Consolidated Kansas

Yeah Trish this little guy yells a lot. He does quiet down once in while now. I still haven't seen him eat or drink on his own. He has absolutely no interest in my pecking finger. I gave them oatmeal and cooked egg yolk that was moistened last night. The other chicks cleaned up on it. I am thinking about trying to find some small bug and bring it in for him to see if it peaks his interest. Not sure I really want to drag bugs in the house but I guess it's a place to start. I am sure I could get him a Walk. You all know what a walk is don't you??
hat's a fly, you pull it's wings off and it becomes a walk.

I have so much to do today. I jut hate starting off the day feeling stressed about all I have to get done.Nothing like beginning a day with a feeling of dread.
It looks like the weather may finally cool after this weekend. Maybe I can finally get some of these hens and pullets sold. That's sure help.
Karens, you know you can come any time you want. I was tickled to have you here. Wish you could have stayed longer.
I just ordered two fence chargers. I couldn't make up my mind which to get and they were cheap so I ordered both of them. One is AC and the other is DC. If I can get these hens sold soon I'll go ahead and order that electric poultry netting I want. It is currently back ordered so maybe it will be in stock by then.

oh my! I have no idea what happened to my blinkie!! But I finally figured it out-- I had realized I had uploaded the blinkie twice to photobucket last night. So I went back and deleted one and kept the other. Duh... the one I deleted must have been the one that was linked here. Sigh. I swear, I don't know where my brain is sometimes!

I was trying to fool around with putting chickens in it... and I like pink.

Pikeman, great that you have started on the roof! Let us know when you get pics put up! :)

Karen, so neat that you got to visit Danz!

Danz, so glad your pea is eating!! Definitely good news! One less worry about him. OKay, that was funny about the "walk"-- never heard of that!! ha!

Trish, I sure hope your little guy is eating when you're not watching. :(

I really like the pink chickens. I think the orange blinky with pink chickens would be cool. Can you try that one? I need to start moving around but I'm still sitting here drinking coffee and doing nothing.
I have to get up early and be at KCI Airport by 9:30 in the morning. Ugh! I guess the chickens may wait until I get back home to get fed and watered. I sure won't have time to do it before I leave. I can't believe how exited I am about my granddaughter coming to visit. She is at that stage between half little kid and half young adult. You never know if she is going to be super juvenile or super grown up. She has been working as a counselor at horse camp this summer. I think it has been really good for her. She tends to lack some self confidence. Of course that is to be expected being the youngest of three girls. She got to work with smaller children and help teach them to ride.
My granddaughters are all very much into professional riding. I'm not quite sure I get it. Why do you have to wear special clothing and sit up so perfectly straight etc etc just to ride a horse?? Maybe Hawkeye or one of those other horse enthusiast people can explain that. It seems to me it would take the pleasure out of riding. I don't understand the formality at all. I just hate being totally dumb on a subject.'
Hawkeye when is your first poultry show? Is just your oldest competing?
Best of luck on that. I am sure your silkies will be prize winners. They're definitely the best I've ever seen.

I just spent some time candling eggs to make a little more room in the incubators and to move some eggs to the hatcher.. What a huge disappointment. Not a single egg out of my last dozen of lavender orpingtons developed. They didn't cost me anything but he guy that shipped them spent a bunch of $$ on postage. So then I checked some other eggs. Out of 24 lemon cuckoo eggs I only have 10 that might be viable. They;ve got another week before hatch. Shipped eggs just don't do well. I swear they must drop kick every darn box of eggs that goes through the processing center. I really want to get some more lavender orpingtons cause I only have 5 of them but unless I would happen to find some chicks someplace I would probably just wait until later this summer to even try eggs again. I would much rather have the birds similar in age but with the heat I just don't see it working.

I used to show Horsemanship and Western Pleasure. You won't believe all the ins and outs of the outfit. Usually each season has a brim specification for your hat-- most honestly, that stays about the same for a good couple of years. Anyway, I have a Stetson and I forget the other hat I have-- but the brim would need to be steamed and redone every couple of years to stay "in style" and current with the trend of the hat. The hat must stay on at all times, and girls should have their hair up in a net or secured in some way (I think braids were okay when I was doing it). The clothes should be button up (or some are getting away with the newer snap versions on their shirts), and a lot of people match their jeans to their shirts. I always wore chaps, too, the more showy you are, the more the judge is going to look at you, and that's what you want! I prefer pointed toes on my boots, and that's another trend-- with the blunted off flat toed boots. (which I think could be dangerous since the whole point is the slide your boot in easily into the stirrups). I'm old fashioned in that thinking with the boots. I'm sure in the long run it doesn't really matter. Like you said, there is a way you should hold yourself when you are riding. I have it down to perfection! LOL Back straight and your chin up enough so that your eyes are looking straight ahead-- my coach always told me to find a post or a "goal"down the arena to look at. If you are swiveling your head or looking around, you get deducted. Don't drop your shoulders, and don't touch your saddle horn. The right hand holds both reins over the top of the horn, and any sliding of the reins or direct reining must be done on the sly with walking your fingers up and down the reins-- hopefully unnoticed. All reining is supposed to be indirect reining (neck pressure-- but only slightly!) If the judge catches you really yanking on the reins, you're probably out. The left arm is supposed to be "resting" (haha) at a 90 degree angle --not touching anything, definitely not touching your legs, etc. It goes on and on... I know all the rules and know how to do them. Your heels should be DOWN in the stirrups. Even if your knees and feet are at the wrong angle, you can be deducted. And this is just for the rider! I won't even get into all the things the horse must accomplish-- like when the judge calls for a trot, you must be in a trot in 3 counts.. 1, 2, 3, Trot. Same with a canter. And the slower the trot and the slower the canter, the better you show. Heads must be down and necks level with their backs... There is a LOT of practice that goes into this. We set up an arena at our place when I was a kid and I would practice almost every day working on getting my horses to slow down and get the right form. I had a coach for 5 or 6 years that would constantly yell at me if I dropped my back or shoulders, or if I wasn't looking in the right place or whatever the case might be.

Aren't you sorry you
asked! LOL

Thank you about my silkies!! So sweet! We take the birds down on the 11th of this month and then they are judged the next day. They will be on exhibit from the 11th- 14th. I'll be sure to take plenty of pictures and post them here! :)

OH no!! So sorry about all those lavender orpingtons! So sad! But if you have 5-- you could triple that if you wait on them to lay themselves. I'd be tempted to get more too, though. I think the PO is very rough on packages. I don't know why!

I guess I can hope that these babies are all girls but one. Fat chance! But it would be a nice starting group. I've spent so much on hatching eggs recently, even though I swore I never would again, that I feel like I must at least get something to show for it. I found a breeder of lavenders in Kansas and hope to hear back from them. Maybe they have some chicks. Of course I can't afford the prices most people demand on lavenders. The lemons are higher but if these make it I will should enough for a good start. I guess that is to be expected when you get into the fancy import blood lines.
Yeah I'm still a bit baffled by all that riding stuff. You don't ride like that normally do you? My granddaughters do and it just seems to stiff and formal to be any fun.

So sorry about the eggs Danz! Yeah, I'm with you - I have no interest in show-riding either. My niece is a jumper and I've been to some of her competitions and its pretty cool but I am strictly a pleasure/trail rider. I enjoy it just for the social aspect of getting out with my friends and riding for an hour or two several times a week. We chat and catch up on what has been happening in each other's lives, enjoy a few little canters and call it good. Most times I wear my jean shorts, my riding boots, a ball cap, and a t-shirt. Quite a sight to see, I'm sure, but its comfortable and the horse doesn't care

Wow, Hawkeye, that was exhausting just reading through that! I don't think I'd operate well under the pressure of having to remember all of those details all at the same time

Danz-Sorry about your eggs. If it is any consolation I candled my pea fowl eggs last night and it doesn't look like anything is happening. There is one that is darker but I am afraid it is something undesirable growing in there.

What a waste. I am so frustrated. Should have just bought pea chicks, DH always says if you really want it just by chicks, at least then you know you will have some!

I have got to get this ceiling done today. The stain fumes are killing me. It stinks in here. I can't imagine what the cats must think! I wish I had somewhere to move them but that isn't an option. Well, I am off to do some stuff! Everyone stay cool today!
