KarenS, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Congrats on the egg too

I remember how excited I was when I got my first egg this time around. But what a great birthday present, wow!

I finally got my turkey pen done enough at dark to move the little buggers out into it, whew! That became way more of a project than I ever thought it would be. I still have a couple finishing things to do on it & the box needs some paint to protect it, but at least I got it done enough they could get out of that crowded brooder box. I put them in there & they kind of freaked, I don't think they knew what to do with all of that room. They are some dirty birds, but I don't want to get them wet right now for fear of them getting chilled. I hope they just get cleaned off in a dryer environment. I made that shelter box for them to get into & whoever said they think turkeys are claustrophobic must be right. They were actually afraid to go into the box. I had to coax them in there tonight. I didn't know turkeys hissed at you until tonight either, they were scared & they all were hissing at me.

My spider bite got worse again tonight. I don't know if it was because I put on my garden shoes & it was pressing on the bite or what but it spread all around it & it's burning just like it was when I first got bit. I soaked my foot again in epsom salts. Gosh it was actually looking better earlier today before I put that darned shoe on. I haven't been able to put a shoe over that since I got bitten. I guess I still can't. It sure is smarting now, I hope it calms down again, ouch!

I have about 15 eggs in the hatcher & 3 have hatched so far, 1 Ameraucana & 2 Welsummers so far. I haven't seen any sign of pipping as of yet on the lavender Orpingtons, come on little chicks! I hope to at least have some hatch. That will be the pits if none at all hatch, they weren't that cheap to buy the eggs. They're not actually due to hatch until tomorrow, these ones that hatched today are a day early. I seem to always have some Ameraucanas hatching on day 20. I should have my 2nd batch of Peacock eggs arriving in the mail tomorrow too. I sure hope they make it here all right, we'll find out. I had the one lady come today to pick up her 6 Ameraucana chicks she had asked for & she had all of her kids with her. The one son shows Mini Rex rabbits & he wanted to see mine. He also is going to show the Ameraucanas he's getting too for 4H, so that will be fun for him.

I'm just done in tonight, my DH was sick last night & coughed a lot of the night. I didn't get much sleep & then had to get up earlier than usual for this woman to pick up her chicks. At least she comes when she says she will. My son was supposed to come today, but I told him my DH was sick & so he didn't come by. I think he did go see his daughter though. I was sort of disappointed that he didn't come by here at all, but I also know he didn't have much time in town & is starting a new job so he didn't know when he will get back. I don't get to see him much any more since he moved to OKC.

Busy day! Because...

It's my birthday and yes, I think D-Day is appropriate for my arrival on the planet. No, no, not the same year just month and day!

Okay, so the very best thing I got for my birthday today is my very first egg!!!!!! It's one of the EE's eggs and it's a chalky blue/green -- so pretty!!!! It just doesn't get better than that for a crazy chicken lady!

Holy cow, this thread moves fast!
Lovely first egg, Karen! Good work on the coop Pikeman, and oh, that bite sounds painful, Trish! Was it a brown recluse?
Oh, and congrats on the broody and baby, crap, can't remember who it was now? Sorry, but cute baby!

OH I am so sorry I missed it yesterday! Congrats on your first egg, Karen, and better yet: Happy Happy Birthday, Karen!

Now belated of course.
By the time I got home yesterday and got the birds fed and watered it was after 7:00PM.DH wanted to go to town to eat. He took a shower and it was 9:15 before we got home. What a long day! I had gotten up at 6:00.
So then I was up at 6:30 this morning again. I've got to get Marshmallow wrangled and get her ready to go to the vet for her spaying after bit. I didn't try to pen her last night like I did the first time. I just removed the food bowl from all the dogs about midnight. I think it will be easiest to just get her to come in the house, give her her pill when the time comes and then handle her from there. DH is home this morning so he can help me get her in the truck. Wish I could count on her staying in the back. I know she would be much more comfortable riding in my car. I just can't have her crawling in front of my face while I'm driving.
I'm not even going to try to put her in the dog crate. It will just upset her worse.
DH hadn't fed or watered the birds when I got home yesterday, other than the K-state hens. They only got fed because they will follow you until you feed them and he was trying to work on the lawn mower. I would have thought he would have but no luck.
When we get back I've got to get eggs ready and get them to town and delivered.
I got the first delivery of peacock eggs yesterday. They arrived unbroken. I need to find time to move things in the incubators and unload the hatcher. I've got to make room. I have 2 dozen more eggs coming for a special project which I assume will arrive today. I could really use more me this week.
I wish I were going to be home this weekend. I need to get some birds sold but I'm just going to be gone too much.

What do you think? Gosling or duckling?

And my duckling: What do you think? Is s/he a swedish? Also, s/he has a spot on his wing that is more bare than the rest of him/her. Any ideas what could've caused that and if there's anything I can do about it?
Okay, you really need Danz to answer your duck questions... but I think your yellow one is a goose. Doesn't look like a duck to me.

No idea what your black duck is, but he's cute!! Congrats on the new additions! :)

Thanks, averytds for finding the fertile eggs for us! Nellie is a good mama and we are all having great fun watching the baby grow.
I hope your new knees heal up quickly for you. WOW-- you were brave having both knees done at the same time. How is that going? I can't imagine the pain you'd be in. Super cute picture of your hen and chick. Looks like she's great mama!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Karen!!! I had no idea your birthday was coming up! I'm glad you had such a great day and congrats on your first egg! Getting that first egg is soooo exciting! I know we can all relate!

Glad your turkey pen is done! I bet that feels good to have them outside and out of the brooder. I hope you have good luck with your lav Orps hatching! I did really well with my shipped silkie eggs. What kind of peacock eggs are you getting? Sorry your DH has been sick, and a bummer your son didn't come by. So what's the deal on this spider bite? Have you been to the Dr about it? I think I must have missed your first post about it and what happened. Did you wake up with it? I would be really concerned with it, as I'm sure you are.

Coop v2.0 update - I got the right side people door installed tonight. I hope I can get the left side door installed tomorrow and maybe get the roost completed. Once that is done I am at a point where I can move the girls into their new palace. Here is the update to the album:

Going to bed now.
Pikeman, looks like it's pretty much done!! You have moved fast on this one!! Bravo for such an incredibly cute coop!! Great job, it looks really well made and well thought out. I'm really loving it!

ooh, right, that's today!! Good luck with Marshmellow! I hope she eats down that pill no problem. I put pills in cheese and roll it into a ball and my dogs eat it right down. But I give them a couple pieces of cheese first so that if they are suspicious and they really bite into it, they will find nothing the first couple of times. By the time I give them the "loaded cheese" they just gulp it down without even biting down. Easy! My DH is the same way-- I could not count on him to do any feeding or much helping with the animals. I can't even remember the last time he fed anything. Including our inside dogs. So glad your peacock eggs arrived in good condition! What kind of peacock did you get??

Yeah, this weekend is kind of blown for me too. I was wanting to run up to Lawrence and deliver my brother's coop this Saturday, but my MIL has this big luncheon planned for the family. Sigh. So, I guess I'll be headed up to Lawrence next weekend instead. Which will be fine, too. I don't have the roof on yet, so I don't know how heavy it's going to be. I'm going to tell him he better round up a few friends to unload it, because I know I can't lift it. I'll probably wrangle my neighbor, my DH and my dad to load it into my truck.

I agree with Hawkeye, Lizzy. That yellow one looks like a goose.
I can't tell from your pictures if your new ducks are brown or black. That makes a difference. The duckling looks like it could be an cayuga except for the white marks in the feet. I would assume if the parents are brown it is what they are or a mix.The white duck could be an Ancona. They often have colored speckles on their beak and the top of their head along with some colored marks on their body. Wish you had close ups. Any of them of course could be crosses which changes everything.
Speaking of babies hens hatch out I seem to have them everywhere. These girls are expert at hiding their nests and then emerging with babies. I guess if DH would clean up his barn they wouldn't have so many placed to hide. I know of at least 2 more that are broody on nests. One in his shop and one in the raised part of the barn. The problem with these wild chicks is they are just that. They can run like crazy and you can't get close to them. I have no idea how I'll ever capture them to sell them. I wouldn't care, but that is more mouths to feed and I really need to eliminate a bunch of those mouths.
I'm truly serious about downsizing and getting more specific breeds. I just don't have the time or finances for all I have especially with all the game birds and fancies I have gotten.
I suppose I should get my skates on and start getting around to head to the vets office.

Oh Josie, I checked the gosling last night. For the first time I can now see some swelling in one of her knees. At least I know now where the problem lies. Do you think it could still be a vitamin deficiency or since it is in that one knee would it be an injury?

I folks! Sorry I've been missing in action. I've just been SUPER busy, and really preoccupied with some projects going on.

Happy Birthday Karen! Today is my oldest son's birthday, too! AND TOMORROW IS MY BIRTHDAY! But don't look for me on here.... I've got plans for sure. Also, I think it is time I start counting birthdays in REVERSE.

Wish I had time to reply to everyone, but gosh, the coop builders are doing great jobs, and congrats to all on the new hatches, newly aquired birds and first eggs.

Gotta run. I'll have to catch up later.
