Consolidated Kansas

I finally got back from town. I am beat as usual. It sure seems like it was a lot colder today than the thermometer said. I got a year's worth of hair cut off. It is always such a shock when I get a haircut but it was sure getting shaggy. My hair grows slower than anyone I know. It's thin and fine to boot. I should probably accept that I'm not young and wear it short but that has never been my style. It has always been so naturally curly that I look like a wild woman with short hair.
I came home to an incubator full of chicks. There's a little of everything in there I think. Now my bin is crowded. I guess tomorrow I need to go do some more moving and rearranging in the brooder house so I can get some of these varments out of here. I guess I should do some advertising on our new swap page and see what I can move.

So I was watching my OEs today and I'm starting to learn more about their personalities and pecking order. I was wondering about the younger hen she yonned consantly and would shake her head and/ scratch at her ear between yons this went on for about 2 or 3 minutes. She's a really healthy looking bird and the only one that wasn't ever effected by leg mites. Are her ears just draining or what is going on? I was using clorox water to disinfect an old brooder in the building the stay the nights in. It was aired out pretty well when I put them back in. I was wondering if that might have irritated their respritory systems?

From what I've learned-- yawning is most likely a sign/symptom of congestion. Which means she might have an upper respiratory infection of some kind. The head shaking and ear scratching could be mites. BUT since she's also yawning AND scratching-- it's likely an congestion with infection. When I went to the vet with my birds, that is what my vet told me. You already know you have mites, but the head shaking and yawning are a serious symptom. I nearly lost my birds. I'd keep a really close eye on her. Pick her up and listen to her chest when she is breathing.

I love getting a hair cut! Mine grows pretty slowly, too compared to people I know. My hair is also very fine and not nearly as thick as I'd like it. It's just naturally always been that way. And straight as a board. You're lucky you have curl! At least you can straighten it out if you want and still have some body. ;)

You should definitely post your chicks and see what you can sell! That would be great if you got a following. :)

I'm reposting this so maybe more people will see it: Candace is trying to make a map of where everybody is on Google, so if everyone would go to the Kansas Poultry Swap on Facebook & under her post add your location & what name you want there then she can add you. That way we can see where everybody is around the state, there will be little markers where we all are. If you're not comfortable putting your real name you can use your BYC name or some are just using first names. We just hit 100 members everybody,

I wouldn't have thought we would get so many members in such a short time. It has slowed down today with requests for more new members, but I have added a few & I know Tonya has too. I think the site is a wonderful idea, Thanks Tonya! She asked me why nobody had thought of it before & I don't know why it didn't occur to me because I'm on several swap sites of various types, I just didn't think of one for poultry.

Danz, it sounds like you might be the first one posting chicks for sale on the new site, yay! What all will you have available? I still don't have any eggs from my Ameraucanas,

. They're holding out on me, darn.

Well I got another rabbit cage by UPS today, so I need to go put it together. I'm trying to get my bucks separated from the does so I don't end up with babies when I'm not prepared for them. None of my does are old enough yet to be having kits, so I don't want any surprises. I'll see you all later.

The birds should be mite free as they've been dusted for mites and lice once a week for 2 weeks now and had their legs dipped in veggie oil every other day they do still have some scales left on the top of their feet but that will take a while to go away. I'm thinking she's probably go so congestion because I've been cleaning and sweeping in that building during the day while they're out side in a run (so it's pretty dusty) and the clorox fumes probably didn't help. How would I treat her for these things and a cold? The other 2 aren't showing any of the same symtoms, should they be treated too?

I honestly don't know what all I will have. I know I still need to move a bunch of young Seramas. I've hatched out a bunch of "secret yard nest eggs" I found and they look like a mix of heaven knows what. Most of the chicks I can normally tell at least what one of the parents if not both are, but some of these leave big question marks. I have found though that some of my mixed birds produce the best eggs and are very pretty.
I put a notice on our country swap site today if people were looking for or had birds to sell to come visit the swap site and join. Don't know if there were any takers or not. Locally they just started allowing poultry in the city limits. I figured with it just beginning, that there would be people wanting to get started this spring.
I hope to capitalize on that market later if I can.

I gotta get up out of this chair or I'm not going to get anything done! I was hoping my Ameraucanas would start laying again for me so I can start incubating some eggs from them, but they haven't yet. I have 2 brand new incubators to play with, so I would love to try them out. It will be interesting to see which one I like the best. I don't plan to hatch anything like the numbers of eggs you hatch Danz. I don't have the facilities to keep that kind of numbers of birds here, even for a short time. My rabbits are presently taking up some space in the garage until I can move them outside in warmer weather and my son has yet to get his junk out of my garage. I told him he has 2 months to get it all out of there because I need the space for my chicks & rabbits. I have had it all in there for over 4 years, so I think it's high time he takes it to his own place & stores it or whatever he is going to do with it. I kind of figure if he hasn't needed it all this time he probably doesn't need most of it now, but that's up to him to decide. I just want it out of my garage so I can put what I want in there.

Well I'm really getting up this time, see you all later. Send all your chicken friends to our Poultry Swap site, I figure the more the merrier, that way we will have more resources to pull from for finding birds.

Mom?.... lol just kidding, that dose sound like the way I have alot of crap stored though. The (mostly) Ameraucana crosses at the farm where I'm keeping my birds have been laying up a storm and we've been getting atleast 5 eggs a day from 10 or 12 hens.

Rittert3, you may just want to track down that ivermectin. I know you said you were doing all the other things, but if you haven't ever dealt with mites in the ears, that is THE WORST and is really horrible to imagine...but it happens. They come flooding out when you use the ivermectin, because it treats parasites in the bird's whole body, so the mites and lice have to jump ship immediately. Ask me about them flowing out of the ear like a river...it's awful.

Just buy some and treat them...then you'll know they are free of the parasites.

I'm going to be clenching my buttocks for at least an hour remembering that...those were the symptoms. ACK!
