Good morning all. I finally got a video of our 2 Ancona ducks (which we got from Danz last summer) and their playmate, Midnight. Midnight is our 14 mo old Black Lab and they go at it like this everyday! Sometimes Midnight will take a nap and the ducks will crawl on her and just lay there! The ducks can't wait for me to let them out of the pen in the morning! Just thought you all would enjoy this. I put it on YouTube because family have been wanting to see it too.

Need to re-home Rupert ASAP!
Needing to re-home my 14 week old Black Australorp roo Rupert ASAP. Willing to give him away for FREE to anyone who will take him for something other than a meal. He started crowing every morning a few weeks ago. Finally had a neighbor ask me about it yesterday so I figured it was time for him to go before I get a visit from the city. Guy is new to the neighborhood (rental property) so I don't know if he would be a problem or not. Decided not to wait to find out.

If you're interested in taking him just send me a PM & we'll figure out how to make it happen!



On a side note. The other BA in this photo I suspect may also be a roo. Hasn't started crowing yet that I know of. I can't tell from the feathers if it's a hen or a roo. Tail feathers & overall size suggest hen; saddle feathers & head shape suggest roo. If it starts crowing I'll know for sure & he will have to be re-homed as well.

David - How old are your BAs? I have a BA that is most definitely a hen and she is 12 weeks old. I will take pic when I got to let the girls out this morning. Yes, I know I am a tad late, but it has been raining buckets here since 4am! I think we have gotten about 2" to 3" of rain.

Everyone - The swap sounds fun, alas we have guests in town this weekend so going to the swap isn't in the cards. Probably a good thing too. I would end up walking away with another bird. Which oddly, I have given some thought to. At some point I would like to get a Marans. One of these days....

Oh Karen, that is awesome. When you described it I didn't 'think it would be that funny! Yep I don't think your dog would never have to worry about a flea or tick with those two around.

I noticed the main one in the video is male. Is the other one a male as well? We need to get you and Josie both a couple females to go with your boys.
I woke up this morning with my eyes swollen shut, a sore throat, and running a fever. I am sure it is allergies though. I took my normal meds and it seems to be improving. At least I hope so. I think DH is going to get the truck ready for me when he gets up later on if he has time before work.
SAPPHIRE, I hope you didn't feel I was scolding you for reprimanding Sarge. When I reread that I thought it might have been misinterpreted. It was meant as more of a reassurance that he wouldn't be chewing on the carcasses any more if it happened again. Of course these guys are still puppies and they will all chew on anything at this stage.
TRISH, what you need is a big mean tom cat that will scratch the bejeebies out of your pups. My cats hated dogs when I got these and one good slap across the face to each of them makes them walk around the cats and give them room. They actually will lay on the porch together now. It's hard to believe because my cats were totally terrified of dogs. I had to have my lip reconstructed because I was carrying my oldest cat and a dog charged us. He went over my head as fast as her could and used his back claw on my lip for traction. It fileted it.
WELL IT WORKED! I spent two hours watering the garden last night. We got a major storm. It was funny. I was watching the weather and the weather man was saying no rain. According to him there was a small cell northeast of Emporia that might drop a little rain. We are Southeast and as he was saying that it was pouring down rain. His radar must have been off or something. I haven't been out to check the garden but at least it finally got a really good soaking. I probably won't be able to get in there for days now.
And the best news of all.

I had three little midget white turkeys hatch so far today. They were actually due to come out of the bator this morning but I didn't expect them for a couple more days. There is one more that was pipped a little but shrink wrapping. He isn't ready to come out yet so I hope he makes it. The blood is still moving in the shell lining. I'm not sure about the other eggs cause I was so excited I didn't candle them. I need to get a bin ready for them. I want to watch these babies in the house for awhile to make sure everything is perfect for them. It would have been perfect to get those this week from the hatchery because they would have only been 2 days apart in age.
BAMAPROUD, I can bring you a couple of polish roos and give them to Ivy if you can work out getting them from her. IVY, if that acceptable. I'm not sure how many I will have. I just need to eliminate the boys. I sold too many of the girls and have more guys than gals. Hopefully I'll hatch a few later on. They haven't been laying all that well recently.
I've got a ton of keets to move out to the brooder this morning. I have some ducks pipped but not hatched yet. I don't care how many birds I have, I still love hatching. Maybe that is my problem. I'm a hatching addict.

Rob, I do have a couple of cuckoo Marans I've hatched. I let one really great roo go to the buyer against my better judgement. I just hope my old roo stays safe and does his job. Anyway I have a couple of young gals assuming color sexing is correct. I won't take those to the swap just in case you decide you want them later.

Here is a link with a breakdown on nutritional value of egg white vs. egg yolk. There is more protien in the egg white. The yolk has more fat, cholesterol, etc. but more of many of the other nutrients are found in the yolk.

In the case of a sick chick, I think syringing in the raw yolk is fine. If you are going to scramble some up to give to your chicks, scramble the whole egg.

Good to know! Thanks Ivy! In my case, the chick couldn't eat the white and it nearly killed him. But when they are big birds, it would certainly be doable.

Danz-I've seen your polish boys and they are NICE. Gosh... they need some nice WCB girls to go with them. Wish I knew someone that had some. They would make some very nice breeders.

Maybe I should bring one of your boys home and wait for a pullet????? ... oh yeah... like I need another variety. I do like the polish though. When I was in 4H as a kid I had the overall grand champion chickens at the state fair (4H and open class), back when we showed in "trios." They were golden laced beared polish, LF.

I really wish they were full size, because I'd buy a WCB roo! Although, I have two silkie roos in there right now I need to get rid of.

My favorite are the non-bearded polish, they look so neat with the big crest on their little heads. Ivy, that is neat that you used to show GL polish when you were a kid! I have fond memories of my WCB's that I showed when I was a kid. That is fantastic that you are getting some of your sister's OE's!! I LOVE those things!! I sure wish I had the room, because I could get into those in a heart beat, they are so darned cute!

This reminds me of my silkies when they get their wet food. They are almost 6 weeks old now and I've started giving them the wet every other day just to make sure they are eating the dry as well. The wet is now more of a treat. I don't remember who mentioned that their birds weren't growing, but wow - mine are still so tiny. They look like 2 week old normal birds! I don't know when I'm ever going to get them out of the house. They have to be big enough to put into a dog kennel for separation for a while until the other birds get used to them. Right now they'd squeeze right out the bars. I have weened them off of a light during the night, so they are getting closer. They are seriously in their ugly stage right now. I keep forgetting to take pics and post them.

Learn something new every day! When i heard about people feeding egg yolk only, i thought that meant the scrambled eggs as well. I've been separating and just scrambling the yolks - which is not that easy! LOL

Month old silkies should be big enough not to fit thru a wire dog kennel. You should take a picture so we can see how big they are now. I'm sure they are fine, but maybe they are just really slow to grow. The egg yolk thing only makes sense raw-- because I realized first hand that you can quickly choke them and shut off their breathing if you attempt to do the whites and yolk raw in a syringe-- the whites don't break down. The white just come out as a string and it won't break off and it nearly killed my chick. I had to pull it back out, dump my egg and start over again with just the yolk.


I have had a CRAZY morning. I damaged my barn this morning. I woke up at 6am and quickly rushed to get outside because I didn't want to work in the heat. I got my breeze way mucked out and used the tractor to scoop it all out and clear out. Unfortunatley, I was sooo exhausted after all the manual labor of mucking with the pitch fork that by the time I was putting the tractor up and driving it back thru the barn, I ran the front loader into my huge sliding door and pinned it into the side of the barn and put a tear right into the metal!! ARGH!! My DH is going to KILL me!!!!!! Then I backed it up, and THEN, I hit the front loaded into the side of a horse stall and messed up the wood. OMG!!!! I am working on like half a brain this morning, or something. I finally got the tractor put away with no further incident, but the damage is done. I went out and used the weed eater around my garden, and then did a half dozen other chores outside. I'm tired. My DH is at the gym running... he won't be home until later, so I'm not sure if I should show him all the damage now or wait... I have used that tractor since I was a kid, I know how to handle it, I can't believe I was so clumsy! Oh, I also put out a round bale of hay before I ran the tractor into the barn. It was after all the mucking, and untying the bale and positioning it... that's when I killed the barn. OH, and I nearly got myself killed, too.. I am VERY allergic to wasps and bees. So much so that I have an epi pen in the house after having to run to the ER a couple of times and being in serious trouble. Well, I was trying to unlatch my metal round feeder and I had one side unlatched, and i was pulling it apart (so I can put the new bale of hay inside the feeder) and instead, a swarm of hornets flew up and starting buzzing around trying to figure out who messed with them. But by then, I had already run as fast as I could half way across the field! LOL Seriously, I was like 2 acres away before the hornets could figure it out. So I ended up having to put my round bale just out in the middle of the pasture. Which is really wasteful and stupid. Makes me mad. But I can't get near that darned nest, and it looks like there are a LOT of them.

Bama-I would have to know for sure if you want the lakenvelders and ameraucanas.

I'm trying to talk my DH into taking 2 or 3 little bucklings with us. Gee. you used to be able to buy a little goat for $5. Now the price of goats has been $2.65-$2.85 per pound.... live weight! The market has skyrocketed on them.

I'm in a mental mess right now. My boss called and wanted me to come in to talk right now. He is in a bind with some of the stuff at work. He wants me to come in and "fix" the biggest problem area we have, as well as go back on the overnight shift to do it. I know it would be a feather in my cap to do this, but I am just not sure I can handle it physically yet (my foot still hurts like $%#*) plus I really don't like working the overnight shift. I have a terrible time sleeping during the day. I'm going to have to give it some thought, though. If they will make some accommodations for me, I will be glad to go in and do all I can to get things into first-rate shape.

Bosses don't "beg" but I could tell that was just about what he was doing. He was "highly" encouraging me. I'm going to give it a few days to think about it. One of the other problems I can forsee is he wants me to fix problems that are not in my hands to fix, such as personnel problems. I'm not the one that does the hiring and firing, and that is part of what needs to be done.

Danz, yeah I wish my cats would just scratch the heck out of these dogs & then they would leave them alone. I guess my cats are just too nice & it may be the end of them. Most of the male cats we had seem to have disappeared, there are only a couple left here, all the rest are females. I found another dead kitten on the front porch this morning, it wasn't doing well yesterday & I don't know if Lily played with it too rough or what. Maybe I need to go to the Humane Society & see if I can find a big old cat that needs a home, they have been having specials on free adult cats here in Cowley County for awhile now. I don't know if there is any other cost for them, but I guess I should check into it. All of the cats we have here now are all related in some way, maybe we need some new blood around here.

Well I spent an hour this morning taking extra food & water to all of my animals & birds, so I have done about everything I can at this point, now I just have to hope for the best I guess. I know I will be worrying the whole time I'm gone & I swear if my DH argues with me about leaving when I want to I'm going to smack him. I ran all day yesterday doing things to get ready & didn't get to bed until almost 2 last night & I told him that if he would have helped instead of sitting there watching TV I wouldn't have had to stay up so late. He had the nerve to say that I didn't TELL him to do anything, grrrr.

I'll try to check in on my phone, but it's hard to type much, so might just be reading for a few days. I hope the swap goes well & those of you that are selling do well & get rid of lots. Have fun & have a good weekend!

We have two males and should have gotten a female when we was at your place. If you bring one to the swap I will take it. Sorry about your allergies -- I have terrible trouble but always in the fall during harvest-- I have to hide in the house from all the dust and pollens! I am so envious of your rain!! We saw lightening to the south but we got about 5 drops this morning is all.

Hawkeye, so sorry about your tractor/barn troubles! Hubby would kill me if I did that with our tractors -- well he wouldn't kill me but I think he would be pretty mad!!

I don't drive the big lawn mower except out in the orchard because it is so hard to maneuver. Rarely do I drive the big John Deere tractors -- I prefer the little antique Ford tractor. Hope all goes well when you tell him>>>>

YAY on the rain!! We didn't get any here, and I'm bummed about that. Hopefully next week brings some rain, we really need it soon. CONGRATS on the midget turkeys!!! WooHOO!!!!! I hope they all do great!

Could you bring in a wheel chair? I know our church rents them out for free. I bet your church has them or some other place? You could even just leave it there so you don't have to drag it back and forth from home to work, IF you decide to go in. If they could work around you... but I would hate the night shift too. Good luck with trying to decide what to do! I would be tempted to go in, but I'm a sucker for working myself into the ground, too. So I'm not the best person to advise.
