Consolidated Kansas

Thanks!! She has been around goats, cattle, chickens, ducks, barn cats, kittens, other dogs, you name it. I talked to the guy for quite a while because I was concerned that there was a reason they were rehoming her but he just said they were retiring and didn't need 3 dogs around to guard 2 horses. They are finishing selling off their livestock. He said she is a great dog and super gentle with all their critters. She doesn't roam very far, pretty much stays on their property. She would babysit the baby goats during kidding and the barn cats curl up with her to take a nap. I am mostly worried that she is going to be upset about moving. I am thinking I might put her in the goat pen and there are a couple of extra roos in there right now so I can assess her behavior with my extra boys first before I trust her with my beloved laying girls. I am excited to have a dog out there in the dark with me!!

I think it is a rose comb, I am new to all of this though, so I can't be certain. It looks like a circle of combiness. I think he/she is a RIR. Why would it be different if it is a rose comb?

Is it a rose comb? If it's a rose comb, it could still be a female.

Has anyone had any experience with shipped hatching eggs? I'm getting some & just wondering if I should have them sent priority mail or just eat the cost & have them sent overnight. What does everyone think. It's really expensive to do the overnight, it's $40, just for shipping, Oh & they're coming from California.

Hawkeye-Yep. That was me. You are the neurotic hatcher. I would leave that egg alone. Let momma hen take care of it. I'm kind of concerned, however, about your incubator. Simply not turning the egg over the weekend isn't that apt to cause the chick inside to die. More often I think what happens is that the chick gets kind of "stuck" in the hatching process and may not pip due to being stuck to the side of the egg.

I came home with about 18 more bantam partridge wyandotte eggs today. So much for not hatching during my surgery. I am making an exception for these eggs, anyway. Besides, they won't hatch until a couple weeks after my surgery. Since I have the GQF with the auto turner now my DH won't have to do much other than make sure there is water in the auto water system. As of today, I have 8 chicks hatched from the previous batch of BPW eggs. They are really cute little chipmunk chicks.... alll except one. The one is more of a solid pattern and a little darker reddish brown. Someone told me "Dat be a rooster." I hope they are right. That would mean I have one rooster and 7 pullets.

Any ideas on what might be wrong with my Brinsea? Temperature, humidity?? Last night I asked my boy about how he candled the egg and asked him if he shook it. He said no, but then a while later he said it wouldn't show up, so he did shake it a tiny bit. Uhh, Huh. I don't know if this is incubator troubles or kid troubles. Sigh. We'll find out soon because I put 3 more eggs in yesterday. I did leave the egg alone under my hen. Before I put it back, I was able to chip off the huge dried on glob of poo and remove a lot of it... so we'll see how that goes. That's one egg that shouldn't have any "operator error" unless my pullet goes on strike!

Ivy- I am actually going on Friday to look at a female Pyr. She is a bit older but sounds perfect for what we need and I am hoping that if we can get a dog that has been doing this for a while that we can then get a pup to help her and she can help me teach the pup.

Does anyone have suggestions for helping her hang around if it works out and I bring her home? Should I pen her up for several days so she knows where home is?
Yay Josie!! I read your other post too and it sounds like she's a great dog sleeping with the goats and cats. If they can jump fences... maybe put her on a really long chain for a while? I don't know how they do on chains, though. I would probably buy her a nice big real bone from the pet store to give her something to chew on and feel more at home. I've seen the bones that are like a foot and a half long. That should hold her for a while?

No idea, Trish! The only eggs I've ever had in the mail were the little Rosecombs. All of their air sacs (but 5) were loose and wiggling around in there. I'm also thinking they got a really good shake up because none of them even STARTED to develop! Not like what I've seen my silkie eggs finally do. But they got here fast enough-- they arrived on the second day. I'd say that's pretty fast. I think it's the handling in between. I'm going to bet no matter how fast they ship, if they throw that box around, it's not going to matter. I wonder if they throw the boxes around even more on the faster shipping since they have less time? Just speculating since I have NO idea! Also, a lot of the overnight shipping is done on airplanes. I have no idea how the air pressure will effect them.

CheCouKan-I'm trying to get Hawkeye to come over here to the Coffeyville show in Aug.

Don't remember who asked, but my kids, and I think half their club all live in town. Hawkeye is right, there is so much they can do in 4H. Even big animal projects can be done without the actual animal. "Horseless Horse Project" etc.

We have the 4 bantam hole wooden rectangle showboxes like in the second photos. I've seen a variation of the other ones at the POOPs get together in OK. Someone there made them, but with just a support/carry top brace and wooden front/back. Really uptown looking. The rest of the sides was a tighter mesh. You could ask in the OK thread for directions or prices. I'll be going in May and could bring something back.

It was our extension agent who told us we couldn't enter in other counties 4H fairs unless we left our club and joined one in that county. Had a heated discussion about it last year. We had been debating in future going to Columbus' fair instead of our own. (CheCouKan's fair) He said our county fair was our one and only qualifier for state so long as we remained in our current club. Other parents who have switched clubs/counties before told us the same thing. It sucks, because we'll never qualify with the judge we usually get. At least nothing we would want to take to state. So we do the opens at state instead, but then get chewed out because we don't bring anything for 4H.

Honestly, I don't mind not doing a bunch of 4H fairs. Maybe ours are a lot different in our area though. All around us, they are multiple days long, usually in the heat of the summer with minimal facilities and security. I hate showing, but I love looking. Give me a nice, big open show any day. Especially in OK, MO or AR!

Allergies are kicking my rear at present. I'm so behind in both inside and outside work.

Hawkeye you are so funny. You do tend to obsess about those eggs! I do understand though.
Trish, I WOULD NOT pay the extra shipping cost. Just be sure the eggs are shipped out on a Monday or Tuesday so they have time to get there before the weekend. I could take an extra day or so. Just be sure the person shipping the eggs cushions them well. I swear sometimes the US postal service bounces those packages off the wall playing basketball with them.
Josie that is awesome. Pen her up for a few days. If you have a larger fenced area that would be ideal especially if you can put her in with goats or something. GPs are very territorial and it is going to take her a little while to feel at home. Do what you can to make her feel welcome. That means animals and birds to bond to and lots of treats and affection. She will most likely be scared to death of you and might even act crabby at first until she is over fearing you and the move. My gal is so sweet but yet she would take some one's arm off if I they tried to move her. They are not aggressive dogs at all except to predators but they are very shy. Just make her feel at home as much as you can.
Ask the owners if she has a special treat she enjoys. My dogs love that fake doggy bacon. Those little things make them very happy.
You won't regret getting this dog and you'll be wondering how on earth you lived without one of them.

Hawkeye-A friend of mine was at the show this weekend. Cody. He had some bantam partridge wyandottes, not in show condition but straight out of the breeder pen. If you are absolutely sure your brinsea is keeping good temps and humidity (Checked with multiple thermometers) then your problem very well may be kid problems. I sure DON"T want to blame them if they are not the problem, though. It's supposed to be a fun project for them, too. Another thought might be temp spikes. I bought a thermometer that keeps track of current temp as well as any highs and lows between the times you check it. It's pretty nice, accurate and reads very quickly. I ordered it from "Sper Scientific." They sell a lot of different ones, so you would just have to cruise their website to find what you want. I think I paid about $28. for mine.

Josie-GP's HATE, I mean HATE being chained up. If this is an older female she might not be so apt to jump the fence, but do keep her penned up with your goats. It sounds like she is already socialized to people so she should be easier to move than some. There are people who do not socialize their GP's at all, and it makes the moving process almost impossible. What Danz said is spot-on.

Avery-Rosie puts on a pretty darn good show down there, and I'm sure she would appreciate any help you could give her at that time. It really is too bad the kids can't do multiple county fairs. I don't think the show Hawkeye went to was a "county fair" but more of an "open" 4-H show for all 4H poultry enthusiasts. It seems like with county fairs struggling to keep their exhibits up they might want to reconsider that idea of being able to show at more than one county fair. I don't know for sure, but perhaps the intent was to keep some of the kids that are "pros" from coming in and sweeping the awards at multiple counties. Maybe they could change the rules to include your county of residence and any neighboring county. It would make sense to me. Of course there is nothing to keep your kids from entering the open class division in multiple counties. I showed in 4H as a kid, but my kids did open class. It was impossible for me to take the kids to 4H meetings with the schedule my ex and I had and his total lack of flexibility so we just did open class, and the kids were accepted by the other 4H kids at the fair the same as if they were a 4H member.

I just pulled another 8 baby ducks out of the hatcher and have several more pipped.
It looks like it is going to rain here in a little bit. Makes me very sad. I wanted so bad to get some work done outside today. I found out the arms on my tractor are too short for my new tiller. So I need to go buy some longer arms and then have the PTO shaft cut shorter before I can use it. Just my luck. I was really wanting to get out there and start tilling. It is going to irritate me a lot if I can't get my garden in as planned.
