Consolidated Kansas

I washed the syringe and sure enough there was a plug of some kind in it. I think DH got some in under her skin but she hasn't started acting any better yet. I took her her antibiotic pill she was taking before just in case and got her to drink a little milk replacement but not much. I have no patience when it comes to my family or my pets. I want them to be OK right now.
At least I feel confidant that I can give her a shot tomorrow that will help if this doesn't. I may have to get another dose tomorrow if she didn't get enough of this first one.
The pups seem well though so that is what counts right now. If Marshmallow can get on her feet all will be fine.
Yep I am totally exhausted. I normally am Up all the time but it seems that sometimes it all piles sup on me. It's always when DH is working nights too so I have to take care of everything alone. He just called and said the plant had tripped. That means he is going to have a busy night and be one grouchy person tomorrow. He has been cheated on sleep as well.
On the bright side, my mama Pheonix and her 5 chicks are doing great so far. I also hatched a handful of eggs today that I found in the barn. Got a little of everything in that bunch. So there's lots of peeping going on.
Friday the 13th will be over in a few hours! Thank God!

Thanks for the warm welcome. Sounds like I missed a lot of drama today but I hope the mama and pups turn out just fine. I found out last night that I will be getting my eggs at the end of next week. I need to figure out quickly if I should bother spending money on a turner, making a turner or doing without. I will not be home most of the day but I can turn in the morning and several times in the evening. Any thoughts? Again, hope the dogs do well through the night, hopefully it will start to warm up again soon.

OMGosh Danz, I think you've had enough! You poor thing! I will be praying hard for you and Renee-- you for Marshmallow and her pups and Renee's birds. What a week!!!! I'd probably go ahead and get another syringe full of antibiotics, personally. Honestly, it's not going to hurt her, and I doubt she got enough to help for tonight. So, yeah, call the vet tomorrow and get another one. What a PITA that the syringe did that!? That is so bizarre!! I've never had that happen, and I have been giving shots to my horses for years and years. The only thing that I've had happen is that penicillian needs BIG needles and if the needle isn't big enough, it won't go it, it's too thick. All of my horse shots go into the muscle. I insert until I feel a good muscle and then draw back making sure I didn't hit a vein and then plunge. I'm fast at it, too. Even with the fur on my horses, I use alcohol and swab their neck and sort of push the fur to one side so I can get a clear shot of their skin. I wonder if you went thru a patch of thick fur or dirt on the skin that plugged it? Next time, try to really dig down to the skin and push the fur apart for tomorrow. Were you just doing sub c or muscle? If you're doing sub c, I like to lift the skin up and off the body and inject. But it sounds like really, it was just a fluke tonight. I'm sure you know what you're doing.

Ivy-- now I'm nervous about my silkies laying! I need to get a box in there with them. They are 7 or 8 months old now (I need to double check their dates, it got away from me, I found their brithdate just yesterday but didn't bother counting it up) The hens are doing a lot of squatting and sitting lately, I noticed. I checked on them several times today because they seemed to be just sitting in there instead of kicking and scratching around like usual... does that mean they are close? I think they are feeling fine???

Rittert, I guess you'll be changing your siggy soon!!! No more wishing to be a chicken/game parent. :)

Hello to everyone else! I hope you all are doing great! I had to crawl under the coop for my two silly white silkies who like to make me crawl after them. The thing is, when they see me coming, they stand up and talk to me and wait for me to get them. I wish I could get them to COME. I tried! I talked to them and urged them to come out. Nope. Sigh. I'm re thinking how high my coop is. I'm going to build the next one just a couple inches higher. ha!

We have some expert hatcher's here who have worked with a lot of different incubators. What kind/brand of incubator do you have? That may depend on if you should get a turner or not. I have a Brinsea and I've read up and so many people say you can get by without the turner because it holds it's temps well and recovers fast after lifting the lid. Other incubators may not fare so well... so that may help you figure it out. The other gals could tell you about quirks the other kinds of machines have. VERY exciting that you are getting your eggs soon! What breeds are you getting? I hope you have good luck with them! Are they local eggs or being shipped in? There are whole topics on shipped eggs-- lots of tips for them. But if you have local fresh eggs, you'll be in much better shape for a better hatch rate.

Wow it sounds like every one has had alot going on! Danz- I'm keeping you and your dogs in my thoughts I hope mom and the remaining pup start doing better and give you a bit of a break.
Chooks- I hope those birds make it to you alive and soon.
Hawkeye- Congrats on semores first egg, and.... You're 100% correct.
Everyone this evening I went and bought a trio oegbs and after this post I'm going to change my signature. They aren't the colors that I went after but they are nice looking birds and the colors I got should produce very marketable hatching eggs and chicks. I got them at a pretty reasonable price so I might make just a little money when I resell them for the colors I want in a few months. We did have to treat them for leg mites before I left, we dipped their legs in oil and he stripped the outside layer off the roos spurs, I will keep an eye on them the next couple days and make sure they clear up. I got a Beautiful 2yo Red millie rooster, a 1yo Dark millie hen, and a 1yo Spangled hen. I will try to post pics tomorrow night.

Hi Hawkeye-I'd be willing to bet the plug in the syringe was floating in the medicine. When they drew it up they evidently used a larger needle which actually took a chunk out the bottle stopper and went into the medicine. That is why it was okay until she started to inject.

Your silkies sound normal. Getting a box in there might actually encourage them to lay.

DH just spent some time working on my hatcher. He installed a reostat (sp?) so we could adjust it down. It had a huge fan in there that was like a hurricane. Way too much air movement and noisy. Now it is just right!

Hawkeye, what was it you said you didn't like about the Home page on here? What I don't like is that your messages & all the stuff you posted recently are right on the page. I wish they would have it so you could choose what you wanted to show on there in your preferences. I don't like all my stuff right there on the Home page. I know they were trying to make it easy for people, but that's a little too easy I think.

We all need to do a group hug for Danz, I think you need it tonight.

When I went over to my next door neighbor's house this evening I found out that both the EE rooster & the hen he got from me died. He said the little roo just keeled over one day. He was doing great when I took him there, I can't imagine what happened, he is the one I raised from a chick. The hen got eaten by a coyote, now I feel bad about sending her over there,

They finally got a little coop for their chickens though & are putting them in at night, I thought they would never learn. There are just too many coyotes running around at their place for any chickens to live very long. I don't know how secure the coop is, but at least they're in somewhere at night now, they only have 7 chickens left now out of probably two or three times that. Of course when you leave them out 24/7 you're just offering them up to whatever wants a chicken dinner.
