Consolidated Kansas

I'm sorry I'll miss you all at the swap this weekend, we're going the opposite direction. I hope you all have a good time & sell lots of birds! I will be taking 6 little Ameraucana chicks with me when I leave to deliver to a gal from Pittsburg who is going to meet me in Baxter Springs, so that will leave me only one little chick left from the recent hatches, but I have about 21 more eggs in the big incubator & 2 in the hatcher, so hopefully I will have more.

I spent 3 hours outside tonight rigging extra water bottles & water bowls & such for the rabbits. There are still a couple that don't have extra bowls, but I may scrounge up some more later. I was trying to wire this one water bottle on one of the cages & it was one of the does that is kind of ornery & she was biting & pulling on the wire, she didn't want it in her cage, so I had to take it off & just give her an extra bowl, crazy rabbit. I have one that dumps both his food bowl & his water bowl upside down & some days carries it into the wood box on the back of the cage so I have to fish it out of there to feed & water him. Then I switched around one waterer for the chicks outside in the pen so the little chicks left here will have extra water. There won't be as many of them, so they should be all right. The little turkeys will have a gallon waterer too, so hopefully everyone will have enough water to last until I get back if they don't play in it or dump it out. They all will get extra food tomorrow too. I filled the automatic feeders in the chicken coop & the young chicks outside have a full feeder also. I got an extra water bowl for the dogs too & filled it, so they will have extra too. The bad thing with the GPs is they don't share well & I have to leave their food in the self feeder in the dog run for them, so they have to both eat out of it. I normally have to feed them in separate bowls or they fight. I guess they'll just have to work it out.

Sapphire, I'm so sorry for all of your troubles with the rooster attacking your other chickens. I'm afraid that rooster would be stew. I would have thought the same thing of my pup if I had seen it with a chicken too. Ours are still killing kittens & I don't know how to stop them. It's not that we really need all of these kittens, but I hate to see them just killing them like that. We don't have very many left now. I wish they would get old enough to run really fast & hide, but they're still young. I'm afraid they're going to start killing my favorite cats next & then I am going to be really upset. I have two long haired ones that are my favorites, a calico & a black & white. Some of our cats have disappeared lately & I'm afraid I know where they went. I don't know how you break them of that habit. Does anyone have any ideas?

Well I still have lots to do tonight, so I'd better get back to it.

I forgot to mention I might bring a bunch of the bantam polish roos. No females. These guys are from grand champion lines. I might have some more babies later and could possibly sell some females at a later date. I'll be selling these really cheap. Ivy you can get $2 -$3 for roos for the pot up there. Not great but it's a way to move them.
I'll try to get there as early as I can. It will be at least 7:30 I am sure. I will need to get things done and get back home because I have a man coming for many birds on Saturday afternoon. I can introduce you to a few other bird people if they are there as well.
Medawinks tell Sera I can't wait to see her again.
I really wish they had these things later in the day. I hate to cage up birds the night before. I think it is stressful to them. And there is never enough time or daylight to do it in the morning.
I might have to get DH to put the topper on the truck again so I can use it.
Danz-I've seen your polish boys and they are NICE. Gosh... they need some nice WCB girls to go with them. Wish I knew someone that had some. They would make some very nice breeders.

Maybe I should bring one of your boys home and wait for a pullet????? ... oh yeah... like I need another variety. I do like the polish though. When I was in 4H as a kid I had the overall grand champion chickens at the state fair (4H and open class), back when we showed in "trios." They were golden laced beared polish, LF.

Need to re-home Rupert ASAP!
Needing to re-home my 14 week old Black Australorp roo Rupert ASAP. Willing to give him away for FREE to anyone who will take him for something other than a meal. He started crowing every morning a few weeks ago. Finally had a neighbor ask me about it yesterday so I figured it was time for him to go before I get a visit from the city. Guy is new to the neighborhood (rental property) so I don't know if he would be a problem or not. Decided not to wait to find out.

If you're interested in taking him just send me a PM & we'll figure out how to make it happen!

On a side note. The other BA in this photo I suspect may also be a roo. Hasn't started crowing yet that I know of. I can't tell from the feathers if it's a hen or a roo. Tail feathers & overall size suggest hen; saddle feathers & head shape suggest roo. If it starts crowing I'll know for sure & he will have to be re-homed as well.

Thanks
David

The quote/multiquote features aren't working for me again. I'm sorry; there were over 50 posts since I last checked and I can't remember everything I want to. Since I was using the multiquote, I didn't take notes. I'm tired and grumpy and headed to bed next, but I did want to say to Sapphire how sorry I am for the last couple of days you've had. As someone said, forgive yourself. You did the best you could with what you knew at the time. You can't do any more than that.

Sapphire- So sorry about such a rotten day. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Wichitakid- Both the australorps are boys. You might try listing on craigslist too with a $10 to good home only fee. I have found a couple nice roos good homes that way.

Well, whaddayaknow. My computer internet just started working after I made that last post. My email is still not working, though.

Someone asked what I would be bringing. I am bringing some half grown lakenvelders in sets of 3, 4, and 5. One rooster per set. One of the sets is 1 and 2 year olds, great layers of a med. egg. They lay as may eggs as my leghorns, just not as big.

One pair of slate blue turkeys. Hen is currently laying and has been a good layer.

MANY chicks-lavender, silver and wheaten ameraucana, black copper marans (limited number) bantams in black breasted red old english, black tailed white japanese, partridge wyandottes.

Turkey poults in royal palm, blue slate and mixes of the two.

A few guinea keets... one less than expected because my little lavender keet broke his leg today. I hope it heals, but it's not looking good.

I am also bringing along some extra roosters that I need to get rid of. One mean old booger I hope someone puts him in the freezer. I will only sell him for that purpose. I've got a couple nice, breeder quality ameraucana roosters and several pet quality.

I am debating selling my breeder trio of wheaten ameraucanas. They are one of my favorites, but I need to cut down some. I just found out today I will be getting 5 of my sister's (Checoukan) brown/red old english. These are champion bloodlines and she has done very well with them. I'm going to need more room for them, so the wheatens may be the ones to go. Whoever buys the trio (I won't sell them separate) will be getting a nice set of purebred wheaten ameraucanas.
Ivy,I would be interested in your set of 5 lakenvelders. Also your trio of wheaten ameraucanas.

Danz, wish I could make it Sat. ,I would take a couple of those roosters. Would like to have some more pullets also. How many roosters are you selling?

OH wow!! What a horrific day you had today with all the dead and nearly dead birds! What a mean, mean rooster. If you aren't using him to breed, I'd be having him for dinner! That is a lot of birds he destroyed. I would have no qualms eating him. So sorry about your injured. I haven't dealt with rooster attacks, but I did deal with a turkey attack on my Polish to the head. She was scalped and lost the top part of her skin, too!! I kept triple antibiotic on it. I'm guessing the blue spray has antibiotics in it, right? If not, add that. If they aren't drinking well, get a syringe and suck up the water with sugar and electrolytes and put it down their beaks slowly... Don't worry about the food right now, concentrate on the water for the first day. Once they are feeling a bit better, they will start to eat on their own again. Second day if they aren't eating, then I'd give them yogurt, because you can suck that up into a syringe easily and put that down their beaks, too! I had to do that for TWO stinkin' days for my Polish because she tried to die on me a couple of times. But she pulled thru fine. She did sleep in the house for a few days. And you know, don't feel too badly about Sarge, because he was pulling feathers, and there was no way you could have known! I would have thought the same thing. Forgive yourself and learn from it.

That's what I had to tell myself about Seymore when she tried to kill my Polish.

I'm having to change out the wet food every now and then, they tromp it down into a hard mash. But yeah, they go crazy over it. I'm really glad Sticky is eating on his own. I was ready to pull my hair out thinking I was going to have to syringe him egg yolk for the next few days until he got bigger! He is still sluggish and not as active as the others, so we'll see how he continues to fare.

Sapphire I know you thought Sarge must have killed the chickens but he has been exposed to them since birth so it wouldn't have been likely. Maybe give him a treat and a good petting. He will know to leave the carcass alone next time.
I've had a few hens torn up from roosters. The first thing I do is separate them to keep the other chickens from picking on them. Then blue Kote, triple antibiotic ointment, or pine tar on the wounds. Some yogurt or probiotics might help keep it from becoming infected. I'd be ripping the head right off that darned rooster. There is no room for a mean rooster in my group. He'd make some nice stock you could freeze and use later if you didn't want to eat him now.

Thanks everybody. On a good note, it turns out, it wasn't my sisters betrothed pullet that was killed, it was her look-alike. That made it a little bit better...only a little.

The blue spray I got is supposed to be like Blue Kote (sp?) because they don't carry that brand here, for some reason.

The birds seem to be hanging on and feeling a tiny bit better, but morning may be different. I will slather them with all I've got and feed them by syringe to help them heal. It's just gruesome to see their neck muscles exposed through the ripped skin. I leave on Friday, so hubby has taken charge. He's p***ed that the first bird that was killed was his favorite roo. I didn't even know he HAD a favorite

Yes, Sarge has forgiven me and we made up this afternoon, shortly after the whole incident. Maybe I'm nuts, but he really seemed to understand that I knew I was wrong and he was such a good boy.
Danz, that's why it blew my mind thinking he must have done it. He's been around them all his life and has been so good and protective of them. I'm just glad I didn't let loose the wrath of hell on the poor guy. He rather got the "WHO POOPED ON THE RUG!" scolding, but they are so sensitive, anything said harshly seems to hurt their feelings.

Anyway, I got the wind vs. pen problem taken care of. It is now properly anchored and ain't goin' nowhere!
The rooster that is guilty of the heinous acts will be addressed as soon as I get back. This is strike 2, he's out. But I don't have time to deal with him right now, so he's in solitary.

I really hope everyone else has a great rest of the week. I will probably be MIA for quite awhile.
Everyone who is going the the swap, have a great time! I would love to go sometime, just can't this time.

I'm off to try to catch up on some Z's. 6 hours in the last 2 days has finally caught up with me and the shower and bed are beckoning.

Sapphire, so sorry about an awful day. And I know just how you feel about blaming Sarge and then finding out it wasn't him. Fortunately, dogs are very forgiving.

David, both of those BA's look like boys, and you may find that as soon as you rehome Rupert, the other will start crowing. Years ago I got 8 chicks straight run and four were boys. At 16 weeks one started crowing so I thought I'd fix my problem by getting rid of the one that crowed. The very next morning, I heard a crow from the backyard. Yup, with the lead roo out of the picture, the next in line had started up.

Trish, I feel for you having the fill so many different water and feed containers for so many different species of animal, just to have some peace of mind while you're gone - been there, done that, and I know you never really stop worrying the whole time you're gone anyway.

Regarding killing cats, I wish I had some answers for you but from what I know of this, they can't be cured of it. Is it possible to rehome the cats?

I left and went outside to feed. My cat wrote this. She must have been excited about something!

I'm not even sure how she did that. She must have had one foot on the o, 0,and - keys.

Hilarious!!!!

I finally took Josie's advice and put some starter in a lid and soaked it with water! And THEN-- all the chicks went NUTS! It was like they were screaming "we can eat! We can Eat!! WE CAN EAT!!" and it was chaos in there as they all were gobbling up the soaked food. I'll be sure to do that from now on with my silkie hatches.
This reminds me of my silkies when they get their wet food. They are almost 6 weeks old now and I've started giving them the wet every other day just to make sure they are eating the dry as well. The wet is now more of a treat. I don't remember who mentioned that their birds weren't growing, but wow - mine are still so tiny. They look like 2 week old normal birds! I don't know when I'm ever going to get them out of the house. They have to be big enough to put into a dog kennel for separation for a while until the other birds get used to them. Right now they'd squeeze right out the bars. I have weened them off of a light during the night, so they are getting closer. They are seriously in their ugly stage right now. I keep forgetting to take pics and post them.

Sapphire - sorry you had such an ordeal with Sarge and the Roo. I would have thought the same thing after seeing him there plucking the bird.

If you are going to scramble some up to give to your chicks, scramble the whole egg.

Learn something new every day! When i heard about people feeding egg yolk only, i thought that meant the scrambled eggs as well. I've been separating and just scrambling the yolks - which is not that easy! LOL

I'm going to try to make it to the swap, but in my world, 8:30 is really early! LOL I usually stay up until about 2am on weekend and sleep till 9. We started that schedule when the kids started dating and leaving the house after they learned to drive. Now I like the quietness of the after midnight at home. :) How long does the meet go till?

Will be posting on Craigslist this weekend. Just wanted to give my friends on the forum first dibs.

Hmmm. Hadn't thought about that. Makes sense to me. If that's the case, then I'll have 2 birds to get rid of. Thanks for the heads up.
