Oh no, he's not the albino. My turkey is the albino. And she does have red eyes. I think I might have posted a picture of her earlier. She is pretty much blind. The peachick sees perfectly clear.
I'll see if I can get a picture of the turkey again where you can see her eyes.

Here's a picture I just ran out and took of the turkey. If you get the flash directly in her eyes they almost look pinkish white. Click the picture to enlarge and you can see her eyes better

First, Hi everyone and I am doing great! lol I am still under a doc's care and still have things effect me ie the STORMS, love 'em, but HATE the way I feel with the pressure changes!
Verna LOVE the peacock pic! That is tooo cute, I know I have missed much and can't catch up, it said 10,000 posts almost! ARGH! Can't catch up that much!

Anyway, II am trying to play catchup on everything, I am SOOOO behind, I know, everyone is, but I need some help. One thing I see suffering is DH, I get caught up in getting this or that done (ie cleaning the cabinets in the kitchen, hadn't been done in over a year, was going to do, but then ended in the hosp): lots fell behind this summer....

Anyway, I don't think about dinner, and I NEED to; so I thought if someone gave me hints suggestions on a menu for over the next month, I might start getting more inspired and-thinking about dinner if I have something I don't have to think about; pull and get done etc...

you can suggest Mexican, American, Chinese, pot roast, chili....
For example, if you suggest rabbit, say, make it rabbit roast... lol or rabbit enchiladas...he does not like chicken, but we have rabbit, but he doesn't like it allot, he prefers pork, beef then rabbit; but I like rabbit, so once ever week is ok on that.

Some stuff he likes, I have to marinade, he has a teeth sensitivity, and if it's too tough, he won't eat it. SO I try to marinade stuff for a day or so, and if I don't pull anything, I have to just make do with whatever.....
If you can just start giving me ideas and I can start filing in a menu for the next month.

We have dressed out rabbit, pork and beef. in beef, stew, roasts, ground, steak; minute sirloin, rib eyes....in pork, ribs, steaks, ham roasts, roasts roasts roast; and chops! We have about 20-25 rabbits we dressed out left from the 40.

Sides we can figure out as we get the main dishes! :)
So, suggestions? And we can all help each other too. I am just needing to work on this part of my day. I need to THINK about it. So DH gets a GOOD meal! I want to catch up, but try to be organized...Organized..RIIIIGHT!

Help please? :)

Just had a dish at the church yesterday that was surprising. It looked kind of like a chicken and noodle casserole but the taste was a total surprise. You could substitute rabbit for the chicken. Here is what I think it had in it. Chicken, noodles, the kind you buy hard and cook...not the homemade egg noodle type, There was white cheese, I think it might have been jack cheese or maybe even pepper jack. Then I believe there was some rotel or maybe even just chopped green chilies in it. And some maybe cajun seasoning and some grated parmesan on top. It was awesome. I never take seconds at those dinners but I did get more of that.
We eat all kinds of spicy foods so most of my food tends to be a bit that way.
Try making a meatloaf, using lean home grown ground beef, some sugar frosted flakes for the filler, just enough milk to moisten the flakes, onion, egg, and a bottle of barbecue sauce mixed in. Save a little BBQ sauce to pour on top before baking.
I also take something like round steak and brown it, then slow cook it in a mixture of cream of mushroom soup, onion, and green pepper.
Or my version of swiss steak which is round steak or sirloin, browned then topped with tomatoes, tomato sauce, sliced onions, carrots, and celery. Let that simmer slow for a few hours and serve over rice or potatoes.

Lizzy that just sucks! I can't believe someone would expect you to catch her geese unless she gave you fair warning. I'll keep my eyes open for you. I just don't know many people out your direction. Have you ever driven over to swap meet they have in Manhattan at the TSC. I think quite a few people go there. It's a good time of year to pick up a bird since most people downsize in fall.
No, I haven't gone to the swap in Manhattan. Manhattan is roughly 5 hours' drive from me... I was really hoping for something closer. I did find a CL ad for some African Grey geese in Clifton, which isn't far from some of my family, but I wasn't planning on going back that way for another month or so, and I was really hoping to get a goose friend for my goose before then. I guess I did learn a lesson out of this situation though... The seller had Embden, Chinese, Pilgrim, and Toulouse geese. I wanted a chinese but would have settled for a pilgrim as well. I should've told her that. Maybe then she wouldn't have let them all go when she thought she had only males... GRRRR....
Lizzy, that sucks, after you went to all that trouble to make the arrangements to pick them up, too. Sorry I can't help as I have never had geese and know nothing about them. Have you tried the Facebook swap page to see if you can find one that way?

Also, how did your processing day go?
Yes, I have tried the FB swap page, as well as all of the local Buy/Sell/Trade/Marketplace pages I know of.

Processing day was rough, but not as bad as I expected. My friend processed my ducks for me (I couldn't bring myself to help and instead just stood by and cried) and then I helped her process a couple chickens. She sent the chicken I processed home with me (she's a VERY sweet lady). I came home both physically and emotionally exhausted, and I still feel guilty about having to process my birds. However, I've got 5 new Khaki Campbells now, which helps a little. I even found an egg in the pool when I cleaned it out today! The new birds are still scared to death and extremely skittish, but I'm hoping they get over it after they've been here a while.

Oh yes! Sorry I got confused about them.

The first time is the worst. Have you cooked the duck yet? I have a couple of muscovies from when the fox attacked. I didn't want them to go to waste so processed them immediately after, but haven't cooked them up yet.

I finally gave in and took Butch (the roo) to the vet for his bumblefoot today. To my surprise, my vet said it wasn't really very far advanced. He cleaned it out and packed it and wrapped it. He also gave us antibiotics (oral) for several days. Butch was VERY good at the vet's. I guess I can do the clean out next time, and my vet says he will give me the antibiotics if I need them.

On Thursday I'm supposed to remove the wrappings and check out the wound for healing. We shall see.

I swore I wouldn't take a chicken to the vet, but Butch is special.

Okay, genetics gurus, I have a couple of questions. First is about the blue (green) egg gene. Is that gene dominant or recessive? I.e. will an EE rooster over brown or white egg laying hens produce chicks that lay green eggs, white/brown eggs, or a mix of the two? Or, put another way, what is the likelihood of a particular chick from that combination laying green eggs?

And on yellow legs, is that a recessive trait? I hadn't really stopped to think about it until I read more about the Aloha project and went out to look at my flock and realized I have practically NO yellow legs. I have one hen who has kind of pinkish/yellow legs. They are not as bright yellow as some I've seen, but not pink like BO's pink either. Interestingly, of the 9 chicks I hatched, I have one chick that has quite yellow legs. I figure the mother of that one HAS to be the hen with the pale yellow legs, although the chick's legs are much more yellow than that hen. So it got me to thinking about how yellow legs come about too.

There is nothing at stake on the answers to either of these questions, except to satisfy my curiosity.
My experience with the blue egg thing - I bought a "backyard flock" from someone that was moving. It consisted of some black tailed white japanese, hens and 1 roo, 1 EE banty roo, 1 banty cochin roo, and some seabright hens. Because, because, they ended up in the same pen and the cochin roo did not survive. After some eggs hatched and the chicks grew and the pullets started laying, I was very surprised to find some nice "blue" eggs. Not green, blue. The EE roo was the only chicken in the pen that even could have carried the blue gene, so from that, I found out that all you need for blue eggs is a roo that carries the blue gene. I have been enchanted with the little hens that look like the japanese and lay the pretty blue eggs. Some layed slighty off white eggs which is the natural color for the japanese and some layed a slightly brown egg. That might be the natural color for the seabrights. There are a few blue egg layers in the following generations, but with it is a "fiesty" disposition from that EE roo that is not so good. It has been interesting.

I am not sure, but isn't the green egg color from a combination of the blue and brown gene? I have not studyied it so am not sure on that. I have thought if someone wanted to put the time into it, some interesting blue egg chickens could be developed just with a good blue egg gene rooster.
