Consolidated Kansas

Oh, what a fun costume! I hope my kiddos want to be cool things for halloween! I would have a field day with a peacock costume. I think my favorite costume as a kid was the year I was a monarch butterfly and I work a black jumpsuit and my mom made me antennae and full cardboard wings with black and orange felt glued on in the wing patterns. It was an awesome costume.
I made on of my sons a butterfly costume. He was like 3 and he was obsessed with butterflies. I actually made him a pair of leggings and a shirt that had fingers out of stretchy black material. I made him a head cover and attached a couple of antennas I redesigned from some space antennas. I found some heavy stiff black mesh material at Hancock Fabrics. It was heavy enough it stood up on it's own. I'm sure it was backing for something but not sure what. Then I sewed on rows of sequins around the outside. I used fabric paint and painted the spots on the wings. He looked absolutely awesome. That was back when digital cameras weren't an option. I was moving and put the undeveloped roll of film in a trash bag with other household items and something leaked and ruined it. It broke my heart!!
Lady, you are crazy, where are you keeping the pig? I really wanted to raise a pig this year but we didn't get organized. Fresh pork and bacon is soooo much better than store bought. No worries, I am getting my rest. I fell asleep on the bed this afternoon while folding socks. DH was kind enough to come up and take a picture of me sleeping with 6 cats on the bed!
Too cute!

Right now I have the pig in the kennel where I had the midget whites before I moved them. That isn't a permanent place but it worked for now. I do need those panels to make a catch pen for some roosters though.
I raised hogs in the 70's and we just used an electric wire. In fact we shut it off after having it on a day or two and they never bothered it. I have a spare charger but can't afford to buy another set of ground rods. I need one of those old positive/negative chargers. I liked them better cause they didn't take all that extra stuff. I also had a pet pig I just let roam the yard. She slept on the front steps and walked with me while I did chores. She would run ahead and lay down in the path in front of me to get her tummy scratched. I know this little guy was probably freaked out yesterday but he sure seemed wild. I hope he calms a little or I might butcher him a bit too early!!! I doubt he will stay in the pen very long so I am going to have to get the hog rings out and fix his nose soon. I luckily have hog rings because I use them for doing some upholstery work. I'm not sure where he will go long term. I never plan these things. I had no idea there would be a pig at an exotic sale that wasn't a pygmy or a heritage breed.

Trish- Hope you feel better. I hate being sick and it is so hard to care for the birds when you feel awful and its rainy and cold out!

Well, Miss Lucie is hanging in there. I can't say that I enjoy getting up at 3 AM for her pain meds but other than that she is being a pretty good patient. She must be starting to get itchy because she won't stop licking at the road rash she has and I can't keep an ecollar on her because she keeps getting it off when she is in the crate. So she is wearing a men's thermal shirt and a harness plus her hind end support harness to help her maintain her balance. Phew!
Aw she looks so miserable. I like the idea of the underwear! I will have to remember that.

So i need some advice, out of the 3 choices i have, which one to choose: 1: put her in the tractor with the others (where she can get pecked) BTW, will the other hens peck her to the extent of killing her??? 2: Leave her out to free range with the risk of being killed by a hawk(like the other two hens, recently) or 3: leave her in the coop all alone, all day, all unhealthy like??? Please post your opinions because i'm really in a pickle!
Glad you got the tractor done. If it were me I would let her free range. I would put her out near the tractor so she can be near the other birds. I see it this way. Either the other birds continue to pick on her until they kill her or a hawk could get her. I think her chances are better with the hawk. If she is near the other birds she won't feel that lonely and they might get used to her not being accessible to their picking and start leaving her alone.

We had a storm last night, we're thankful for the rain, we've been in drought for two years. I tried to put the turkeys in the barn before sun set, I gave up, goofy turkeys! They looked tattered after the storm, we got 2.50 inches of hard rain and some hail. One of my young turkeys was no where to be found this morning.

Blessed rain. We didn't get any where near that much but we got quite a bit.
WARNIING: Don't read the rest of this post if you have a weak stomach...it's a gross....
I didn't get to do what I had planned today because my DH decided today was a good day to boil the stuff out of an elk skull, he got it started and then had some projects he needed to go do, I agreed to help with this elk skull boil, that ended up being a gross job, putrid stench doesn't even begin to describe it, when the water heated up and the maggots started crawling out and floating to the top I realized this was going to be grosser and take longer than I had expected. Rubber gloves, a knife scrapping slime tissue.....disgusting! After several hours the wind got up, I decided it was not be safe, I shut off the propane burner put the elk rack up where the coyotes couldn't drag it off and I showered, I also decided that was my last skull boiling, I will say NO next time.

I don't know which was worse, the smell of an egg in my incubator that exploded on me or that elk skull......At least the elk skull is outside, the egg was in my house.
OH that is just so gross. Need to keep the nose open for smells from the incubator. I've never had one break in mine but I've sure had some that got rank. I very carefully remove them and throw them as far as I can outside.

Danz, congrats on getting the feeder pig, I raised hogs one year, 3 of them when I lived in Derby. We got one for us, one for my late husband's parents, & one for his aunt. I just had them in a pen by the barn & they never did try to get out of there. They were pretty entertaining to have around until time to take them to butcher. That was the best pork I ever had too. It's too bad the little thing is so mean. I think all the ones I had were females, I'm pretty sure they were & they were really nice & each had a personality. I had told my son who was young at the time not to name them, but being a kid he did anyway.
I purposely bought a male hog because I didn't want to be tempted to keep it. It will remind me that it is for food.
Karen I am so glad you had a good time with relatives. I would love to have a space like your craft room. Of course mine would be full of chickens or something! But better than having them in the house. Speaking of that I have a whole new group I need to get moved to the brooder.
I am feeling overwhelmed right now. I have to get around for church. Then when I get home I have a guy coming over for poop and some chickens. Then someone later for chickens. I have to get a new cage made for the chipmonks. Get another area ready in the brooder for chicks, replace the bedding in the chicken houses he shovels out, figure out where to house the pig. Then take some of those panels, and set them up to corner some wild roosters. I haven't touched my house in days and the chick dust is an inch thick every where. The floors are filthy and things are piled.
I have two pens and houses I have to get divided to make room for separating breeds and colors. I need to take a rooster on a road trip to his new home.
I do fine just being busy but then once in a while I just feel totally overwhelmed. I am at that spot right now. On top of that I still have all my normal feeding and watering which takes a minimum of a couple hours by itself.

ChicknBaron, that's great news that you got the tractor done. I can't wait to see pics. I had one little chicken that was so scared of being with the bigger chickens he kept getting stuck in corners, I put him with the younger chickens and he did fine. We did determine that the others were picking on him and chasing him into the corners. I wouldn't just let her get picked on if it's that bad. Looks like you already got some great ideas about that.

Speaking of them pecking, my chicks are pecking at each other. One pecked another's foot and wouldn't let go. They're a rowdy bunch. They're already jumping on top of the waterer, they don't even have feathers. I'm going to put them in something taller, I may just wake to chicks all over the place.
Lol my little ones will be 2 wks on tuesday and have gotten out a few times now so sides had to be put up, they are little firecrackers even the little 1/2 blind one

Danz- I have to say your setup is amazing I wish mine looked that good.

But it is inspiration for next years coop building project

They leave the rack attached to the skull, they boil and then use hair bleach to clean up the skull. They call it European Mount. I could care less about the antlers, I'm thankful for the meat to fill the freezer. It's flavor is much better than deer. It's hormone free and grain fed. The elk here destroy corn fields, milo, wheat, alfalfa... These elk were brought in to live on the Cimmaron National Grasslands but decided they'd rather eat and destroy the grain crops. We also have wild pigs here that are doing alot of damage.

I'm a newbie with turkeys, are all turkeys stupid? Mine seem to be.

I'm a newbie to turkeys too but although I hear this a lot, mine don't seem any stupider than the rest of the birds. They all kind of hang out together, and the turkeys come running along with the chickens when I go to visit. If I throw out treats, they are in there trying to grab a choice bit to run off with, just like the others too.

What are yours doing that led to the comment?

Everyone says turkeys are stupid and although yes they are not the brightest I dont find them stupid, they actually learn faster than chickens and remember more. They are slow learners yes and learn differently but I dont find them stupid at all, They are goofy and like to do their own thing, they have survived to this point in life so there has to be some kind of intellegence there. And before it happens,, yes i know wild turkeys are smarter and the domestic turkey has lost all those means to survive because they are not fighting for their lives,, I love me turkeys even if they are alittle slow lol. I find they work best when a routine is put into play and carried out everyday. I had a prob with them roosting on the roof of my house for awhile until I worked out the routine we do every evening and now they go were they should.

I don't think turkeys are stupid, actually they seem smarter than guineas in that at least they can get back into their pen if they come out. Mine get riled up when the guineas start making a bunch of noise, they start gobbling because the goofy guineas are sounding the alarm. But the guineas sound the alarm for whatever reason all the time, so you never know if they're just excited about something or what. They carry on when it's time to go to roost at night or when they get let out of the pen. I really enjoy my turkeys, I think they're very entertaining & social birds. My tom turkey likes to show off for me or other people who come over to visit, he's quite the clown!

Well I got up this morning thinking I was going to go to the swap in Arkansas City, but it took me awhile to get all the birds watered & fed, they all needed fresh water today. By the time I got all of that done & ate breakfast it was kind of late to get around & go. Sunflowerparrot called me after going down there & said there were only about 6 vendors there anyway & it wasn't too exciting, so I guess I didn't miss anything. I really didn't need to be going anyway, I'm still coughing & have a runny nose, so I just need to keep resting & beat this thing. I have a hair appt. tomorrow in Wichita, so I need to feel better. I'm a little bit better today than yesterday, but still not feeling wonderful yet. I'm going to take it pretty easy today & not overdo so I can feel up to going out tomorrow. I need to get some groceries tomorrow too, I just haven't felt like even working on my list this weekend, but I've got to get it done today. My DH did go to Sam's yesterday & got some things & he's going to BBQ chicken this evening for supper, so that will get me out of cooking today. I'm all for him doing the cooking on the BBQ or smoker on the weekends since I cook most every other day, it gives me a break.

Okay and here are a few more. Some of my midget white turkeys. I love these guys!

This is the outside of my brooder house. Nothing fancy.
o

These are my blue slate turkeys. The Tom always displays for me.

This is my newest building and the peafowl pens. It looked much better before I put the metal on the bottom. But when the peachicks hatched I needed it to keep them in.
Wow i love your pins they are awesome. are the brooders easy to clean i would only need a small one. i don't plan on having a lot of chicks but would like to hatch one day just so that we can experience it

Maybe mine are young and will get smart with time. I like them, they are funny, and I enjoy listening to all of their communication sounds. They hatched the 3rd week of July and thankfully the chicken we hatched with them helped them find food and water. Mine fly out of the corrals and then run around trying to bull doz their way back in to the pen. They know how to fly out, but then don't know how to get back in and go in panic mode. I have the same routine every day, the chickens know what barn door I'm going to open to get the feed, they know when I get the water bucket I'm going to fill it and bring it back in the pen. These turkeys remind me of that movie 50 first dates, it's like every day everything is new to them, maybe it's because they are young. They are bigger than my chickens so maybe I just expect them to be more mature than they are.

Kansas Prairie, my Royal Palm turkeys are 5 & 6 months old, so they're about full sized now & the male displays & has been gobbling for quite a long time. I had two toms originally in the bunch I had shipped to me, but this summer I lost the dominant tom & a hen to the heat, it was a brutal summer on the birds. The 2nd tom just seemed to be lost for awhile after the other one died, but after awhile he perked up & has taken over the other one's spot. I think he has even done better after HEChicken came & got her hen so now the tom just has his two hens. I also enjoy all the sounds the turkeys make, they're really fun to just stand & watch. When I know I'm going to be outside for awhile I do let mine out for some free-ranging, but they never seem to go very far from their pen. They do fly if they get spooked by something, but not very far. I'll bet yours will learn to get back into their pen as they get older. I only started recently letting mine out when I let the guineas out for their exercise because the guineas will start yelling & then get the turkeys excited too.

My DH got back from his marathon about an hour or so ago & said he ran slower than usual today. He just hasn't been running long distances lately & if you don't train for those things you just don't do well. I don't really think he was that worried about it, he didn't seem like he was. He went with two other guys that he knows that live around this area, one is a Chriropractor here in town & he never runs more than the half-marathons. Hawkeye, how did your DH do with his marathon today? Did he qualify for Boston? My DH never has quite qualified for that, he's always been just a tad too slow, but then he started doing these marathons at a lot older age than your DH & he's a lot older now too. I think it's worth a mention if you can even finish running 26.2 miles, let alone running it fast enough to qualify for Boston.

Been busy and haven't had time to read posts yet. I am really upset. One of my very expensive Orlansk Dwarf pullets is really sick. She is breathing very hard, won't eat or drink, and has a eye swollen shut. I am so confused. These birds are in my basement. I have kept them away from all the others because I was so paranoid about them getting sick. Now I am really worried I willl lose them all. I'm not sure how to treat this either. I gave her a tylan shot but I'm afraid it might be too late. I don't know what to give the other birds as a preventative. I just put some probiotics in their water. I am so careful with these birds. I always wash my hands before I go down to care for them. How could she have managed to catch any kind of illness down there?.
