Consolidated Kansas

So Ladies and Gentlemen this is some more of my downsizing!!!
Hate to say this Danz but.....you're doing it wrong

Boyd and Pauline were so sweet! My hubby bought his start of black angus from Boyd! They lived just a few miles from us. Small world!

HE -- awesome coop! puts my old sheep shed turned chicken house to shame!! :)

Danz -- so tickled to finally find the nest.

Question for anyone: My little banty cornish has 8 eggs under her but hasn't gone broody yet. I am leaving the eggs and will swap with the guinea eggs if she goes broody. She set up her nest behind a plywood divider in the chicken house. Do you think she might start setting on the eggs when she gets a few more or will she just continue to lay eggs?

Wow Danz! It has been an adrenaline filled day for both you and Marshmallow!! Glad the new vet is going to help decrease that adrenaline for the both of you next week :)

I know nothing about hatching eggs, but if I ever get brave enough to let my silkies set on them, your advice on how they should be packaged is being kept in a safe place for future reference:) I know my kids would love to see babies hatch, but I know I am not brave enough yet to incubate them like you do! I am deciding to let my son build a meal worm farm though:) I can't yet believe that.....

I don't remember seeing lavender or lemon orpingtons there....:). I do love my buff. Maybe someday that will be the kind of egg I let a silkie hatch :)

Ivy, what are they using on your foot? I have drop foot and pain in my heel from severed nerves. I would love to try anything to either decrease heel pain feeler some feeling in the ball of my foot. I gave up with the PT after a while once I figured out how to walk with the drop foot.

HE chicken, your chick is adorable!!!! I have a little Cochin roo too. He hasn't started to crow yet, so I keep hoping I am wrong. My friend who is going to take him when he does crow told me that he "might" just be a red combed pullet.... I am betting not. I don't know why I enjoy these little bantam Roos so much. They are just so tiny and full of so much spunk I guess:) I tried to keep my D'uccle from crowing, by putting him inside and that just seemed to intensify his need to crow CONSTANTLY when I did let him go out.... Drafted little goof ball!!!

Trish, so glad your foot is not getting worse! Those spider bites can be devastating. I had a student who was but when he was 2weeks old, above his ear while wrapped in a blanket. It disintegrated his skull and did major brain damage. It is a true miracle that he survived to be the light of his grandparents life. I am eager to see pics of more chicks! This addiction is sucking me in :)

And finally here is a pic of my pen I built for my young chicks I'm keeping:

They're very happy in there & they have lots of room for now to run around. I figure it won't be long before they outgrow this pen too, but hopefully by then they can go out with the big chickens. They will be used to each other by then since their pen is right in the run.

Well have a good afternoon all!

I started a mealworm farm this year. It is thriving, but I don't feel I have enough to start feeding to the birds yet. I am hoping to use them for cage training some of my show birds, and any extras will just be protien supplement for the rest. So far the hardest thing about the mealworm farm is remembering to keep a fresh veggie or something in the substrate for moisture for them.

On my foot they are doing ultrasound treatments and today I had my first ionophoresis treatment. The use decadron for that. I can't tell if it has helped any or not yet. I am also still trying to break in the orthotic support I had to get for my shoe. I think that is the hardest part. They say don't try to have it on for more than 2 hours at a time for a while. If I'm on my feet for 2 hours by the end of that time my foot really hurts, so it is going to take a while.

I AM REALLY EXCITED! Today BamaProud came by to pick up some birds. Two of the hens he was getting were under the hen house. It was going to be really hard for me to get down on my hands and knees (or probably my butt) to get them out from under there. I had read several places where Havanese dogs have been used for herding family flocks of chickens. Bella, the mama dog has shown great interest in my turkeys that are free ranging in the yard. As soon as I went in the pen to try to get those hens out, Bella went right under there and chased them out for me! She didn't hurt any, she just chased them out.

I am going to start reading everything I can about training a herding dog. Gee. Wouldn't it be nice to have dogs that protect my flock as well as dogs that help me manage my flock!

HEchicken I think you might be right. I wonder if there is a chickens anonymous club??
By the way, Heather, your coop is looking awesome. What a great job you are doing!!! Can't wait to see the finished project. Won't it be great to get moved so when you run out in your PJs it won't matter cause people won't be so close???
Prairie I really hate to see you hatching those guinea eggs. You'll quit buying from me!!! Seriously I do hope the broodies get broodie again soon. My vote is to put wire on the floor. Maybe not something as small as hardware cloth. Maybe a 1 X2 welded wire or something. They can still peck the ground that way but it would act as a predator deterent. If you would have a reason to move that cage outside then you wouldn't have to worry about a coon or something digging in.
Medawinks, Lavender and Lemon cuckoos are more recent developments. Lemon cuckoos came from England and are a reasonably new color. I'm not sure how many people have bred the Lavenders but they have become more common. Who wouldn't want a purple chicken? I am really trying to get into some more specialized breeds and finer breeding. But I guess I have to hatch first because I can't afford to buy the best stock.
Your little D'uccle is still a crowing fool and he thinks he can breed any hen regardless of size. He is a terror. He and his Favorelle buddy are very good about coming when I pick up their feed bowls. Neither one of them want to be cuddled but they sure like to be at my feet.

Wow, what a bonus. A great little dog that has a job.

KarenS, I sure hope you don't need your incubator too soon, I'm sorry I sure thought I would have parts by now.

Nope, don't need it anytime soon! No worries, Teresa. I'm glad I could help you out. I know this is terribly inconvenient but when they work right, they really are the best thing ever. I hope they truly get the problem solved so you can finally enjoy yours. Hang in there, it will work out.

Wow IVY, I never heard of a Havanese herding dog. They're usually just cutie little dogs. I know my Maltese/Shih Tzu would never herd anything, she's too much of a baby. The Yorkie on the other hand loves chasing things, but isn't helpful about it.

Prairie, I didn't put a floor on mine because it's inside the run, so I'm not worried about anything digging under. If I ever took it outside I would have to put one on, but right now it's much easier to clean it out without one. You might think about that aspect too. I'm building one similar to the other one for my turkeys for outside, but it will have a wood shelter on the end so they will have somewhere to get in out of the weather. It won't be beautiful, but who cares, it will only be temporary anyway until they grow some more. Right now they're practically on top of each other in the brooder. I spent several hours outside tonight getting the framework built for it & tomorrow I have to go buy hardware cloth for the outside because I used all I had. Since it's outside & I need to make sure they stay safe I want to use that instead of chicken wire. I will put a gate on the end like I did the other pen using a pallet, it has worked pretty well. I just took off part of the boards & covered it with hardware cloth & then put hinges on it & hooked it to the other frame. Then I put hooks with safety latches on the other side to latch it shut. It swings out plenty far enough so I can get in there & grab the waterer & their feeder & fill them. Man those turkeys are really the messiest birds, they poop more than any of the other birds. I can't wait to get them out of that brooder so I can clean it out, yuck!

Danz, I got some Lavender Orpington eggs too, they've got another week to go from today. I candled them & had to pitch several this afternoon because there were quitters & some never got started, so I'm down quite a few from what I started with, but as you say it's a crap shoot when you get shipped eggs. I didn't want to raise that breed, I just think they're pretty & wanted a couple for laying, so we'll see what I get. I put my 4 peacock eggs in the incubator today. This is my first time to try to hatch those, do you have any tips or have you hatched them before? Yeah I know peacock eggs aren't cheap, I bought mine off eBay for this batch & they were pricey & then I was approached by someone on BYC who had seen my wanted ad on here & they're sending me some more next week. I'm hoping to at least hatch a few for a surprise for my DH. He has always said it would be fun to have some peacocks & he loved the ones we saw in Puerto Rico when we stayed at a hotel there. This hotel was all open on the front, no doors, it was really unique & they had all of these beautiful peacocks wandering the grounds. It was the first time we had ever seen pure white peacocks, they were beautiful & they had other colors too.

KarenS, I'm so glad you aren't needing your incubator right now, you truly are an angel. Maybe later on when my Swedish Flowers start laying I can get you some eggs to hatch. I know that is one of the breeds I read that can be used for the Alohas. Those turned out to be some really expensive chicks! I should be getting my other really expensive eggs any day too, at least half of them anyway & then when the guy manages to get his hen to stop being broody I'll get the rest of them. What a time for the stupid hen to go broody, right in the middle of my order!
