Consolidated Kansas

Hey Danz, when do you put your serama eggs into lockdown? I understand sometimes they hatch early.

I just candled the eggs in the 'bater. Out of about 2 dozen I had 6 that didn't start developing. I'm not surprised since all of these eggs were from young pullets that just started laying and all most all of them had been layed on the floor of their pens and some were pretty darn dirty. I pulled out 3 BC Marans, 2 ameraucana and 1 rosecomb. I need to fix up a better way to candle, or else buy a nice egg candler. Those marans eggs are so dark they are really hard to candle. Unfortunately one of my DARKEST marans eggs was one of the ones that wasn't fertile. Guess I better get the a brooder ready. I think some of mine could start hatching in a few days. I wish I knew when my broody little hen started. She was hiding back there and I didn't realize she was sitting on a clutch of eggs. It could be that hers start to hatch soon or it might be a week or two. I just don't know. I hate to disturb her much in the meantime.

Welcome Tweety! Please post pics of the greenhouse coop as you go along! We just got home from picking up Jojo (our new cockatiel)! We are in love already. He is such a great little guy! He is full of personality! Here are a few pics of our new baby!
What are you looking at?

I said what are you looking at??

He loves to nibble on my ring!

Oh, Love the cockatiel! Such a cute bird. I had a sun conure for several years. Beautiful bird, but she was a real pain. I couldn't talk on the phone without her making an irritating screach.

She was supposed to be my bird, but she HATED me.

She liked men. She was good with my husband and would give him kisses. She would bite a chunk out of me (and did!) rather than kiss me.
Here's Jingles. We finally rehomed her.

We also have a double yellow headed parrot. His name is Johnny. Johnny talks, whistles, sings and keeps us entertained and laughing. He is such a goofball. My husband loves this bird to pieces and spends a lot of time with him.

Johnny likes being with my DH, but he likes talking to me more. It is so funny. He calls me "Saw Saw" instead of Susie, and we won't say what he calls my DH because it wouldn't print on this website, anyway! That's a long, funny story.

HEEEEEEERRRRRRE'S JOHNNY! (For you old Johnny Carson fans!)

Oh, and we have recently taught him to wave "Bye-Bye" with his foot. It's really cute. He waves good bye and says, "BYE BYE" and then makes a kissing noise like he is kissing us goodbye. Also, when DH and I give each other a hug he makes his kissing noise. Gee. Wonder how he learned that!

Your conure was beautiful! I thought about a conure but everything I read said that they like to screech a lot and I don't want to hear that all day long. I love Johnny!! I love the bigger parrots but I wanted to start with an easier/smaller bird until my kids are older before we get a big one. Is Johnny loud? Does he screech or scream?

Ivy I leave my Serama eggs in the incubator for 17 days. Most hatch at 19 days but some take the full 21. I found the longer I let them turn the better they hatch.
We had cockatiels for years. We even raised some babies. If you breed them however they don't make good pets. To get them to talk, the best way is to determine what time of day they are the noisiest. They will have a couple of certain times during the day when they make the most noise. Make a recording on a continuous tape or repeat yourself over ans over without changing the tone of your voice. Say hello over and over for at least 15 minutes. That is why getting a continuous tape is the easiest way. Play that recording during their noisy times. Within just a matter of days they will start picking it up. After they learn hello you can introduce other words to them by repeating them the same way. You can also visually stimulate them by showing them something and they will react with the words that you taught them to say in response. Or with a particular sound. i.e. a telephone ring and saying "hello!"

Ivy, that darn Jingles, she was a mess. Screeching, and then sticking her head up into those bells and ringing them. My God she was so annoying, but I do believe she was one of the purdiest birds I ever did see. Has Johnny ever said 'Coyote" yet?

Danz-I'll probably leave the serama eggs in there for a couple more days.

TNT-Johnny CAN be loud, but he is really, really good about it. My DH and I work a lot of night hours, so we sleep during the day. The whole time we are sleeping Johnny is TOTALLY quiet (thank goodness!) Once we wake up and he hears us talking he will start to talk. Generally it is not too loud, but he can get loud. He gets loud in reaction to us being loud. If we holler at him from the other room or something he hollers back. He is a really cool bird.
He can whistle several tunes.
He sings, 'You Are My Sunshine" sometimes a little off-key.
He has a pretty big vocabulary.
He likes to call the dogs in the house and tell them when to go out.
He immitates a squeaky door so well it's hard to tell if it's him or the door squeaking.
He answers the telephone with "Hello" before we can say hello (Just ask Checoukan about that one!)
He laughs and laughs and laughs like a little old lady and has some Gospel sounding song that he sings that we do not recognize.
After I take a drink of my diet coke he "burps" for me. (Gee... I wonder where he learned that one!)

He immitates my husband snoring.
He tells us when he wants out and puts himself to bed at night.
He eats just about anything we do...pizza, pasta, ice cream, toast, peanut butter, veggies, etc. He feels really left out if we are eating and he doesn't get any.
He brings a lot of laughter into the house and we just love it.

And no, Checoukan, he hasn't learned coyote yet. Perhaps if Buddy and Runt didn't do such a good job of keeping the coyotes away he would learn that quicker.

Well, I had a gruesome discovery a little while ago. I was out doing chores and DH walked up to me with one of my good leghorn hens. She was dead. He heard the electric fence "snapping" so he went to check it out. She was laying up against the fence wire and also stuck in the woven wire fence. It had to have happened today, probably this morning. I don't know if one of the roosters was chasing her and she got stuck in the fence, or if she accidently hit the electric wire and freaked and got stuck in the woven wire. Either way it would not have been a nice way to go....being shocked to death or stuck and strangled in the wire.

I didn't get to ready everything since my last post but Ivy- thats great to hear that not ALL incadesants are going to be unavailable and also I found out that thet heat bulds most of us use aren't considered incadesant anyway.

YAY!!!!!

This is the FIRST night that all of my birds put themselves to bed and I didn't have to crawl under the coop!!!

No poopy knees or hands! Woot!

TNT, congrats on finally bringing home Jojo! I bet that was pretty exciting to get him home! Cute he likes your ring... but be careful!! My turkey ATE a huge rhinestone that dropped on the ground this summer and I had a heart attack worried about whether it would pass or get stuck in her. I never saw it again, so I think it must be in her gizzard or whatever grinding up her food. Sigh. He is a very pretty bird!

Ivy, that is so funny your parrot burps after you take a drink of soda!! OMGosh, I died laughing! My uncle (that I just visited) taught all of us kids to say "BEER" after we took a sip of soda. He thought it was hilarious... but probably not so funny when we did it down at the cafe and we were yelling out BEER after each sip of soda. hehe!! Sometimes I'll say it around my mom when we're eating out, just so I can get a rise out of her and a good laugh about her brother teaching us that.

Your parrot is really pretty too! That sun conure was gorgeous! But I don't think I could have handled the biting either. Good luck on your eggs/babies!! I CAN. NOT. WAIT. UNTIL. MY SILKIES. LAY!!!!!!!!!!! I keep looking at my incubator in excitement and feel the thrill of the potential! I should probably set it up and see how it runs and what it's doing now before I get any eggs. That way I know what I'm doing. Although, from what everyone says about this particular incubator, you just turn it on, put in the eggs and leave it alone.

Danz, yeah, it didn't really feel like xmas either. I did enjoy our Xmas Eve service-- my oldest sang in the children's choir and we had our contemporary pastor give the sermon for the 7pm service (the traditional pastor gave the midnight service). So that night rocked! He had us all riled up and ready to praise. But the weeks leading up and the days following... just felt "off". And of course, I've been fighting that bit of depression with the dark days and the Boeing thing before hand. So funny that you said you were a beotch today-- I've probably not been at my sweetest here lately either! LOL I've been trying to make an effort to be extra kind and patient because I know that I'm close to crazy. hehee!! Eh... but I'm alright, really.
