn on it daily to make sure it doesn't get any bacterial or fungal infection until it looks clear and clean.

I use the antibiotic spray on wounds like the head to keep them clear without having to touch the damaged flesh. You can also make your own using betadine in a spray bottle mixed with water to look like dark tea. You can pull her top hat into a small rubber band to hold the area closer together and keep it semi-covered, too. She'll hate you for it, but get used to it.

Hey DANZ- There's a guy on Craigslist selling an incubator for $50. It is 41" high and is all stainless steel. It is a medical incubator. I would buy it, but it is a CO2 incubator, which means it uses anearobic conditions. I'm not sure if it could be converted to an aerobic and ventilated incubator, but if you think it could it would sure be worth the money. It is made by Precision Scientific and they cost several thousand dollars new. I'm sure this one is probably an old model, but if it can be done, it might be worth it. I just don't want to make a trip to Topeka if I can't use the thing.

I just don't know if it could be functional as a ventilated model.

hey Ivy, don't you think you should be in bed? Oh, but I guess you are off tonight. Where you wanting a couple of rosecomb pullets? I could make you a DEAL. HEHE
big_smile.png
But it is going to cost you. Big time!
