How cute is that? Is she better?

Sharol, she spent 7 nights at the vet.. she has a dislocated ankle, broken tibia and a cracked bone under her hip. She is in a Thomas splint.. she came home 4 days ago and is doing very well. I also had her spayed while she is there so she wouldn't have to go through more healing again in the near future - figured to get it all done at once. She is on antibiotics and baby Asprin 2x daily for 6 more days. I am giving her a lot of beans, rice, crushed egg shells and raw eggs mixed in with her regular food in hopes to help promote the healing of her bones. She goes back on the 20th - he will sedate her and check the leg to see if the splint will need to go back on for a few more weeks.

Our new coop is pretty much finished (just not chicken safe yet), so I have her sleeping in there at night so she can stretch out a lot easier than the crate I had her sleeping in before. During the day, she sticks very close to the house if I don't have her fenced in the coop pen. She has shown a huge fear of cars and even just a vehicle on the dirt road causes her to jump up and move as far as she can from even the sight of the road. She is afraid of the tractor and the 4-wheeler now too. I had her in the fence the other day and a large tractor trailer went down the road - she literally started yelping and jumped up and was going to hurt herself trying to get through the fence so she could get away. I am glad she has this fear and hope she doesn't outgrow it.

Poor little thing. I'm glad it is going well. Sounds like you are doing all you can to promote her healing process. give her a scritch for me.

Awww Sunflowerparrot, she looks so happy! I will have to come see her in the next few days along with your new chicks. I don't think that splint slows her down too much. I wish we could get the sisters side by side.

I was thinking that too... I'm not too sure Jasmine (or Lilly) would be too welcoming of her on their property. And I'm not sure you getting them in your car just to bring them over is something you're jumping up and down for joy over! I will be home all next week.. I am running to Orshlens to get new 5-gallon buckets and some new food and water dishes for the cats and Fern sometime this week...

Went to church this morning and had a great day. Picked my mom up at the airport this morning and she's back for a while now, which is nice. Been soooo busy, I can't even believe it. School has definitely started.

Hearing about your fair trips has been fun. We're going Tuesday, unless I have a sick kid or something similar. DH is taking the day off so we can go together -- yay! Our band girls are playing there Tuesday and then have a cross country meet after in Goddard. We'll have to split up for that one since I'll have kids coming home while the girls are at the meet. I'm really looking forward to seeing all the livestock and the quilts sound interesting too. I've been before and love looking at all the animals but don't always have the time to stop to see the quilts. I think I'll be able to this time. I hope!

Wow... The fair birds sound like Jules Verne breeds I wish we could go. Our buff Orpington is a character. If she were bigger, she might run the house!
Cherwill, I hope your foot is feeling better! Foot pain is no fun, for whatever reason.
Our week has been a bit crazy. Reading all of Karen's kids activities made me feel a bit better though! Karen, you are my hero! I cannot imagine.... 3 in two different schools and my job have be exhausted daily. My oldest has been really sick this week, so add that in and I have no brain left at the end of the day.
We will be getting a few chicks soon for Andy. We can't wait to play with them HEChicken, I know why you endured the little claws
We have still been egg hunting to no avail. Our white rock, Splash silkie and d'uccle are the only ones laying and the white rock skipped 11 days and has now skipped 2 more between eggs. My kids (and I) keep checking for blue and brown eggs... But it seems the more we check, the more those Marans and EE and ameracauna laugh at us!. I snapped this pic of two of them standing at the gate as I left the coop- cackling at me.

Ah well.... They are funny at least!

medawinks, thanks for the compliment but I'm no hero. I'm not even particularly well organized but we manage to get through it all without too many snafus. It is exhausting, for sure. Especially since we didn't even start our family until we were in our 40's, but it's also crazy fun, too! I hope your oldest is getting better. You're my hero, I don't know how anybody does it and works too but most do. There are times when I would really like to but during the winter when one catches something and then the others slowly but surely come down with it, it can be a month before a virus clears the family. I wouldn't make employee of the month that way, would I?

Just got home and got the birds fed and feed shoveled back in the barrells.I still need to water everyone. Some days I swear the day is over before it began.
We had a nice dinner at church today so that took me a little longer than usual, then I spent some time visiting my Dad. Sometimes I do wish my chores were a lot more manageable so I would have time to chill. Either that or have the energy I used to have. I NEVER sat down and relaxed when I still had kids at home.
I still need to transfer some eggs, then I need to go out and see if I can help DH set poles. I really wish he could get them in today. I could hang fence tomorrow. That's a pipe dream though. I also need him to look at my car. Not having air conditioning bites.

Sounds like a pleasant Sunday! Hope the A/C gets fixed. At least it's cooler than it has been, for sure.

Trish, I'm sorry to hear buying in bulk hasn't worked out too well. That's really disappointing and with the drought they've said feed prices are expected to go up. I'm not a bit happy about that.

I've been MIA for a bit while I scrambled to get my craft room finished up. For those of you who saw the craft room when I had my large brooder in it, you wouldn't believe how it looks now! Of course, it's missing any catfish heads in the decor, so that's not good LOL! What IS up with catfish heads on fence posts? Anyway, there are pictures on the walls, DH built more open cabinets and put them up, and all of them are painted. I've run the air purifier a ton as I dusted and cleaned. Our computers are wireless so I'm in the craft room as I type. I have a bit more organizing to do but everything is in it's place pretty much, and all the chick dust is gone, plus I have a TV! My little chicks are just on the other side of my east wall in their condensed version of the original brooder. I haven't put any flooring down and am not certain I'm going to, but we'll see. Still, now for weather extremes I'll have a place I can put birds other than my bedroom and bath. DH is so pleased.

Hawkeye, thanks for the tip about the fair. My kids are going up tomorrow with their band and I'm half thinking I might call and see if there is room on the bus for an extra parent chaperone...

Sunflower, what a great picture of Fern. So glad to hear she is on the mend and afraid of cars. A few months ago one of my dogs jumped out of my car while I was whizzing down the highway at 55mph. She was gone for 3 days and I feared I'd never see her again (I didn't hear her go and although I drove back and forth along the 8-mile stretch of road I knew she had gone out, there was no sign of her). Finally after 3 days someone called (so glad she had on an ID tag with my number) and I was able to collect her, physically unharmed although quite dehydrated. My theory on what happened is she saw something interesting, jumped out the window with no clue what it would do to her at that speed, and was so stunned by the impact that she lay in a ditch until she was recovered enough to seek help. Anyway....since then, she won't even go near the window in the car when we go somewhere. Several friends said they tie their dogs in their car to prevent such a thing but in two decades of taking dogs with me everywhere I go, this was the first time I'd had this issue so it had never occurred to me to do the same. Now I don't need to. When we are in the car, she is in the corner farthest from the window, looking at it like "No sirree, you're not getting ME to go out that window". It has been about 4 months I think since that happened, and she is still fearful of "falling" out of the car window again, so I think they really do learn from these experiences.

Trish, how old did you say the turkey hen is now? Is she about as big as she's going to get, do you suppose? DH has me worried that she won't even fit through my auto door to the coop. I think she will but if she gets very much bigger, it will be tight.

Medawinks, it does seem that the hens who lay the colorful eggs lay less often than those that lay light brown or white eggs. I have 1 marans and 1 EE and they each lay 3-4 eggs a week compared to some of the brown egg layers who will lay 5-6 per week. On the other hand, that means they will lay for longer as they won't burn out as fast.

One of my new chicks (broilers from Hoovers) wasn't growing at all and huddled in a corner. I went to check on it and it was chilled to the touch too... I noticed its eyes weren't even open yet. I took it into my hands and offered water from my palms.. it barely drank - it wouldn't eat either (I'm assuming it hasn't drank or eaten since they arrived Friday at 2 days old). This chick was half the size of the others too. I didn't know what to do but remember hearing how many chicks will suffocate when under a pile of other chicks. I thought the most humane thing to do was take the chick, wrap him in my t-shirt, and hold him in the palms of my hands and let him die. He died within minutes; I cried. I hope I did the right thing for him.

marcaustin, I think the black copper marans roosters are just beautiful, I have one & he is a really pretty boy. I have also seen some really pretty welsummer roosters as well. The black copper marans roosters are big boys, I'm not sure if the welsummers are as big.

HEChicken, I sent you a PM, I don't have the info right now at hand as far as the age on the turkey hen, I will have to try to look that up. If I don't get back to you on that just remind me, I get forgetful. I'm glad your Muscovies are integrating in with the others well.

Sunflowerparrot, I think you did the right thing, sometimes those little guys just don't thrive for some reason or the other. It may have had something wrong with it.
