Consolidated Kansas

I think it's a macho thing! "Look what I caught!"
Or Maybe it's a message......."Look what happened to the last darned cat fish that crossed this fence line!!! No catfish trespassing!"

Well it is a very sad morning here at the bird zoo! I am ready to cry. I went out to feed and water and found all kinds of bad effects from the storm yesterday I failed to see last evening. All of my button quail drowned. They only have a half inch deep tray in their pens but that storm blew in from the northwest with 60 mph winds which put it directly in their pen. I think it was too strong for them. I also lost 5 baby guineas . They were in a pen on the west side of the hen house in the best protected area they could be in,but I guess the wind drove the rain right through the hardware cloth. It had a wood bottom and top but it was obviously too much for them.
I moved some young roos back into the brooder house cause they got wet and chilled and they were fine.
But the worst of all and I did check them after the storm was I lost one of my midget white turkeys. I think she must have got crowded by the others in their tiny house and gotten suffocated. It just breaks my heart. We are going to get those stinking pens up on that building if it kills me. At least my turkeys would have shelter then.
Then to top off the rest I have 600 pounds of feed that got soaked because the lids blew off the containers. We have it laid out on a trailer so hopefully it will dry and not mold.
Trish I feed my peafowl what the other birds eat. They aren't crazy about it. They love cucumbers and melons. And I am sure they would love bugs if some would happen to show up. I've given them some game bird chow but they don't seem interested. They totally love peanuts, bread, sunflower seeds, etc. So maybe giving them a little wild bird seed would work well. I also gave them some bean plants that didn't produce and they really enjoyed eating those. The guy I got my adults from fed his dog food and scraps but they free ranged all the time too.

On no ... I'm so sorry.

My thinking is that they survived because they weren't expected to produce an egg a day. It is producing all of those eggs that makes them need to much nutrition. We could cut down on the calories but then they wouldn't have the reserves needed to lay eggs but every once in a while.

We've also dinked with their genetics breeding for this trait or that, and that often affects other aspects of their health and hardiness.

Can any Kansan here explain to me the meaning /purpose of hanging large Catfish heads from barbed wire fences ?? Decor? Trophies ??

I have (thankfully) never seen such a thing. I can't imagine the purpose. Seems like it would lure in critters you might not want to lure in, though.

I had been thinking this might be the year to go to the fair since it's a little cooler. We only go about once every 5-7 years. We decided today that it probably wouldn't be a good idea for me to go since my foot isn't getting better. When I was sick 3 weeks ago, I apparently did something to it while I was sleeping in the recliner. It got better enough that I can put it flat on the floor when I walk, but it hasn't really improved since then. It still hurts most of the time when I walk on it, and at some point in the afternoon it really hurts and starts throbbing. I have an appointment with the foot doc Monday. Hopefully it's not another stress fracture.

Over Labor Day weekend, someone stole quite a bit of the wood we have stacked across the alley and stole a gas can from our neighbor. We were sitting on the deck this evening watching chickens. Some kids came walking through the alley, three boys about 14-16 years old I'd guess. I don't know if they're the thieves, but we've started to have a lot of people walking through the alley at all hours of day and night, so we just let Gypsy run along the fence and bark at them. They completely ignored her, but one picked up a small rock from the alley and made a move like he was going to throw it at a chicken. Then he saw us and went on down the alley. I guess we need to plant something thick right there at the edge of alley where the chicken fence is so people can't just look in or throw things.

I got there just after 10, so we could have crossed paths. It is possible that the other silkies weren't there yet. The one I saw was on the end of the row, and he had a mulberry comb. I can't speak to the walnut part because I'm not sure I understand the difference.

It was a great experience to see all the birds. I finally saw a porcelain in person (spectacular color, almost indescribable) and a dominique (sp?), so it was a valuable day for me.

OMG! I wonder if we were in at the poultry building at the same time? We were looking at birds around 11am or around then. We hit up the horses, swine, sheep and rabbits first. There were more than just one white silkie-- there were probably about 4 of them! Then there were a lot of Blues and a few AOV's-- all of the silkies except for the one white rooster were a very good quality bird. The white rooster had a red rosecomb, which is the wrong color (should be mulberry) and the wrong type of comb-- should be a Walnut. But the other silkies I was impressed with! I wonder if they hadn't been cooped in when you were there. I noticed they were still cooping in a lot of birds when we were walking thru the barn. Those BO's you saw were definitely not hatchery quality birds! The first show I went to had the BO's that large and the larger the better. They are the size of medium dogs!! They are HUGE! There is some guy up in Jefferson County that breeds very nice ones and I bet a lot of people get their nice ones from him! :) I agree-- the textiles this year was really great! My DH and I love looking at the quilts. But unfortunately we had to move out of there before we got to look at much because the kids were wanting to run around everything. I'd say for the most part they behaved, but we did have a few moments!

Wow... The fair birds sound like Jules Verne breeds :) I wish we could go. Our buff Orpington is a character. If she were bigger, she might run the house!

Cherwill, I hope your foot is feeling better! Foot pain is no fun, for whatever reason.

Our week has been a bit crazy. Reading all of Karen's kids activities made me feel a bit better though! Karen, you are my hero! I cannot imagine.... 3 in two different schools and my job have be exhausted daily. My oldest has been really sick this week, so add that in and I have no brain left at the end of the day.

We will be getting a few chicks soon for Andy. We can't wait to play with them:) HEChicken, I know why you endured the little claws :)

We have still been egg hunting to no avail. Our white rock, Splash silkie and d'uccle are the only ones laying and the white rock skipped 11 days and has now skipped 2 more between eggs. My kids (and I) keep checking for blue and brown eggs... But it seems the more we check, the more those Marans and EE and ameracauna laugh at us!:). I snapped this pic of two of them standing at the gate as I left the coop- cackling at me.

Ah well.... They are funny at least!

Just got home and got the birds fed and feed shoveled back in the barrells.I still need to water everyone. Some days I swear the day is over before it began.
We had a nice dinner at church today so that took me a little longer than usual, then I spent some time visiting my Dad. Sometimes I do wish my chores were a lot more manageable so I would have time to chill. Either that or have the energy I used to have. I NEVER sat down and relaxed when I still had kids at home.
I still need to transfer some eggs, then I need to go out and see if I can help DH set poles. I really wish he could get them in today. I could hang fence tomorrow. That's a pipe dream though. I also need him to look at my car. Not having air conditioning bites.

Awww Sunflowerparrot, she looks so happy! I will have to come see her in the next few days along with your new chicks. I don't think that splint slows her down too much. I wish we could get the sisters side by side.
