Consolidated Kansas

Hawkeye,
I'll be praying for your friend-- her first name please if you don't mind. Anyway I will be praying each day for her. Such a hard thing for her to go through. Kare

I'm leaving later today to go pick up my new puppy, Lizzy. I'm so excited. The excitement might diminish a little the first time she piddles on the floor, but maybe if my DH and I are both diligent we can prevent that all together. Seems like almost every dog I've ever raised has had a least a few accidents in the house. My DH's bird dog, Buster, was raised in the house by my DH and he has NEVER had an accident in the house. These havanese are supposed to be smart and easily trained, so I will hope I can prevent the accidents.

So excited for you!

Quote: ...But just THINK how sore you would be if you had to drive all those nails in with a hammer. We have a framing nailer. It is great. Dh just bought a brad nailer. I haven't used it yet, but I think I will get my turn soon!

Eventually I want a brad nailer too. I actually bought the framing nailer on ebay and got it for a good price because it looks kind of beat up, paint missing etc. I really didn't care how it looked as long as it works and it has worked great so far.

Congrats Ivy. I hope your puppy is the angel she looks like. I've got to get around. I need to go test Josie's birds this afternoon. Years ago there was a store in Topeka that was going out of business. I think it was Pay n Pac. Anyway I bought a ton of power tools for like 80% off. I also tend to stock up for myself when Sears puts out the package deals on tools. I love Harbor Freight for the little things.
Tweety You are going to be hooked. I bought a framing nailer, then had to have a pneumatic stapler, then finish nailer, then roofing nailer, then metal shear etc etc etc. We have 2 big air compressors and 2 compact ones. That way we have one in the barn and one in the house permanently. But have the two portable ones to move where ever we are working outside. Theres been several times we've used two at once so we didn't have to switch tools when we were building something.

Last year when I was building that set of wooden stacking pens my DH was going to town so I told him to pick up some staples for me so I could put the wire mesh on the pens.

He didn't exactly pick up the staples I wanted, but he came home with an electric staple gun and staples. I love that thing, and him, too!

Hawkeye- I am so sorry about your friend. I am sure they will take fabulous care of her at Mayo and she will just be surrounded by wonderful people there. I know several people that have gone to Mayo for various types of cancer and they were all thrilled with the doctors and nurses and staff. I am sorry about crack! Such a bummer, I was crossing my fingers for you on that one!

HE chicken- I have always adopted older dogs too. I am not a fan of potty training and all the silliness of a puppy but I eat crow on a regular basis because I have a GP pup outside. Although, I find it easier with her than a house dog, less for her to "get into" I suppose. Or maybe I just don't know what she is getting into!!!

Tweety- Good for you asking for your jig saw! My DH thinks I am crazy down there in the woods wacking brush back. Probably because I cut and he loads it in the trailer! I offer to let him have a turn but he always declines because he thinks he might cut down something I want to save!! He is a good guy for putting up with me and my craziness!!

Trish- Glad your pups are working hard and keeping those darn coyotes away! I was walking Molly the other night because she had to be leash walked for a week after her spay to allow her time to recover. I heard one pack of coyotes start carrying on south of us and the one northeast of us started going too in response. I thought Molly would want to run and bark so I waited to see what she would do. Her ears perked up and she listened for a minute. Then she sat down and arched her head back and let out the loudest, longest howl I have ever heard a dog make. When she stopped howling the yipping had stopped and she waited a minute then decided she was pleased with that and got up and walked away!!! I guess mama wolf had spoken and I didn't hear another peep from any coyotes for the rest of the night! She just amazes me!

Well, I have got to get this place ready to go! Danz is coming to test by birds today, hope it goes well and isn't a three ring circus of chasing chickens! Wish I had kids on days like this...need to borrow Karens kiddos to wrangle these wild birds!

Hawkeye, awww.... I was sure hoping Crack would make it. I'm glad you have so many others that are doing well. I'll keep your friend in my thoughts today.

Tweety, I get stressed out by company, too, but for different reasons. If I have to feed them, I'm all in a tizzy trying to think of something they'll like. DH and I don't eat like most of our family and friends do and I can't bring myself to try and make them eat that way when they're here. My dogs are the other problem. Gypsy wants to jump a little, and she mouths people. She's done it ever since we got her. Despite a lot of work, she's not perfect, but try to explain that to people especially if they're not dog people. She doesn't jump on us or mouth us, but we haven't been able to get her to generalize that to all people, and most of them won't do what we ask in order to teach her not to do it to them. It's even worse now that the dogs don't get along because one is always separated, either in a kennel or outside or in the basement. Then I have to listen to all the little comments about that.

Ivy, how exciting for you to bring Lizzy home today! Pictures, please!

HEChicken, we've done the puppy thing several times and decided we were done with it. Gypsy was a year-old rescue dog and that's most likely how any future dogs will be found for us. We found her through Petfinder, so we could still be choosy about the breed. Still, there's nothing cuter than a puppy and I melt every time I see one of those soft little faces. Then I think, well, MAAAYBE I could do it again. Then DH brings me back to reality.

My nephew's back for an undetermined amount of time. His girlfriend is supposed be getting some quotes to find out which of their cars will be cheapest to fix so at least they'll have one. In the meantime, he needs to be here so he can get to work. DH talked to them about moving back to town and the girlfriend jumped all over that; I don't think she's happy where they are. It would be a lot cheaper for them and give them a chance to get out from under their debt. It costs them a crazy amount of money to live where they live, compared to what it would cost them here.

On the plus side, when they went to Lehigh last night to see about his car, DH came home with a grill and smoker. His grill has been falling apart slowly but surely and he spent part of yesterday looking for Weber grills on Craig's List. He specifically wanted a Weber because everyone he knows who has one has had it forever, while the people with the cheaper ones end up replacing them every few years. He found one for a great price and it happened to be just where he was going to be last night. The grill is only about 2 years and pretty much half the price of a new one, and the guy threw in his smoker. DH's smoker is still working, but beginning to rust out at the bottom. So at least HE came home happy. I'm going to make some banana bread to cheer up my nephew, since he loves banana bread and asked me last time he was here why I didn't make any!

Cher - I share some of those same reasons. At least the food situation is under control by taking them out to eat for most of the major meals, but we have the two dogs and Darwin is still very much a puppy at heart. He wishes he could be a jumper, i'm glad he's too big for that, but he is a mauler of kisses and loves. at 150lbs, not many of my family is crazy about a dog that big wanting to climb in your lap every minute that you are there. My brother always brings his dog, who doesn't get along with any other dogs at all - so he winds up leaving her in his truck the entire visit which pisses me off and stresses me out - it's so not fair to the dog at all - especially when it's hot. He does go out and walks her every couple hours and brings her cold drinks, but grrrrr.. I've argued with him about this so much I just can't do it anymore. LOL.. Also having to deal with my parents (who have been divorced for 25 years) bitching about why the other is there, when it's a mutual grandchild.. so childish. Didn't mean to unload on everyone. Yes. I'm a bit stressed out and can't wait for this all to be over :) (As much as I love my family.... a little love goes a long way.. lol)

Danz and Ivy, I know she would appreciate any all prayers. She goes to KU med center first to have extension testing done that will be sent to Mayo so they can decide their plan for surgery. So it won't be yet, but when it is closer, I will let you know so we can be sure to pray for the surgery.

HeChicken, that is incredibly sad about your friend that went thru all of that with her brain tumor. Did she make it? You never said. My friend, she lives pretty close to me, so we end up doing a lot of things together and she's been suffering with what the Dr's thought was MS-- she was going blind every now and then and having so many neurological issues all of a sudden-- like her hands freezing up, etc.. Now this... and I'm thinking now maybe she doesn't have MS, but maybe it's this tumor that has been causing all of this. (that is just my own opinion now-- I have no idea)

Ivy I hope your puppy potty trains quickly! With my Shih Tzu, I got her from the humane society when she was 2 years old. She never ONCE pottied in the house. Which is funny, because that was the reason her family got rid of her. They said she peed on the couch, and everywhere. When I got her, I brought her home and put her on a leash attached to my pants and any time she started sniffing, I put her out. I had her pottied trained in a week and pretty darned reliable. The trick is that they are not left to wander around on their own. I'm sure the first family just didn't even watch her, and they never even really attempted to potty train her. Their loss, my gain, because she is an excellent dog! Anyway-- good luck and post pics when you get your baby!!!

Thanks Tweety-- I was really sad to see Crack die. Ah well. It's amazing it lived that long, really.
