Consolidated Kansas

Could he have an ear infection? They always make my balance off.
DS suggested that too - it is certainly something else to check out.

Well the bottom of the tub is only 5 sq ft,, I am worried this is too small for 10 chicks...
At least in the beginning that will be plenty of room for them. As they grow, you might need to look at options to give them a little more space.

tnt~~~ sounds like ear mites to me. They get way down in the ear and feed, breed, multiply like crazy!! if you rub the ear gently at the base of the ear directly under the ear, if he leans his head towards you like"OH MY THAT FEELS SO GOOD". When you stop usually they will shake their head like crazy. You will know it is mites. Oh, and the mud you see, that is the mite feces that comes back out of the ear.

Ear mites are so horrible!!!
Oh - thanks for another tip of things to look for!

well i just got home and checked the incubator, and saw that the welsummer chick has made a small pip (about a cm small) in the middle of the egg! i thot that they were supposed to pip towards the top, not in the middle, so that kinda worries me... but at least i know it developed! i havent seen any visible movement from it or any other eggs so i am very stressed out right now! i just hope they get on the ball and all start pippin up the party* hehe. but yah, i can't take this much longer... I really hope this turns out because i don't know if i could handle my emotions if just one hatched and was all by itself :(

So if this one JUST pipped this late in day 21, how long do you think before it starts to zip? Oh, I hope this goes well...

The humidity is down to 56, but theres not much i can do with out opening the bator :(...

Somebody PLEASE tie me to a chair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
It can take 24 hours from pip to zip - at this point it may still be absorbing the last of the yolk so will rest and breathe air until it is time. Is there a way you can use a straw to go in through the vent holes to add some humidity?

If it weren't for the wounds on your cat, I would suspect a stroke. I've had two dogs who had strokes and much of the behavior you described is very similar to how the dogs were in the week or two after the strokes. I hope he's doing better.
The funny thing is, I woke up this morning wondering if cats have strokes and then decided a brain tumor is also a possibility. He's been acting "off" lately with a very changed personality. Last night and this morning he was acting more like his old personality but now its the body that is off. Those things seem to fit with tumor. Josie44 also suggested a partial thrombo-something that sounds like it fits. I plan to get him to the vet in the morning.

HEchicken--thankx I have it all set up. I used some nonslip shelving mat on the bottom for grip and pine shaving and then covered it in screen like you use on your window so they wont eat the pine, feed dish, water dish and heat is checked all I need is chicks,,, come on thursday...

Hawkeye - Thanks for the heads up on Revolutionmama's chickens! I picked up a couple Black Java pullets this afternoon. Beautiful birds. Josie also had a few birds that I'm looking for, so i'm going to really diversify my flock! I'm excited about the birds all over again!

Hope this finds everyone well!

now the australorp has pipped! exciting stuff! hope that the 2 marans chicks will pip by the time i check next in the morning!

Treating earmites is one of the simplest things on earth to do. Instead of messing with expensive med, simply drop a few drops of olive oil in the cats ears. They will rub and clean them with their paws and the olive oil suffocates the mites. Your cats end up with clean healthy ears. I used to drop oil in my cats ears and then use q tips to clean them. They actually loved having ttheir ears cleaned. But even if your cat doesn't think that's a good idea the oil and the cat do a great job! No dirty or infected ears for my kitties! It would be nice if that is the only problem with the cat.

Silly chick! Tried hopping out if it's box! A good sign I think! It still can't keep it's balance, but can stand briefly :)
Progress! Yay! Maybe the vitamin E is starting to work. That is awesome!

My old cat I lost about 16 years ago had bran tumor. He acted very strange for about 6 months. We had never had a catbox and this cat would hold it for a full 24 hours to do outside, But the last 6 months or so he had to have a cat box. He had always been very behaved but had started doing things out of character. He became violently sick one day and puked hard that he displace his corneas which made him blind. It was a terrrible demise but a brain tumor is what they found post-mortem.

Congrats! Congrats! I am thinking because you are using still air there were some cool spots in the incubator that will slow down hatching. I had some eggs hatch as much as 5 days late when I first used a styro incubator. Keep the faith.

Hechicken, Sunflower, R, and David, so great to meet you today!

It was so nice so see everyone today that came & to meet you WichitaKidd. I truly hope you will try chickens again in the spring, you have that beautiful coop you built for them, so you just need some new chicks now.

I got the little guineas home Danz & put them in the brooder with the other two small ones & they just act like they have known each other forever. Guineas are like that, so now this will be the 3rd group. It's weird because these two I had I bought at Atwood's the same day & the little pied one was half the size of the pearl & all the ones I got from you today are the same size as that one, but the pearl now is like twice the size of the rest, I can't believe how fast that one has grown. I have all of the others out in the hoop coop with the peacocks for now & they're all doing great in there. Do you put tarps all around your peacock pens or how do you protect them for the winter? I have a huge tarp over the top all the full length of the coop, but am now wondering if I should put plastic over the back & down the sides more. What do you think? There is about 3 to 4 feet of area from the tarp down to the ground that is just hardware cloth & isn't covered right now.

I got home this afternoon & sat down for awhile & then went out to do chores & on my rounds found the speckled sussex hen that was acting off last night laying dead on the side of the hill. She only just came in last night acting like she didn't feel well, I had not noticed anything prior to that. She didn't have any signs of respiratory distress, coughing, sneezing, discharge of any kind. I didn't see any wounds on her when I picked her up, just nothing, she just keeled over & died. This was one of my pullets that I got at the end of April, so she was just 5 months old. The others from that group look fine, I looked them over tonight & they were all looking healthy. I just don't know what happened to her. That is the 2nd speckled sussex I have lost this year. I really like them a lot, but they do seem more fragile than other birds.

I finally decided tonight to move two of my young welsummer pullets & what I believe to be a lavender Orpington rooster to the main coop. I moved them after all the other birds were in roosting tonight, so they will wake up together tomorrow. This young rooster just has huge feet, some of the biggest rooster feet I have ever seen I think, so if he grows into his feet he's going to be a monster. I'm trying to uncrowd my grow-out pen some by moving some birds out. I wish I knew what sex all of the Ameraucanas were in there so I would know what I need to do with them, but I'm unsure about two of them still. I think I have two lavender Orp/porcelain isabel pullets & two roosters, that's what they appear to be anyway, so I will have two roosters to re-home in those. I'm trying to get birds distributed to the correct areas before winter. Now if we can only get the breeder coop done, that would be great so I can move birds in there. I got word this afternoon that my roofing I ordered for it is supposed to be in at Lowe's this Friday, so I'm excited about that.

wow! They can hatch 5 days late! That reassures me about the marans now! The BLRW has made a bigg pip and i can see its beak moving, the australorp has made some progress but i haven't it pip thru the white skin of the egg yet... the welsummer hasn't moved since last night, but i'm guessing that it's resting/absorbing yoke/saving up energy... no signs from either of the marans eggs... but like you said they might hatch late... who knows, i just gotta be patient! It looks as tho the BLRW is about to zip so the suspense is going to KILL me in school today, wanting to know whats going on! I'm gonna miss all the action!

Its so cute, whenever i go down to check on 'em (every 2 minutes) I cheep right into one of the holes in the lid so they can here me! and it never fails, every time i cheep, the BLRW chick started rocking his egg back an forth! I felt like her little cheep* leader! hehe... it was SO amazing... my mom started crying... Happy times right now! BIG smiley face!
