Consolidated Kansas

These guys are so cute. I just checked them cause Marshmallow went to pee. There are 5 girls and 2 boys left. Three of the ones that died were boys and one girl. Actually the girls are easier to sell most of the time so I'm not too disappointed.

Congrats Hawkeye! This is what you've been waiting for! Yahoo!

My partridge silkie had brown eggs, and my black has a light beige egg, so I guess they can be any color.
Let the egg warm. It may still be good if it hasn't frozen. Of course pullet eggs sometimes aren't viable to begin with. Make sure your incubator temp is stable for at least 2 hours, and give it a try. It won't hurt to try.

Danz, that's a shame Marshmallow is having such a hard time, I sure hope this medicine gets her feeling better. I know you're very worried about her, keep us up on how she is doing. Those puppies are such cuties though, is there anything cuter than a little puppy?

IVY, well I wouldn't take just one opinion for gospel, I would get another one at least for sure. That doesn't sound right, but then again you haven't gotten all the results yet. Yeah, I think it may have been the angle or something the other pics were taken of Blackie or maybe he was just holding his tail funny at the time. He is a pretty guy I think, I can't wait for his beard to get all grown back in. He & the two Lavender girls seem to get along fine, but he has made them a little more leery of me than they had been just because he's not used to me yet. It may be awhile before they start laying again after the move & this weather change. They don't have a cozy coop to stay in, so it's harder on them. They all cuddle back in the back of the igloo at night. They do have a roost in the pen, but it's too cold right now for them to use it.

Hawkeye, I was looking at that pic of the free cage I got & wondering if maybe I could just get a frame kit for that like I did for the other one with a tray & then the frame legs would sit in the place where the cage sits now. The only thing with that I can see is that the tray would be sitting on top of the other frame because there is a lip there where the cage sits down in there. I don't know if that would interfere or if the legs would hold it up high enough to clear it. I guess I'll just have to measure when I get a chance & see if it would work. I sure would like to have a little better setup on that, it's kind of messy the way it is. Rabbits have little poop balls that roll, so they bounce off sometimes & hit the floor instead of where they're supposed to go. I was asking about the wood on your coop because there is a guy in Ark City selling some scraps of OSB & I was wondering if maybe I could use some of it for my coop if he doesn't want too much for it. I was checking with him about some sheetrock scraps too because we were needing just a couple scraps to fix somethings in the house. I would have to see how big his OSB scraps are before I decided if I wanted any & how much he wanted for them.Oh & thanks on the Lavender hens, those two are from IVY. I just didn't end up getting the rooster from her because we couldn't figure out a way to get him down here to me, so an opportunity came up to get this guy from a gal in Wichita & I grabbed it. It's kind of rare to actually find true Ameraucanas in this area, usually they end up being EEs. Which there is nothing really wrong with EEs, I have one left myself & she lays a pretty blue-green egg for me, but when you're wanting to breed them I just wanted to have the real thing.

Darn, it's still cold today, I was hoping it would warm up a little at least. It was still 28 when I went out awhile ago to let my chickens out & feed the pups & let them out. My chickens still came running out like it was a spring day, silly chickens. They can't wait to get out each day, no matter how cold & nasty it is. The only time I have seen them really want back in is that first nasty storm we had at the beginning of cold weather when it blew so hard & the temp dropped so fast. Other than that they want to go out & range all day. They run up to me when I go out at 4:30 to give them their snack & it doesn't take all that much usually to get them to follow me into the run since I'm holding a can of BOSS, their favorite bedtime snack. Hawkeye, that's good that your chickens are learning to go in, I'll bet it's a big relief to you. You can train chickens pretty easily really, they're very food motivated. Well I have to go get my car this afternoon, they didn't have it done yesterday, it had better look like new after two days! We had them detail the outside since we had scratches & things that we wanted buffed out & it needed a wax bad. Since we live on a gravel road it doesn't do a lot of good to wash it, but we did want to get it looking it's best before we get it appraised for a trade-in. You want to get the most you can anyway. I hope it does warm up a little today because I'm going to pick up another rabbit hutch this afternoon in Ark City too, pray for warmth!

Morning everyone. Danz, go glad that marshmallow is doing better and the pups are beautiful. Also, wanted to be sure that everyone reads the post on the information page about the SOPA & PIPA legislation and to contact your senators and reps if you are so inclined. Stay warm everyone.

Do you have a link to the information?

Thanks Trish! Yeah, I think you might be able to get that frame kit to fit into that wood set..? Could you move the cage out and try out the other cage in it and see if it might work? That would be nice if the OSB is in nice big pieces. Check to make sure that it hasn't been out in the weather though. I ruined some of mine and it warped. And just an FYI-- it will NOT screw in flat when it's warped. :( I tired. I had it on the roof on the side and I ended up having to rip it back out and replace it. I figured it would lay flat with enough screws in it. So don't buy anything that has water leached into it and is warped. Not worth your money since you can't really use it. I hope your car turns out gorgeous! Good luck with it! I agree, this was a smart move on your part to spiff it up before trading it or selling it. :)

Danz, the egg is sitting on my counter... but I have a bad feeling about it. There water was frozen solid in my garage over night!! So I'm thinking this egg probably froze before I found it. I'm just going to eat it and forget it. Looks like I'm at the start of having many more eggs to go! I asked on the Silkie thread and from my picture, Sonoran said that it is NOT a pullet egg- it's a normal sized egg. So if she continues to have these, they should be fine to incubate!! Yay! I sure hope Zorro has been doing his job out there! I have looked them over and they don't look like he has been breeding them at all. I was going to buy them aprons, but they seem fine. Either he's not doing anything or maybe he's just really gentle? I guess when I crack it open, I'll look for a bullseye. I sure hope i see one!!!

Chickmama-- I'll try to check out whatever you are talking about. Since that might be a while yet-- can you give a quick over view of what it's about????

It is bitter out there today. I am totally procrastinating getting out to feed and water. In fact I haven't done a thing yet today.
This weather just knocks me out of it. At least the sun is shining through the windows. I just watched a video that made me feel ill.
I think this should stand as a reminder that keeping chickens and not depending on store eggs is not only better for us; but also, if we all raise our own we could eliminate that inhumane treatment.

I saw the information this morning on the BYC Homepage, there's a big STOP sign and then a note about it. Just go to the BYC Home page.
