That sounds positive - I will keep her in my thoughts and hope that she doesn't have any internal injuries. Poor Fern! You know, it makes me crazy how fast people drive along these country roads. This morning DS and I were on our front porch and a guy in a pick up went screaming along the road in front of our house - at 6:30 in the morning. Apart from the speed and the dust he threw up, the noise of that diesel engine was way too much for that hour of the morning. I told DS, I wish we could put spikes in the road and just push a button to raise them when someone is going that fast, but leave them lowered for the considerate drivers. Bwahahaha.

Ha - I think I am more evil than you... I want to buy one of those toddler-sized dolls and toss it in front of a speeding car. Could you imagine thinking you hit a child!

I don't have good news to share this morning. Fern was hit by a car last night. She is at the vet now being assessed with IV/pain med/etc. The vet believes she does have a back broken leg. He will first get her comfortable and stable, then check for any internal injuries, then deal with the broken leg.

I'm heart broken. I'm feeling so horribly guilty thinking about how much I'm willing to spend.. but wanting everything done for her too... I didn't sleep well last night - I brought her in the house and she and I laid on the living room floor together all night long.. she had rapid respiration off and on through the night - she drank often as I offered a bowl of water. I feel I should have done more...

Sunflower im so sorry about fern. My heart breaks for you just having this happen too us also its so scary. I pray that she has a speedy recovers.

its its credit they give you for medical, vet bills look into it and see if they can help

Hechicken, I meant to mention last night I watched a Dirty Jobs show that was filmed in Australia. It was about a person that caught the brown snakes for a living. The town they were at, I believe it was in southern Australia was said to have more venomous snakes than any place else in the world. Then the went to the other side of the country and were catching poison cane toads. The whole thing made me feel pretty good about my one rattlesnake I found here......even though I haven't located him again yet.
I don't know if I'd sell without a realtor unless you had an attorney to draw up a contract, someone who had done it before. We had to meet with the title company at the beginning of this thing and pay a fee, split between the buyer and myself. Then when they make the final payment we have to do the same again. Then the title has to be filed with the court. Other than the title thing the attorney is handling the thing. He just basically wrote up a contract that we all signed similar to what a realtor would do when they complete the sale.
My sister tried to sell her house with and without a realtor but it still hasn't sold. They are wanting way too much for it as it is. If they would do a little cosmetic work to part of the outside and lower their price by at least $20,000 I think they could sell it.
Real estate has bottomed out over the last few years. The only reason my property has held it's value is because of the land that came with it.

We are all at risk of our dogs (or any of our animals really) of becoming seriously injured due to their country environment. If not a car, it could be a bobcat or coyotes or even just a trauma during running.. tractors, 4-wheelers, ditches, swamps, snakes, etc..

Oh yeah, Australia has more things that will try to kill you than anywhere else in the world. Even the rocks are poisonous! (Well, not really, but there is a fish called a Rock Fish that looks for all the world like a rock sitting on the ocean floor but it has deadly spines and if you stand on it.....) I was actually born because of a brown snake. My mum was overdue with me when her neighbor screamed that there was a brown snake on her back verandah. My mum went hurrying over there to help her kill it and went into labor immediately afterward

As a kid, we went on vacation to north Queensland, where Cane Toads had only recently been imported. We had great fun playing with them, no clue they were "nasties". My poor mother had a conniption when she came outside our rental house up there to find the kids all cuddling their very own cane toad LOL.

Another time when I was quite young, Grandpa took me for a walk along the beach and I found a cute "baby" Octopus crawling along the sand. I picked it up and was holding it in my hand calling "Hey Grandpa, look what I found". The blood drained from his face as he realized I was holding a very angry, very adult (it is a small breed so I thought it was a baby) Blue-Ringed Octopus. They are quite poisonous also, but I set it down gently and it never bit me or whatever they do. They are usually somewhat dull in color but have rings on their tentacles that will turn bright blue when they are angry and getting ready to attack.

I dunno....when you grow up with deadly creatures all around you just have to take it in stride, I think. I still wouldn't want an encounter with a rattler though - their fangs look huge and apart from the poison, I'm thinking the bite would be pretty painful. At least most of our snakes have the courtesy to deliver their poison from fairly small, innocuous looking fangs, so the bite itself isn't too painful

I just think we all need to remember that everyone has their own set of circumstances & try not to judge anyone without knowing all of them. I think we all on this thread are animal lovers or we wouldn't be here & I think we all would do anything we could to protect & care for your animals & birds. There are so many things that can happen to our pets outside & it's not always in our power to protect them from everything, we do the best we can but things still happen. We feel awful when they do just as we would with any other member of our family, just saying.

I went out awhile ago & finished up putting on the hardware cloth & chicken wire on the sides of my hoop coop & am now out of hardware cloth. The part I have left is the front & I measured & will need a little over 15 feet to do the front beside the door & the door. I'm going to use 2x2s to make the door, just like the one you showed in your pic Danz. We have a door just like that one on our chicken coop run. I already have the hinges I think for the door, I just need door materials. I can't wait to get this coop done so I can move my peahens in there & go pick up my peacock. I would like to get this all done before I go to KC so that if I find another little peachick up there I will have a nice pen for it to go in. Danz, did I read that you're going to get the little peachicks? What color are these? I really wouldn't mind getting some other color too, even white. The white ones we saw in Puerto Rico were pretty. They had peacocks all over the place at the hotel we stayed at there. We went there & spent the night before boarding our ship the next day for a cruise, it was so beautiful there right on the ocean with all of those peacocks walking around.

Well I need to get myself moving, I've got to get out & feed everyone & then get around to go pick up my granddaughter. I was asked to take her to soccer practice tonight since her sister has a volleyball game at the same time. Have a good evening everyone! Oh & Jasmine still won't get near me, she's majorly upset with me, I guess I'm being blamed for her having to go to the Vet & have surgery. She will come to my DH but not me now.

I talked on the phone with the vet and was given the following information: The first 24 hours were very critical and we just surpassed those hours! Fern was in severe shock and that shock is what needed to be treated first before anything else could even be considered. Even though she is off the IVs and is drinking and peeing, he is still concerned about her slipping back into shock if he causes her any discomfort or pain. (She is on pain medication). Tomorrow afternoon, he will assess the leg and will call me and discuss options. He does not believe she has any internal injuries due to her behavior and lack of symptoms. I am going to go visit her in the morning with my brother and R (the young lady that lives with me). I bawled when I got off the phone with the vet and feel some relief and cannot wait to get that little thief on the road to recovery But, she's still not 100% out of the woods... but reaching that percentage more and more as every hour passes. Poor little baby girl.

I will let everyone know what I find out tomorrow. I cannot cannot cannot cannot cannot wait to go see her tomorrow! I will keep the visit short and sweet so not to excite her...

I thought it would have been kind of nice if all the sisters were in the vet's at the same time Kind of like a day late and a dollar short!

Sunflower, I hope Fern is OK. I had a dog hit by a car and it's a horrible feeling. You can't do anything except hope your vet knows and cares. My (now ex) vet was unconcerned and couldn't be bothered to let us know anything that was going on; we had to browbeat his assistant into talking to us at one point. Sounds like you have a much better situation for Fern and I'll keep my fingers crossed for her quick recovery.

Oh Sunflower, that is just wonderful news! I am so glad the vet got back in touch with you. Now hopefully you can get some rest tonight and maybe by morning she'll be completely out of the woods! I am glad that the vet is taking precautions too. Keep the prayers going. God cares for all creatures!
I meant to say Trish, that I took out Marshmallow's stitches and she didn't even notice. It sure beat loading her back in the car and driving for 30 minutes each direction while wrestling her. I just snipped and pulled. I had tweezers to pull with but didn't need them. I actually just used my fingertips. I've had enough surgeries and had stitches removed so I wasn't doubting in the least I could do it. Then it was easier than I ever thought. I am allergic to external stitches so mine were always kind of stuck and hurt when they pulled them. Not the case with hers, they slid right out.

Heather I guess you must get used to those kind of things. I suppose you just learn to live with whatever is around you. One lady had seen a brown snake out back and had called to have it removed. It wasn't there when they got there, but they noticed a crack under the back door. They asked if she had had any mice recently and she said she had in her pantry. Sure enough they discovered the deadly snake in the house in the pantry. Reach for a can of beans and die 14 minutes later!!
I'm sure there are things here that would terrify people from elsewhere. Heavens I have things out here on the farm that terrify my city born and raised daughter in law. It is hard to imagine living with so many deadly creatures on a regular basis though.
I hatched 2 Serama chicks in the incubator and the hens hatched at least 3 of them today.
DH was moving stuff in the barn and found nearly 6 dozen red star eggs that had been laid in three hidey hole places. So I have a bunch of eggs to incubate. I could have really used those for my customers. Silly girls really need to learn where they are supposed to be laying! since I sold the chicks I hatched earlier I don't mind. Maybe I'll take the time to learn to vent sex by the time they hatch.
I had to ask some other people what color these peachicks would be considered and haven't gotten the answer back yet. I am still going to look for another young white one if they have any at the gardner auction. I've never seen any peachicks there before. Everything has been at least a yearling, but I can still hope. I didn't hear back from the guy who has them again, so it will be Monday again before I can contact him. I was really hoping to get them this weekend. But he only works Monday through Thursday.
