Consolidated Kansas

Hi everyone. Does anyone on here within an hour or so of Kansas City have an ameraucana, EE, or auracana they are looking to rehome? All my EE chicks are looking like they are pullets (I know, such awful luck, lol), and I am needing to find a roo for them.

I'm not sure yet

. I've got 2 5 week Lavender Ameraucana chicks from eggs I bought from Nancy Geary (Bargain). One looks to be a male, and I'm still uncertain on the other one. If it's a pair, I'll likely keep them. If both are boys, well, they will be leaving. But I won't know for a month or so yet, and you probably want one before then. So I'm not much help. But I'm certain it won't be that hard for you to find an EE or Am roo around here.

Thanks. I'm thinking a roo should be easy to find too, and mine are only 11 weeks so not in a huge hurry. Just thought I'd check on here in case someone who couldn't have one was trying to find one a home.

So we had a fantastic afternoon! We went down to Yoder and signed up (a few months back) to have lunch with an Amish family in their home. They have a house they live in and then sort of another house-- it has two bedrooms, a nice big bathroom and then a HUGE living room/dining room. It was set up for 15 places and a lot of our extended family all met us down there for lunch. The Amish family cooked us a homestyle served dinner of chicken fried steak, pan fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, chicken stuffing, coleslaw, and then rasin pie and lemon merguine pie. (sp??) Iced tea, and coffee. I drank a gallon of both, I swear. I was sloshing. That coffee reminded me of my grandparents coffee-- can't put my finger on the taste of it, but unique. The entire dinner was to die for delicious! Then they talked a bit about their history (only because we asked) and then they hitched up one of their horses (Saddle Bred) to a buggy and took us all on rides! Then he got out an old Ford tractor and gave the kids and everyone wagon rides! LOL It was like a holiday! It was soooo fun! Here are the kids loaded up in between the home owner.

How neat! Toward the end of May, we ate at a place in Yoder. It's an Amish family and they do family-style meals in a separate building (I think it may have started life as a large garage). They don't allow English into their homes and they don't allow pictures. The food is amazing. My SIL set it up; she'd learned about it when her father had them all go there and eat. We had salisbury steak, meatballs with a barbecue type glaze, mashed potatoes and gravy, the best corn ever, cole slaw (topped with cheese; never seen that before), bread with butter and strawberry jam, tapioca butterscotch pudding with bananas, Nestle Tollhouse pie and lemon meringue pie. All the tea, water and coffee we wanted. I know I probably forgot some things. We didn't get a buggy ride

, but DH did decide he wants some Gold Star chickens next time we get chickens. I have no idea when that might be, since we really don't have room for more. He raved and raved about the big eggs they had for sale! Sounds like your Amish family was a little less strict. How did you find out about setting up a lunch?

Hawkeye your day sounded wonderful. What fun!
Well I got home about 11pm last night and I'm up and going again. I am getting too old to go all the time. I am ready to chill for sure.
Maybe this afternoon when I get home I can feed the birds and relax a little.
I think I'll let Marshmallow out of the kennel this afternoon and let her come sleep in the house. She really has been good for being stuck out there. I think the worst part for her is not being able to come jump in my lap when I come home and open the car door. She always stands at the door waiting for it to open so she can get some special petting.
I've got the veteracyn here but it would cost a fortune to treat Marshmallow's skin. I'd have to use a bottle at a time and I'm not sure that would cover her with all that undercoat. I guess as long as she doesn't scratch her stitches out we'll be ok. In a week I can start her meds.
I had a fairly good time at my son's little party last night but as always I felt a bit out of my element with the people I didn't know well.
I do wish I could have stayed and helped them plant peonies today. I brought way too much potato salad home. I guess it will become chicken feed eventually.
I sat up a big styro container on the front porch and put a bag of ice in it for the eggs. I was writing a note to the mailman when they pulled up. So I ran out and got the box and exchanged it for a couple dozen eating eggs. The box was crashed in but this guy had those eggs packed for a nuclear holocaust. I hope he didn't suffocate them with all that packing. I only had time to dig out the egg cartons and set them on the counter. I didn't get the eggs unwrapped until this AM. Some of them are 10-11 days old so I doubt they will hatch but he sent plenty.

Yes, this family had a large metal house/barn/garage? It had two bedrooms and a bathroom and an AMAZING kitchen in there. They were really laid back and allowed us to take pictures and showed off this really neat saw they had on the wall and he wanted to get it down for the men in our group to look at closely. I'm pretty sure they live in that house we were at. My MIL heard about this family, so I don't know how she did. But somehow she was able to call them or something like that. They didn't have a phone, so I don't know how she called them. I think they had to drive down into town to use the phone. They had a little farm on the outskirts of Yoder and had their horses, land out back behind the house. They had two houses close together, as the other home was their family that lived next door. Their last name really was Yoder! The husband was telling us that his wife (who was listening) had a restaurant and owned it and ran it for about 15 years before they moved here to Yoder. They lived in another establisment in Oklahoma, I think where they ran the restaurant. Anyway, so she does these dinners/lunches to supplement their income. It really wasn't that expensive to pay, and i bought her cook book that she put together for Amish meals-- a lot of really neat meals and breads, etc are in there. She gave credit to 8 other women that contributed recipes in the cookbook at the front. It it a really nice spiral bound, and it's got a good collection of stuff in there. I don't have anything like it. I want to grow potatoes now, they put them in everything-- almost all their breads!! And in puddings, etc..

That's great that your eggs arrived before you left! Less worry that way! I hope those older eggs will still hatch, you never know!

Wow! I'm sure I will miss a few things. I just hate being gone and having to catch up.

Hawkeye-I LOVE the greenhouses made from doors. How unique and creative! Sounds like you had a great little mini vacation.

Trish-How's that spider bite doing by now?

Danz-So glad Marshmallow made it through her surgery okay. Yes, that is LOT of eggs. I think I would pare down by selling some birds and use the money to build that fence you want. Bummer about the mower. I just hate mechanical problems.

All you horse people..... you are making me so envious! I just LOVE to ride, but with my bad knees, I can't even push myself up on a horse. I think you would have to lift me up with a crane and drop me on from above. Once I bend my knee far enough to get my foot in the stirrup I have no power to push myself up! I miss being able to ride. It's always been one of the major loves of my life.

We just got home at 1:00 this morning. Fun and interesting trip. Celebrated my birthday, Checoukan's anniversary, several other birthdays and another anniversary. Did some sightseeing and Checoukan fixed up a big fish fry.

Thank you to everyone for the nice birthday wishes.

..........................AND>>>>>DH and I found a place where we want to move. We both fell in love with it. However, I am not sure the deal will go through. The seller may back out. Time will tell, but it is going to be a very busy time for us getting our place ready to sell, and all the other things we will need to do. I will be going back to work tonight for the first time since my knee surgery, so I hope that goes well.

Due to the move I will be selling down on some of my birds. I haven't decided which ones will be available, but I will post it once I know. Some are already spoken for, so I need to see just what I want to keep and what will have to go. I am really excited and hope the deal works out.

I, too, am suprised he allowed his pic to be taken. We know a great Amish family. Sam butchers my chickens and his wife sells the best pies I have ever tasted! They are the sweetest couple I have ever met. I didn't know that they didn't allow English in their homes. We have been in Sams several times. They have a little outhouse/shed building out by the road that they keep a cell phone in that they share with one of the farms across the street. So when you call and leave a message they will call you back. Where was this place you went Hawkeye?

IVY, it sounds like you had a very nice birthday. I hear you on not being able to get up on a horse, my knees are so bad I'm with you they would have to have a big crane to lift me up & drop me on the horse, poor animal. I'm eventually looking at having to get new knees myself. I only hope when the time comes I can do even half as well as you have, I think you have done amazingly well. My spider bite is doing much, much better & the other spots that came up are all dried up & are fading now. I'm just wondering if it's possible to get a sort of burn on your skin from the venom. If the spider was in my shoe & got smashed in there & there was poison on the shoe that got on my foot I just wonder if that could happen. I haven't ventured to put those shoes back on again since that happened. I think I will clean them out with some vinegar to see if it gets rid of any residue in there. I wear those garden shoes whenever I go outside, so I hate to not be able to use them any more, they weren't cheap. That sounds exciting about the place you found too, I hope it works out for you. I didn't think you wanted to move that soon, but if you found a place you love then you have to grab it when you can.

Hawkeye, I wonder how you can arrange a meal & tour like you had, that sounds like a lot of fun. I was telling my DH about it & he kind of looked interested. Of course he works most Saturdays, so it's hard for us to plan much of anything.

Danz, I'm so glad you got your eggs all right, I hope they hatch for you. I'm wondering about the Welsummer eggs I got, they got some really rough treatment getting here. Oh, I was going to tell you that I candled the peacock eggs in the cabinet incubator & saw growth I think in all 4, it was only a week, so it's still early. I'll let you know how the ones in the Brinsea do that I'm hand turning. The guy I got them from is very interested in how they do also. He wrote me & asked how they arrived & wants pics when they hatch. That's nice when people are so interested in the eggs they sell, not just the money.

I made a flying trip to Wichita yesterday evening to do my shopping at Sam's & then bought more groceries at Wal Mart. I didn't get home until after 11 last night & hadn't done all my chores. I had fed the chickens & put them up, but didn't have time to do anything else & make it in time to get up there before Sam's closed, so I had to do it later. The animals were all pretty upset with me.

I put two more Ameraucana chicks out in the brooder today & have 3 more eggs in the hatcher. I think I have about 21 more eggs in the incubator & then I'm done for this year unless someone requests chicks. I hadn't planned to hatch all summer, so I made the stop date the end of June. I have to focus on building my breeder coop anyway. I think my DH is going to finish up with leveling & squaring up the foundation today & then we can start getting wood & actually building, I can't wait!

Ivy, on not being able to get up onto a horse, that's what mounting blocks are for!! I haven't mounted from the ground in YEARS. The horse I ride is probably 16 hands, and even though I'm tall, I couldn't get up on him anymore. You CAN ride, just use something to help you get up there
