Consolidated Kansas

I've been out digging and stuff in the garden. Trying to get what I can out of it for now. When the pumpkin vines freeze for the final time I'll till it up. Anyway I finished digging my sweet potatoes and just had to share this! This sucker was over 15 inches long, 18 inches around and weighed 6.8 pounds. If you look carefully you can see the weight on the scale.I'd nver seen one even close to this size before. I made my own Sweet potato starts from some eating potatoes I got at the grocery store. I only had like 3 potatoes I cut up. I got a nice bounty of them. What would I have gotten if I watered them?

You're welcome Kansas Prairie, now that I think about it I've never seen anyone be cranky with each other on this thread and I'm thankful for that too. I don't like it when people get that way, we're all friends and it hurts when friends don't get along even when you're not one of the ones in the middle of it. I'm only on this thread on BYC, so I can't speak for other threads.

Maidenwolf, I'm so sorry you are dealing with illness too.

HEChicken, my dad can come anytime to come check it out but he's instructing us and I don't think the problem is obvious yet. There were a couple of outlets that had mysteriously quit working and now they're all of a sudden working again. Something strange is going on, I double checked all smoke detectors because it scares me. OMGOSH!!! Your little rooster crowing is SOOOO FUNNY!!! What's up with that? He's taking his job seriously already.

That's funny, Danz. I think you're right about the DH thing, but I can still growl a little. GRRRR. I so don't want to put in the new furnace. I wanted to wait until something big broke and it really needed to be replaced. This seems like such a little break, it's only a matter of fixing this tiny little piece of plastic and getting a good seal and it seems so wasteful to just switch them out for something so small. We have the fireplace in the living room and I have 2 space heaters, the kitchen only gets cold at night so as long as it doesn't get too cold I still have a little time. I'm just glad it's not 20 below.

I wasn't following this part too well, I didn't know about springs and push in holes. We just went around checking to see that all of the outlets are 120. I will definitely take a few of the outlets that have been misbehaving apart and check them out.
One more question. I have no idea what age or what kind of home you have. Do you have aluminum wiring? It is notorious for stretching and getting loose causing shorts. That is why they quit making it. Also when you are investigating make sure all the screws are down tight where the wires are attached. You obviously have a major short in your wiring and that is dangerous. These things can loosen up over time regardless so it doesn't hurt to check them any way. If I were closer I'd run over and trouble shoot for you. But I am sure you'd much rather see your Dad. Just remember to tell him I said hi!
Note to others. It's such a small world. I know Mammahen's dad and have known him for about 27 years. He is an awesome guy!!!
Oh Lizzy! Those are amazing pics!!!!!
I agree!

OMGOSH Hawkeye!!!! That's so scary, I'm so glad you will be okay and your kids were unharmed. I can't even imagine. I'm sure the sherriff could tell the driver wasn't telling the truth. What on earth was he thinking? Isn't it amazing what you can do when you just have to? Take it easy and get well soon.

I have 7 chicks hatched so far, I only helped the first one that had the taped shell. There are a few more in there already in pipped/zipping still. There are many eggs in there doing nothing though. It's kinda funny, but I put a thermometer in the brooder because I wanted to keep it extra warm for the one I removed from the incubator to help. I had the thermometer standing up against the side just leaning a bit. It's had been running in the low 90s and I was okay with that. Well, the chick knocked it down and would you believe that laying against the bottom of the brooder/tub it's exactly 99.5 degrees? I try to hard to keep the incubator at that perfect temp and here this is 99.5 by chance.
Congrats on the chicks! Sounds like you did great afterall!
I need to get busy, I'm supposed to be typing my dh's papers and they're sooooooo boring I can't hardly make myself do it. Wish me luck.

I am exhausted after all the garden work. I still have loads to hall in and clean up. The chickens are very very happy right now because they have a huge pile of pepper plants I pulled up with lots of leftover peppers on them.
I have a pile of watermelon too. The tomatoes put on some more green ones and I actually found one ripe on. I had picked most of the green ones off before that last freeze.

Oh my, Hawkeye, just made me sick to think of your car accident. I'm so glad you buckle those little ones up -- I've always done that and live in fear of having an accident with all the kids in the car. Thank the Good Lord that's never happened. You were just brilliant! Mom's can be the most amazing creatures on the planet.

Quickly, I'll say that Tookie is still alive but I believe it's only because of the cayenne pepper/antibiotic combination. She is in the craft room in a big dog kennel with a heat lamp. The kids saw her up and drinking on her own once this afternoon. I wished I had seen her up on her feet but I missed it. She is a very sick girl. I've been all over the planet trying to buy some Fish Zole before one kind soul told me they aren't allowed to sell it anymore. Cripes. You can still get it online but I should have had it on hand prior to needing it and I wouldn't be in this horrible fix with poor Tookie. She really is just the biggest love. Anyway, the brand name is Flagyll and my last hope is to check with our veterinarian tomorrow and see if he will prescribe some for Tookie. I don't know that she will make it on just the cayenne pepper alone but we're doing our best. The kids have been so sweet with Tookie, I'm really proud of them.

So much happening today!

Hope everyone's sick birds get well and we can all breathe a little easier.

Danz, way to go on the sweet potatoes! I must try some of those next year. My regular potatoes did really well, considering how hot and dry it was but we had to water like crazy. Since they were in the orchard, that was okay since the orchard had to be watered anyway.

Congrats, JosieChick, on the great baby furniture finds!

Lizzy great pics you should charge people.

Maybe I will hire you someday

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! That is such a nice compliment! I don't have any of the fancy equipment that most photographers have and don't know that I would feel right charging people because my pictures don't always come out well (my cousin's wedding, for instance - she was supposed to have an outdoor wedding but they got a BIG rainstorm the night before and ended up having to move it inside. It was rather dark in the building they moved it to and most of my pictures came out blurry, probably due to the lack of a nice flash). Having said that, I do enjoy taking pictures and would be more than happy to take pictures for you, maybe in exchange for some bird-talk over a meal???

Thank you again, I truly appreciate your kind words about my "photography".

I love photos, I think they capture so much and because of a tragic childhood my memory is not so good, so photos are important to me. I take tons of pics of my kids and my animals (chickens on a daily basis lol) I treasure nice pics that I could frame and sadly enough for a person who loves pics I only have teh camera on my phone. I really want a good one. I think I would be honored to have you take photos for me for that exchange. PM me sometime, where are you in KS?

lizzy, forgot to say how impressed I am with your photography. Very, very nice.

Thank you!

PM sent. I am in Northwest KS, in the Goodland/Colby area.

Danz, I can't believe how long you've known my dad. Isn't it crazy. I can't wait to talk to him, like really talk to him. We will be there on Halloween. But like you said about it being a small world, I want to be careful what I say too. Like about one of my sale experiences, I felt like I couldn't say anything because you don't know who's out there. But in this case, it's AWESOME!!! It's actually quite amazing. Our house is 12 years old, it's a manufactured home (glorified double wide). I'm trying to wait until tomorrow to look closer at the wiring, my dh gets a bit freaked when I start tearing into things. :) That's one heck of a sweet potato, ours got huge this year too. I have a pic on my cell phone I will try to transfer it to my computer somehow. We have so many I don't feel bad at all to share with my chicks.

So far I'm up to 10(almost 11) chicks but there are probably over 20 eggs in there still. It's still not a very good hatch rate. In a little while I'm going to take out chicks and look for any signs of the others hatching. What's the likelihood of more hatching tomorrow? I put them all in at once. Unless the ones that weren't cooled before putting in the incubator got a head start on developing. The humidity in the house is at 60%, I'm actually concerned that maybe it's too high in the incubator.

One pen in the brooder room is ready to go. He used old refrigerator racks as doors and some plastic clamps that go around and screw into the wood on the bottom, then just a screw to hold it at the top. The plastic clamp has just enough give to let me lift it up and over the screw but it's a tight fit, I can pull it hard straight towards me and it doesn't budge. Next thing is adjusting the light, we have the brooder light on one end of this pen shining at a angle across the pen. I felt the floor all over there is one place it's a little more than warm but not hot, I felt the sides and the back and it feels warm. I could cover the doors if needed to prevent drafts in the really cold weather but I don't think that is necessary yet. We tried several angles with the light, if it's facing downward it gets too hot and only in one place. If this angle didn't work we were going to try a smaller bulb but I think it's fine like it is. I'm excited to try it out, but I will keep them in where we can have some fun with them for a while longer.
