Consolidated Kansas

Tweety- Those chicks look very tame and sweet, I bet they will grow up to be big, pesky love bugs!

Our day started out rough today. The mail lady stopped by at 10 with a package that was my new used saddle for my walking horse mare and I unpacked it and hung it on the porch railing. DH came downstairs and I said "Oh, come out and see the saddle, it just came in the mail." He said he wanted to get a cup of coffee first and I said just come out real quick and look at it and then grab a cup of coffee. Well, thank heavens we went out to look at the saddle. We were looking at it on the railing and I heard the geese start carrying on in the back pasture so I looked up a coyote was jumping around on top of my gander!!!! So I start screaming and run down the stairs, grab a shovel, kick my slippers off and start running as fast as my legs can carry me through the wet muck with DH in hot pursuit. So I am yelling at the top of my lungs which scares the coyote who grabs the gander by the neck and starts dragging him up the hill. Fortunately he got to the back fence line and couldn't get through the fence with the gander in his mouth so he panicked and dropped him and poor Sebastian comes running as fast as his big orange feet could carry him right into my arms. DH scared the coyote away who was still trying to decide if he should come back after his goose dinner.

Poor boy had a punctured air sac so we called all around looking for a vet that would see him and Town and Country Animal Hospital in Louisburg (who is our horses veterinarian) said they could see him so we packed him and Sybil his goose up in the back of the jeep and he got some sutures and pain meds and antibiotics and is home recovering. They took wonderful care of him at Town and Country and I am so glad he is going to be ok. Guess we are in the market for a gun now and this coyote better not come back. The geese are in a pen with electric fence but I let them free range when we are home but I don't let them out til mid morning to avoid any nocturnal predators that might be winding down for the day.

If anyone has info on livestock guardian dogs we are thinking that might not be a bad idea. We have talked about using portable electric pens to free range the birds but I am worried that may not be practical and a dog might be a better investment.

A big, big thank you to Renee for getting back to us so quick because I knew she had a great chicken vet in Lawrence but couldn't remember their name.

Coyote, not cool. FYI, I am a hunter, have gun, will travel.

HaHa!

6 year old Kale reached down to pet one of my orps and of course she immediately squatted.

4 year old Kace was so excited: "Look Nana she's practicing!"

Cute!! Oh and yeah, yesterday double and triple postings were ALL over the board! I noticed everyone was complaining.

Sorry! At least he is good looking!

So can any kids join 4-H or is it only for the country kids? My boy would probably like to join.

EVERYone can join 4-H! You don't have to be a country kid! In fact, most of the projects are perfect for townies! They have rocketry, foods, fashion, photography, art, on and on!!! Of course if you have meat goats, chickens, horses, etc.... that is pretty popular, too.

Good morning, Kansas peeps! Hope you are all well!

Does anyone personally know member Kansas Gal (LaNeta Locke)? She ordered hatching eggs from me and I'm trying to reach her - she is not answering her PMs.

Anyone that knows her - please PM me, but do tell her that if she's changed her mind, NO WORRIES! But, I would appreciate it if she'd let me know. Many thanks!!

I've never seen her on this thread! Usually the Kansas peeps do make it over here. Sorry you can't get a hold of her, that is frustrating to not know either way.

I think my egg in the incubator died while I was gone. My DH did not turn the incubator. OF COURSE. I don't know if that's why it died or not. I DID find out that my son admitted to trying to candle it when I wasn't looking for his friends!!!! I about killed him! I told him to never touch the eggs in the incubator. But I don't know if that was it, either. Because there are no cracks and he said he didn't drop it. But he could have shaken it and not realized that was a bad thing. Especially if he let one of his friends hold it and they shook it. ARGH!!! Anyway, I'm pretty sure it's dead, but I'm going to leave it in for a couple more days to be sure. It grew the big black eye ball and the veins and the squiggly body, but then it hasn't gotten any bigger since I got home. So then for comparison, I candled the egg that my broody is sitting on-- and that egg is half way full of chick!! I can barely see in it anymore!! I believe it's only on day 8-- and already it's dark and taking up half the egg. So it looks like I'll only have one chick hatch (if it does hatch). I put 3 more eggs in this morning. I'm down to just Zelda laying and she only lays every other day and i didn't want the eggs to get too old waiting for more to go in. Sigh. So sad about my egg.

I really need to get my act together today. I may run to town to see my Mom this morning so I can get back home and get busy. I tried to clean yesterday so now I hurt all over today. It sure doesn't take much. I hate going anywhere in the morning. I really like just chilling and drinking my coffee.
My attempts at fixing Choppers' wing have gone backwards. He keeps picking off his bandages and he managed to turn his wing just the opposite direction with the one I finally got to stay. Dumb duck! I need to get him a prosthesis or something! I think I need a short popsicle stick. That would hold it in place. I guess I'll go look through scrap wood and hope I can find something that will work.
I saw the forecast last night and it looks like there is a chance of rain every night this week. I was really hoping it would dry out some. I want to get my garden tilled! I am still not sure where I want to put it either. Having places for pens and gardens where I can get water to is my biggest problem. I really can't afford to install a bunch of water lines. It sure would be nice not to have to pull a million miles of hose around.

yeah, I need to plant my garden too. BUt I think this year, I'm going to do some started plants. My mint, lavender and rosemary are all okay. Then I have two more rows of perennials coming back in, but as I recall, they were another herb and I didn't use them last year. Going to rip them out to make room for strawberries, radishes, a couple tomatoes, peppers, and garlic.. :) We have a nursery near by called Dutch's and they have awesome plants there and many more you've never heard of. They know me WELL in there. They also have the best rose selection in all of Wichita and I'm kind of a rose fanatic. They don't carry fruit trees, but they know an awful lot about them and carry all the products for them, so I go in there for that, too. Ahhhh, Spring!!!

I hope you get Chopper sorted out. I don't know what angel wings are? Does that mean they fold the wrong way out and stick out instead of curving into the body?? Someone had a silkie a while back and they called it's wings angel wings and it kind of looked like that.

Danz-- okay, I got my entry form and money in the mail today for the Emporia Lyon County Spring Poultry Show! So it says we have to have our birds there between 7:00-8:30 for check in. Then there is Showmanship, Judging, an Avian Quiz bowl and a few other events they have planned. It looks like we can't cage out until 4pm. So you could meet us anytime that day and you won't miss us! LOL I signed up the two silkies again and I don't know if I'm going to regret this--- but I signed up Seymore too! It might not be very fun driving her up there... or figuring out how to bathe her! Maybe in the bath tub??! I need to pick up some glycerine for her final feather rinse. The only down side is that her tail feathers are a bit beat up from getting in and out of her kennel to lay. I dont' know if that makes a BIG difference or not. I have no idea what quality she is, so this will be fun to see if she is Pet Quality, Breeder or Show Quality.

Rosie- do you know of anyway to partially repair the ends of Seymore's tail feathers? Can I use wax or something??? I'm sure people do find a way to do something with them. I'll see if I can get a picture of her tail today and post it and see how I can fix it!
