Consolidated Kansas

Danz, that is just awful. I know he is a good neighbor but I think I would have to tell him his dogs aren't welcome there any more. Hopefully he will understand, although I know how people can be. My neighbor at my old house has two little mini-doxies that she thinks walk on water. I have always dog-sat for her when she goes out of town but the female doxie would go after my chickens if I took her in the backyard so I reached the point I had to take her out to potty in the front yard. And of course she's not leash trained and I had the worry of her running off out there. So I didn't really get that excited when she asked me to dig-sit but she was so good about reciprocating I felt I couldn't turn her down.

Perhaps you can deliver eggs to him in the future?

Okay, we just got back! I clerked for the judge along with the Superintendent who showed me how to direct the judge and keep him on task and what he needs to judge for. It was complicated than I thought, because we had so many Opens and they are judged on a different scale, and then get different ribbons and then must be judged against the class. So we ended up having all these different divisions. I'm sure Checoukan will be doing the same thing and totally understands what I'm talking about. But it took me a while to get the hang of what the heck the judging system was for Open. Anyway, next year, she said I'm going to do it myself and I told her-- no way!! I said she's going to have to come back and show me again to be sure I have it down! LOL Anyway, this judge was HARD. Practically no one got Purples and Blues were hard to come by too. I was glad he was judging very carefully.

Anyway, the the results were kind of what I expected on my birds, but I was surprised about my rooster. However, he gave me a great talk on silkies and he really knows what he's doing--he judges in several other states, so it looks like I'm going to phase Zorro out next year for a smaller bird (not so tall) and one with a smaller comb). I hope I have several little roosters growing up in my pen!! Wouldn't it be my luck not to get any roosters when I desperately need two or three for next year?? LOL Oh-- Zorro got a Red placing in featherleg, my Blue hen got a Red (her backside is torn up --feathers are missing-- I was complaining about that before we left). BUT.... our little pullet got a Purple!!! WhooHOO!!!! He was super stingy with Purples... He said she would have been in the running for BV if she had been older and had her cushion grown in. A Rosecomb featherleg got RV and another beautiful little silkie cockerel got BV. As it was, she is only 4 months and not much of a cushion. So that is the show report.

Danz, I dont think I'd let that little dog come back, did the guy feel bad about it at all?? I would have been horrified!!!

Josie-- don't worry about the pink toe right now. Give it another 2-3 weeks. It should darken up. If not, then that's bad, and it simply has a hole in it's pigment, which you can't use. BUT--- I've read a lot about pink toes, and it seems that for some reason, that can be a hatching issue and some kind of blood flow/pigment thing and it's likely it will darken up. I've never had that happen to me, but it seems that this is a common occurance. Give it some time before you ditch it... unless it has other toe faults.

HeChicken, do you think the new dog was going to eat the chicken? I wonder if there is a way to introduce her to the birds and let her get close and yet not eat them!?

Congrats hawkeye95 maybe one day my ds will be interested in 4-h. someone was selling some silkies in my area i thought about getting some but i wanted to make sure that the chickens we had now would make it. Plus i was wanting to wait till my DH got to kansas so he can help out picking what our next critter would be on our little Ranch.

Here is a picture of our little flock they are doing good they seem happy and growing fast. Not so great picture sense they don't want to stay still

Hi all, It has been a long time since I have been on byc. I need some help I was given a 4-5 week old pheasant I am not set up to take care of it, Is there anyone here in Kansas that would like this little one will be willing to meet and take it for me. Thanks for any help.

Welcome back Schellie69. First of all what kind of pheasant is it? Secondly where are you located. I raise three different kinds of pheasant.
I've been out sweating like a hog and putting up two pens side by side to put turkey in at least for now. I had to put netting on top as well which took a lot longer than putting up the kennel panels. I still need to move a little house over for the second pen. I was watering the poor dead flower bed while I was doing this. I had to move my blue slate turkeys in the rain.Just had a little storm pop up from no where and it is raining. Not hard but thank God it is rain!!!!!!! It could last a week and I would be thrilled.
It's been so long since we saw rain I almost forgot what it felt like.
It will postpone me moving my turkeys outside but that is just fine. I still need to clean out a bin and put shavings in it for the ordered batch of turkeys. Plus I need to find another bin to put my new lemon cuckoos that are hatching in. I haven't even had time to check progress but I did see there were several hatched.
I really thought you would do better than that Hawkeye. I think you have the prettiest silkies I've ever seen. Congratulations on your wins. In time you will know exactly what the judges want.
You should feel very proud that you've been getting asked to do all these extra things for them. That shows they recognize that you are a serious show person and not just someone who goes and buys a bird a couple months before the fair and sticks it in a cage. You Go Girl!

Thank you Danz! I was really disappointed about my rooster. He had the worst critique. I know his comb is on the large side, but I had no idea that the judge would think he was too big of a boy. I thought he was just fine. So that just shows how much I need to learn! I'm apparently going to have to cull a little harder than I thought! He didn't have anything bad to say about his type (over all form and S shape). But it's a bummer and I feel like I'm starting over again. I'm going to hope the chicks I hatched from the other breeder in CA will have some nice cockerels in there and they will be SMALLER. Sigh.

Oh, and I could be doing this job by default--- I'm not sure anyone else showed any interest in it. In fact-- *I* didn't even say I would do it. Remember a few months ago, I was talking to the 4-H office and they said they were looking for more poultry people and asked if I would do it? I said I'd "think about it". Apparently they took that to men "yes".

But the lady does seem very happy with me so far. I just hope I don't mess anything up.

Hey-- lucky you on that rain!!! Wish we'd have a rain storm suddenly pop up here! It's insane how dry it is.

You would really love 4-H. Looks like a bunch of happy birds there! Be sure if you are going to get some silkies, that you try to get some nice looking ones.
